I asked this in the humongo Copic thread, but it didn't get answered.
I now have an additional question too.
1) When I airbrush with my Copics, the end result has a tacky/sticky finish that I don't get when I color my backgrounds.
I'm using Neenah paper.
2) I have the Airbrush System that uses the aircans and a hose. If I switch to a compresser (most likely the Harbor Freight one), do I need to buy a whole different set?
How strange, this Kathy has the same exact problem with the same paper. I actually don't bother using my ABS anymore because I can't figure out what's wrong. I'm sure it's user error, and I've been too lazy to research it further. Hope someone knows the solution!
Me too! I use a variety of papers. SU! Whisper White, Gina K's Pure Luxury White, Copic X-Press It. I get the same tackiness with airbrushing on all of them. Never when I color an image. I use a Paasche air compressor.
I answer to your question about getting a whole new kit......no you don't if you have the ABS-3 kit. Instead of attaching the regulator (little can with the marker holder on it) to your air can, you attach it to the hose on your compressor! HTH.
Hey Kathi - this is normal. Happens all the time. I think it is because with the airbrushing, the ink is sitting on top of the paper instead of soaking into the paper.
Depends on which components you have. The grip is the same... the can might be different - it is an adapter can. If you have the ABS2 - the can attaches directly to the grip... if you have a kit where the air adapter connects to a separaate can, then you can use that with an air compressor. You might just have to buy a new adapter hose... it depends on what comes with the compressor. Originally I used my husbands LOUD one... it needed an adapter. However, I bought a harbor freight one, and the cord with that was the right size.
The tackiness is somewhat normal and should go away as the ink dries. To avoid the tackiness, spray multiple thin layers of ink instead of one thick layer. If you spay on a thin layer and let it dry completely and then add another thin layer you can create nice depth without the tackiness.
You can also seal the piece after it is done with a spay sealer (Super Seal is good)...just make sure to add a thin layer and make sure the sealer you use does not contain alcohol.
As for the ABS unit... if you have ABS1 - then the only thing you will need to connect it to a compressor is a new hose. The hose in ABS1 has a different fitting on the end than what you need and won't connect to a compressor. You need a hose with either a 1/8 or 1/4 nut fitting. (sold where most Copic products are sold.)
Hope this helps.

I hope you all are still reading this thread.
I have the Copic ABS and tonight I found that some of my markers couldn't get color out of the chisel tip. The brush tip airbrushed great. Any suggestions?
Most of my markers are new so I know they aren't out of ink. I made sure the marker "clicked" into the grip, and that the chisel nib was flush with the plastic or pushed in all the way.
Any suggestion would be appreciated!!

I watched a video on trouble shooting the air brush system with Copics.
One thing she said was is you are not getting ink be sure the chisel is not only flush but lined up with the edge of the air brush holder
If you are using the Sketch marker, sometimes it wiggles just a bit. If it doesn't seem to be working correctly, the first thing I do is actually pull the nib out just a hair. Sometimes if it's pushed all the way in, it won't line up just right. So grab the chisel nib and pull it out just a touch. That usually fixes it. Also... make sure it is straight up and down and not tilted to the side a bit.
One of the things I like to do when I airbrush is to remove both caps... that way the air flows more smoothly through the marker and seems to give me more consistent coverage.
Try those things and see if they help...

I am thinking of buying an airbrush system and want to know does it use a lot of ink? I'm beginning to buy my refills as my Copics go dry. Love my Copics!
Airbrushing actually uses less ink than coloring because the ink sits on the surface of the paper instead of saturating it like you do when you color with the marker.
