I've been thinking of buying one . If you have one..is it worth the money? And which one should I buy? I want it to sit on my craft table. I have great natural light during the day but at night the lighting is horrible in my craft room.
I have the Ott True Color Task Lamp - it's small and sits on my crafting table. The tube part swings up when you want the light on and then you fold it back in to turn it off.
Here's a link to one on Amazon so you can see what I mean.
I'm very happy with mine but the replacement tubes are pricey. The Daylight company also make something similar and it looks like the replacement tubes are cheaper than Ott Lite ones - so I'd check that out before making a decision.
I love my natural light lamp. i got a tensor floor lamp from Lowe's when they were on sale and what a HUGE difference it makes, I have recessed florescent lighting in my stamp area, so needed a nice light there. Works super for me, I turn it on when I am stamping, off when I am done. I also bought a natural daylight bulb for one of my other lamps that is a clip on kind for using on my cutting/scoring table, works super, I just turn it on when I am cutting and scoring, off when I am done!

yes, btw, bulbs were expensive for my floor light, I think I paid $23 for another bulb, but they say the bulbs last up to 5 years. I just like to keep an extra around for when I need it!

Ott is just a brand name. I have an Ott floor model with a magnifier attachment, but also bought some 'daylight' bulbs by Philips to use in two of my other lights, and found the light they give off is just as good as the Ott for a lot less money.

Does the bulb come with it? I saw where it said the bulbs last for 10,000 hours!!!! Find that hard to believe! I see that Michaels carries them...could I use my 50 % off????

Also...I saw where you can buy a magnifier for it...what does that do?

This is exactly what I use -- the Phillips daylight bulbs. I bought a floor lamp that has the adjustable arm at a thrift store for about $4. I think the bulb was maybe $4. (Less than $10 anyhow.)

Yes, the tube is already in the lamp when you buy it.
Sorry, no idea about the Michaels 50% off coupon - I'm in the UK and we don't have Michaels here - and we never get any 50% off coupons for that matter either! :( I'm sure someone will know and advise you on that one though!

I don't have a magnifier on mine - I would imagine it's a round magnifying glass that can attach to a lamp, maybe that clips on? Do you do any other crafts that you may need a magnifier for? Can't say as I would buy one myself but it depends on your prsonal requirements.
I have had my Ott Lamp for about 18 months and recently had to change the tube. I must admit to having NO clue as to how many hours the tube lasted! I don't use it every day and hardly at all in the summer months.

Ruth, that's REALLY strange! I would have to wonder about the outlet it's plugged in to. I know in my area there's actually too MUCH power coming through the outlets, and also there are power surges from time to time. Those can drastically shorten the life of appliances. Other than something like that, the Ott bulb should last for way, way, WAY longer than 18 months!
I have a daylight lamp from Office Depot and love it! They carry the bulbs too and I don't think they are very expensive, but neither my lamp or the bulbs they carry are OTT brand.

SO...the bulb really does lasts for a long time? I'd have to question 10,000 hours !!! If so..its worth the price for the bulb...
Hi Betsy - many thanks for that info. Hmmmmmm, I wonder how long this tube will last - I have a replacement lined up anyway. If it goes again too soon I will rethink my desk lamp option then. The tubes are pricey to keep replacing.

I've had my desk lamp for 6 or 7 years at least and I've never had to change the bulb. I just got a clip-on lamp from Michael's (yes, with a 50% off coupon), and I'm curious to see if there will be any difference in how long the bulb for this one will last. But yes, I would say that the bulbs do last for a VERY long time!

So the desk lamp is different from the Task Lamp? Is it pricer than the task lamp?
I have had an OTT light for well over 7 years and have never changed the bulb. I bought it so I could stamp in our RV and used it a lot. I found it cast too much shadow for my taste. (the natural light Ott Light) Of course the problem was that in my stamp room, my husband attached 2 florescent (sp?) tubes to my desk under the cabinet and I have wonderful lighting with no shadows, so I am spoiled.
Since we no longer RV (no need, we live in the country) I now have the OTT light in a corner that has very little light and use it when I work in that area.

I work in a dark attic area, and have multiple 'daylight' lamps, as well as regular bulbs- 6 lights in a small space. I've had an Ott light for over 20 years and never changed the bulb, but it is the small flip up one and isn't used as much. I have 2 floor models of the cheaper version, and have never changed a bulb. These lights were only 20 or so dollars at Big Lots, they have floor and desk versions. You can also buy different watts and shapes of bulbs in craft stores (ACM defiantely has them here), but you can also get them at hardware stores and put them in any lamp, I think. They come in different watts like regular bulbs, so cost, light cast, and shadows cast will depend on that. I would never put 2 colors together without holding it under the 'natural' light bulb! My DH tried to get me to replace my regular bulbs with the low voltage twirly ones, but they have to work up to full light, and cast such a yellow light I was removing them before he was back down the stairs!
I have 3 of them and I love them. I do intricate cross stitch and knitting too and it is perfect for doing that kind of craft as well as giving such a true light. I have 2 table top models and 1 floor model

I have the same OTT light (as well as as floor stand model that arcs over my drafting table) - it gives off wonderful light and I really like how it turns on - up is on, down is off and there is a nice carrying handle at the top. The bulbs ARE expensive, but I have had this light for probably 10-12 years and have never had to replace a bulb....so I would say the bulb is expensive because it is worth it!!
I have two ott lights. One gas a base that sits on my desk with a gooseneck. The other is on the other end of my desk(it's an old dining room table that seats 14) is a larger gooseneck that can sit on the desktop or clamp on. I love them and couldn't imagine crafting without them. I bought them both from Joann's 50% coupon used. I haven't had to replace a light bulb yet but do know you can use 50% coupons at Joann's for replacement bulbs.

I have both an OTT Light and a Daylight (more decorative style). The thing I like about both aside from the true color, is that the bulbs don't get hot. That's especially important to me during the warmer months. I bought both at AC Moore with a coupon (which are also good to use on replacement bulbs as they are expensvie). However, I haven't had to buy a replacement bulb for either light. Now I use the Daylight far more often because it's in the family room, but I have had it for several years and probably use it most nights.
The only problem I had with the OTT light was that initially I had a hard time getting the bulb installed (but I did finally get it in) and then the adapter (plug) went bad, but OTT had (might still have) a special program where if I paid for the shipping to return the adapter they would replace the adapter for free and sent me an extra light bulb to make up for the shipping I had to pay. While I waiting for it to come back I bought the other lamp (I'm impatient). So now I have one for the basement too.
I ended up getting the floor model at JoAnn's (50 % off)...really glad I did. I can pull it over to my table and bend the light directly over my work.(and I don't have something else sitting on my table taking up space). At first I was dissappointed that they were sold out of the table top model...but now I'm glad I got the floor model.
I have the floor model and 2 tabletop models and love them all. I bought the floor model for my husband as he has very low vision and this light is a god-send for him. I have my 2 tabletop lamps in my craft room and use them all the time. I bought the floor model years ago and only had to replace the bulb once and I haven't had to replace the bulbs in either tabletop lamps yet. I did buy replacement bulbs at Joann's with a coupon just to have them as backup.
I have one and love it! I mainly use it for lighting in my photos though because I have main 300 watt halogen light on the ceiling of my craft room that is awesome!!!
