On Ebay, search for acrylic plate die cutting. There are lots of generic plates from China at very cheap prces.

sbd and I had a PM conversation, but I'll put the info here in case anyone else wants to try the Accuquilt mat rather than the Olfa:

platform/acrylic plate/die (cutting side up)/cardstock/self-healing mat/shim

I use cereal boxes or cardstock (or both) as shims. You kind of have to play around with the shims because different machines and different dies require different thicknesses, but that was true for me with the plates that came with the Big Shot, as well.
