I just picked up a Big Kick for $50 (had a coupon!). I hadn't even researched it at all, but I'm glad this thread is here. I would have preferred the Big Shot (for aesthetics), but I couldn't beat this price. I don't think I could have another SU party to get enough hostess credits to get any discount for the Big Shot anyway!

I will read through this thread to read up on any tips!

Default What's the difference between the Big Shot and the Big Kick?

I love my little cuttlebug! I have been thinking about getting a Big Shot or a Big Kick. What is the difference between these two machines? Can I use my Nestabilities with either one? Thanks!

BS and BK are the same machine, just cosmetically/aesthetically appear different.

Yes, you can use those dies with either one of them.

Are the BK and BS heavier duty machines than the Wizard and Cuttlebug? I find myself fearing for my Bug sometimes with the stuff I make it do. (I already blew one up once.) Thanks in advance.

I have used both the CB and the BS. I do believe that the BS is the best machine on the market today. It is so much studier than than the bug. I will have had my BS 3 years coming this Christmas. You wouldn't believe the things I've done with it. I was using a bug and tried to emboss brass stencil using a sandwich posted here on SCS and I broke the plates and then bent the brass stencil in half! I couldn't wait to get back to my beloved BS. Get the BS you will not be sorry!!

Thanks. Now for the really stupid question. After driving all over to find a Jo-Anns that actually had one ... which one is the red & white one? I figure that everything is the same but I'd like to check with the experts first.

nm. I see now that the red one is "the original" and not quite as wide.

Billie, the Red & White one is the Big Kick. It has a 2 piece body where the Big Shot has a one piece body. They are supposed to be the same but one is for the Big Box stores, the Big Kick. I personally like my BS the best. Yes, the Red one is the Original Sizzix. You may also find a little red or pink machine. That is the SideKick and it works with all the Sizzlits and Embosslits. It is very portable and great for doing quick things with the Sizzlits.

Thank you, Helene. I thought I read somewhere that the BIGXL dies won't work on the red machine. I'd rather have the black and pink or turquoise but ... the red one is all that I've found so far. I supposed it's also due to no LSS in my immediate area.

Do you have Archiver's? They carry the machines and dies.
If not find a SU! demo and order during SAB.

I have an Archiver's about 40 minutes away. I'm also trying to not pay more than $50 for the machine. Coupon mania.

What's SAB?

SAB is Sale A Bration. SU! holds this each year and they offer a free stamp set with each $50.00 spent. Last year they also added a punch for a free choice. It is from the middle of Jan. to the end of March this coming year.

Running around at lunch and on my way home from work:
Michael's has the blue one. $99 and 40% coupon
JoAnns has the red and white one. $99 and 40% coupon.
JoAnns online shows the pink one at 40% off. $59.99 and then at least $10 shipping.
Hobby Lobby doesn't carry but has the Epic 6 and the Spellbinder Grand Calibur. 40% coupon
Archiver's ( I called) has the black and pink one for $99 and the Big Shot Express (didn't ask price) and 30% coupon

And ... a 50% off coupon came for Michael's for this weekend! Too bad they don't carry the black and pink machine. I'm beat! *laugh*

Just to clarify, the "red Sizzix" and the red & white Big Kick are two different machines. the "red Sizzix" is the old (I believe original) Sizzix for home use.

I have a BK and a BS (inherited the BS when I already had a BK) and they're both fantastic machines. They both feel very sturdy and I haven't had a problem with either one. I tend to use the BK more, but that's probably because I had it before the BS and it's my comfy machine.

I gave my CB to my kids when I got a BK to use the BigzXL dies when they came out a year or so ago. The kids love the CB. I wish I had given them one right off and not wasted my money on the CuttleKids machine.

The Calibur cannot accommodate the thick dies like the Original Sizzix. It's made for thinner dies like Spellbinders, QuicKutz, Boss, Sizzix Sizzlits, etc.

The BS Express doesn't appeal to me because the whole electric thing just seems like one more widget that can go wrong. I've read of burnt out motors, too. However, my neighbor with Fibro loves her BSE and it's a lifesaver for her.

ETA My advice, after ready MANY posts on the subject, is to avoid the Epic 6 machine.

Are there any issues with the Big Kick's handle? It doesn't seem as sturdy as the Big Shot's. Since I will probably be moving the machine around alot I'm concerned about the handle holding up to frequent use.

Just read the whole board and couldn't find an answer to my question. I have a Cuttlebug but just purchased some preorder Spellbinder dies for card edges. I'm making wedding invitations for my granddaughter and want to put a decorative edge on the tall side of the card. The card will be 6 1/2 inches tall. How WIDE is the opening in the Big ShotKick and will it accommodate a card that size. I realize the dies are 6" wide and would have to be placed again. As I'm typing this, I think I'm answering my own question - it won't work! Is there a machine that would work? Thanks!

Still looking. Looks like the Spellbinder Grand Caliber will do it. Now, on to tutorials for the edge dies!

Default Big Shot/Kick cutting plates

The clear acrylic cutting plates for the Big Shot/Kick are 6-1/8" wide by 8-7/8" long. If your paper measurements are smaller than that and would fit on the cutting plate, could the edge die go through the machine the long way?

Thanks. The card is a tri-fold that measures 6 1/2 inches tall by 4 1/2 inches wide. I want to do the edge on the long side. I've never used a Spellbinder edge before so I don't even know the answer to this question. Can I make the edge while the card is folded, or will an impression end up on the other side of the card? I've been looking into the Grand Calibur but don't know if I'll use it enough to justify paying for it.
