I did a search for embossing mats in this forum and couldn't get the answer I was looking for, so I'm posting my question.
I need 2 Spellbinders tan embossing mats so that I can emboss with SB dies in my Cuttlebug. I found them at Spellbinders, but they want $72.00 to ship them to Canada. That is not a typo. I called them to confirm.
Do the 2 Cuttlebug embossing mats work the same as the Spellbinder mats for embossing with Spellbinders diecuts in the cuttlebug?
Or is there anything else that works?
TIA
Jo

...sure its got a catchy beat, but can you stamp to it?
life is something that happens only when you run out of cardstock
As a long time Cuttlebug user who recently converted to the Big Shot, I can tell you that every/any embossing pad that fits through the throat of the Bug (or BS) will work for embossing.
When I used my Cuttlebug, the first mats I got were Spellbinder, then I got some mats that were "compatible" with Cuttlebug (2 thicknesses), and then I finally got an official Cuttlebug embossing mat. Every one of these mats worked. Because each Bug is different in tightness (and tend to loosen over much use), it is difficult to say which pad will give the right "Mama Bear" level of embossing that you desire. That being said, I never had any problem finding the right combo when I had this odd-ball selection of embossing pads to choose from....keep in mind that the sandwich thickness can change with something as subtle as a using a thicker or thinner card stock. That's why it was handy to have a selection to choose from.
So my advice would be to use any combination of any brand of embossing mat to get the look you want. I never resorted to the rubber gasket stuff from Home Depot because I didn't want to take a chance of any "stuff" on the gasket transferring to my cardstock. I stuck with mats intended for embossing in a die cut machine because they were clean to start with and were lighter in color so they were easy to spot in my table debris.
Hope this takes some of the anxiety out of your choice of mats and that you are able to find something that is reasonably priced. Good luck in your hunt!
Just a reassuring note in case you resort to the plumber's gasket: it's just a sheet of plain red rubber - nothing that will transfer to any of your treasured dies or papers or whatever. The biggest thing I noticed with using the gasket vs the embossing mats is that they tended to collect the debris from the cuts a bit easier than the mats - probably because they are rubber instead of silicone. A quick rinse under running water took care of that, though...
Another thought here- as you need two embossing mats, have you tried a cheap thin mouse mat? That might do the trick. Another option, seeing Sue mention silicone- have a look in your dollar stores baking section for silicone baking mats. I have bought them from our Pound stores, and I reckon they would do the job.
I have been using Sizzix silicone embossing pad for years . It works and feels the same as the Spellbinder one . I have a Spellbinder silicone pad too
They have the Sizzix ones at Amazon Canada for $8.31 , I also use the Sizzix impression pad with the silicone pad for embossing and I never need shims . Amazon Canada also sell that , It is listed under the info for the silicone pad --Hope this helps

I also use the plumbers gasket. Had no problems with it and the spellbinder dies don't cut into it either like some of the thinner mats. Highly recommend it.
