You're not alone on this... I can not cut a straight line if my life depended on it!
So if you find out how to Please let me know too!
I draw a straight line on the side that will not show and then line that up with the line where the metal blade meets the plastic scissor bit. Seems to work so far!
I do either the draw a line on the back to follow with the scissors, or trim the paper down to about 3/8" larger than you need it to be and then cut along the edge with the scallop scissors. I don't think my cuts are always 100% straight either, but so far no one's come up with a ruler to check.
I have trouble getting straight scallops with scissors too. But I just figured out how to do scallops with my corner rounder! And now they are straight every time! Here are my two posts about it in this thread from the other day: Forums at Splitcoaststampers
This works for the bigger scallops.... for small ones I guess we have to continue with the scissors. HOH!
I'm not very good with the decorative scissors either, but I recently bought the Cutterpede Mini rotary cutter (http://www.wilde-ideas.com/Vndrs/EKS/Cutterpede.html) at Hobby Lobby and it's attachment blades. I think the cutter was only about $10 and the attachment blades (4 or 5 different ones) were each about $6. I used the 40% off coupons all in one week and it works GREAT! I probably use it more than my big rotary cutter.
I do this every time I cut with a decorative scissor. I am right handed and hold my scissors in that hand. I hold the cardstock in my left hand at the top. I cut the left side of the cardstock. This allows you to see the edge of the cardstock and you use the edge as a guide. When you cut on the right side the scissor is in the way and you can't see if you are cutting stright. When your left side is cut move the top to the left side and repeat until all sides are done. The key is always holding the piece at the top with your left hand and cutting on the left side. It is awkward at first but will be better after a few tries.
