Does everyone use a Cuttlebug now or are there still people who emboss the "old-fashioned way"?
I have never embossed but would like to start, and every card I see that I like, they have used a Cuttlebug on it. I'm worried that I won't get the same effect if I do it by hand.
Any thoughts on this?
I don't have a cuttlebug, was thinking about getting one. But I like the thought of manual embossing. I think it is kind of relaxing to do (if you have lots of time) because I just love to look at it and know that I did that and not a machine.
That said, I have very little time to stamp or scrapbook, so for me a cuttlebug would probably be a better choice.

I bought the Big Shot because of it's stability compared to the Cuttlebug. But I use all the CB stuff with it and LOVE it! I would NEVER emboss the old way because it really hurt my hands, and now I do it ALL the time AND it looks MUCH nicer!
Another vote for the Cuttlebug here. I don't have the time to do it the old fashioned way and don't own a light table so I couldn't get good results by hand. I love, love, love the cuttlebug and highly recommend it.

Love my Cuttlebug! I will admit that I did hand emboss before the bug and really liked to "zone out" and emboss - I was a hard sell for the Cuttlebug but once I got mine (with the coupon) I never looked back!! Go for it!
I have the Big Shot and love how I can put anything through it! I just sit on the floor watching TV and crank those babies through. The cuttlebug does have great dies though so it's nice to be able to use all of the variety out there.
The old fashioned way is nice for simple things, but there is NO WAY you would EVER want to emboss things like the designs that are in the CB folders!! Oh my gosh, your hand would fall off, I'm sure!
I guess Im the ONLY one here for the old fashioned way......I do it by hand. I dont emboss that often so I really dont feel the expense of a machine and templates is worth it to me.
Plus, and this is only me....I feel like it's such a cheat! I like the satisfaction of doing it by hand.

I love my Cuttlebug for it's size and quality products. Plus, you can use other companies diecuts in it. Definitely look for a 40-50% coupon to get huge savings, though. Embossing the *old fashioned way* is very hard for me since I have advanced arthritis in my hands, so I love my CB!!! Now, what to do with my light table!?!?!
Although I do like the look of the cuttlebug cards and I know this tool cuts down on time and energy in producing such beautiful cards.... I have told dh to NOT buy me one because I like to emboss the "old fashioned way". In the end, I like to look at my card and think "I did the whole thing, myself!!"
Just my own view.
Happy embossin' and stampin'

There is a cuttlebug FAQ thread.. Basically it says to go get plumbers rubber (5x6 piece of rubber from the plumbing department) then you spritz your SU cardstock and layer, A, rubber, paper, B. Hope that helps.. Try to find the FAQ thread and it will help a ton!
I ordered a Cuttlebug off Ebay! M's wouldn't take the coupon for them, because Cuttlebug is made by Cricut, and they don't do coupons. got a good deal on Ebay. Can't wait.

ARGH! I hate it when M's does that. Cuttlebug and Cricut are both made by Provo Craft but no where on the coupon does it say you can't use it on Provo Craft items. If I remember right, the box says, "From the makers of Cricut" and I have read that many people have made a stink about this at M's and won.

I agree. This is just so infuriating that some of the Michael's employees just don't "get it."

Definately the bug! I have used several other systems and bought the bug. Got it for 40% from Joann's and also the same day used a $5 off $35 purchase so it was a great deal. Love it! Quick and easy and heard rumors they are coming out with some great new embossing folders.
I use my Cuttlebug a lot for embossing, but there are many times that I still emboss "the old fashioned way", simply because there might be a certain look that I want from my enbossing that's unattainable with the CB.
For example, when using brass stencils with the CB, sometimes I only want one image from the stencil embossed into my paper. Running the entire stencil through the CB will undoubtedly emboss all of the stencil's images onto my paper. In this case, embossing by hand is the only way to go. But when you want that embossed all-over look, the CB just can't be beat!
I love my cuttlebug. As everyone says it is sooooo quick. I do however have some brass templates that I still love to use. I like to stamp on my c/s, then run it through the cuttlebug. You won't be sorry if you buy one, but use a coupon, especially a 50% off.
Love it! I got mine $47 with coupon at Michaels and have picked up 3 for friends since that. Took the money I saved and went online and got about 10 folders for $4.25 and no shipping!
I have done some 'old fashioned' embossing and had fun doing it. My only problem with the regular way is that I often want to emboss on dark colored cardstock and the just doesn't work with a brass template and a light table. My Christmas cards from a couple years ago I used a brass template and mellow moss cardstock (hard to tell but I do have it posted in my gallery) I cheated and used a pencil to trace the template first then did the embossing because it was too dark to use the light table. Good thing you can't see the back of the tree!
