Cheapest way to acquire lots of different ribbon...
That was a mouthful, but that's exactly what I'm wondering. I live in a small house and can't justify the cost or the space it takes to buy hundreds of spools of ribbon.
Any of you have any ideas how to get lots of different ribbon inexpensively? I don't necessarily need a lot of each one, but just lots of different ones. I suppose I could buy it buy the yard. Also, what is your favorite type? I have some organdy, but that seems to be going "out". I'm not one for trendy; I really like "old faithful" kind of stuff (if that makes any sense).
There are several people on this site that host ribbon shares...that' s a great way to get a variety. RABOM {Ribbons and Bows Oh My} is an excellent site to buy ribbon...they sometimes have sales and that's when I personally stock up on the various grosgrains...otherwise I use to get spools of ribbon in the M's & J's $1 bins...
I've actually had good luck at Wal-Mart in their craft and sewing sections. You can buy a yard or two at a time for a really low amount of money. Also, check out fabric stores in your area - lots of times, they'll have a clearance bin of remnants of ribbon for pennies! I love to have a big selection, but like you, don't need an entire roll of each one!

Sandy, I too live in a Small house. However I have purchase Ribbon from various places.
And I store mine in a Wide Iris Cart drawer.
Something else I have done for traveling and this might work for you too.
Is to purchase a couple of yards of Ribbon and then coil them up. Place them in a Plastic Stamp box. and This way you can have more ribbon without taking up that much space.
Or you could purchase the Tiny Spools of ribbon and store them a Jar.
I have one that is Plastic or acrylic with a top. I also have purchase my Ribbon from various places too. And I like buying ribbon by the yard too.
This is where I buy my ribbon...Heidi has a deal where you can get 5 yards of each color. There is often a color in there that I probably wouldn't have bought if I just had to pick specific colors, and then I always love digging into my stash of ribbon and finding that exact match. I can afford to do it here!
I get my ribbon at the fabric stores. They usually sell a bag of odds and ends really cheap. You get a good variety and I've never had pieces less than 2 feet (for 12x12 scrapbook pages).

I have bought lots of 1 ft lengths of ribbons on there- I bought SU- but i have seen many different kinds!!
The last lot i bought was current color families in SU- It was a great deal!

If you have a SU demo, ask if she's doing a ribbon sampler special (explain it - she may call it something else). I do these occasionally and they are always well liked! We all love bits and pieces of ribbon but rarely use enough to justify buying yards and yards of the same color.

I have got tons of ribbon going to yard sales and estate sales, especially where ladies were sewers or crafters. I hit two particularly good ones last
year. One was where 3 sisters were selling ribbon that they had bought for making hair ribbons. They had it in a huge laundry basket that was totaly full
of ribbon that were from a foot long to yards. They were only charging like one or two cents for each piece no matter how long. I went for all the grosgrain I could find and then on to anything that looked good for cards or scrapping. I ended up with a big grocery bag stuffed full of every color, print etc. even pieces of lace.
Then I have picked up velvet ribbon, rickrack, buttons, ect. at estate sales.
I also joined a ribbon and button swap last year.
To hold all my pieces of ribbon, I have a plastic gallon ice cream bucket that has a wire handle. Poke holes all around in rows, (i used the cropidile 2)some holes I did bigger for the little bit wider ribbon, you can even poke holes in the lid. It holds a lot.
You can use it for small lengths or long. With all ribbon hanging out of the
holes it looks pretty--its cheaper and holds more than the online one and is
light weight and can be carried by the handle.
I have gotten a lot of ribbon from swaps. I also bought ribbon from Michael's. They have some cute ribbon that used to be $1 a roll. Now they run 2 rolls for $3. Still not all that bad.

Yeah, but imagine how much stamping you could get done if you could take all of your supplies to jail with you! ;) j/k
I love Joanne's for their .99 cent spools of ribbon. Super cheap and they seem to last me quite a while.
I think i have evey color of those satin type ribbons that they sell for about 50 cents each (found at walmart, michaels, and joannes) There is a ton of ribbon on the spool, but if i am making a bunch of the same card, then i am sure to have enough. And though they dont match SU perfectly, I have enough different colors that i can find something that will work with my card. Im not a very good at whats in style so maybe these satin ribbons arent the best, but I like them, I dont think that my card recipients are critiquing my ribbn useage.

she has an awesome ribbon club that once a month you get 5-8 different ribbons all in the same color family or theme. You get 2 yards of each ribbon. I love seeing the different variety of ribbons before I order them! I store mine on ribbon cards with 2-3 different ribbons per card when they are only 2 yards of each.

Once you have your ribbon, a good way I've found to store a LOT of ribbon in a small place is to wind it on round wooden clothes pens (doll-head ) which cost about 10cents each @ ACMoore. You can wind about 5 yards on each pen (depending on width),just tape one end to pen, wind, pull other end tightly thru the 2 "legs", secure with straight pin & toss into basket. I was able to fit over 150 spools of ribbon into just one basket! The spools are what take up so much room.
I am hosting a ribbon swap right now, this way you buy 1 spool and get back so many yards of each color. You can click on the swap on my signature to check it out!!
Here's a link to a thread I started a while ago. The Ribbon Retreat is an awesome company (I am not affiliated)! You can order their ribbon by the yard, so you can get as much or as little as you want. Also listed in the thread, I matched their colors to SU colors. HTH-- Jamie

I'm not in the swap, but I've ordered from here a bunch of times and the prices are great, the selection is amazing, and shipping is super fast!
I am ordering from Hedgehog. she has a chart to match SU colors. her stitched ribbon is 10 yds for $3.00. She has great prices! http://www.pinkhedgehogpapercrafts.com
I'm Ireland and I'm a fiber addict. I use mine on art quilts and cards and have a *ahem* huge.... really huge stash.
ANYWAY - when I was an SU business demo, I would have open houses and "craft sales" where I sold 5 yd samples of all my fibers (non-SU ribbon and fibers) - I had hundreds packaged up in small ziploc bags.
I'd love to get rid of the packaged ones as I'm not a business demo anymore and they are occupying a huge box I could use for other things.
I think I'll post in the Buy/Sell - I didn't think that others may want the same wide variety as I love having.

I found some ribbon at Big Lots for $1 per roll. Each roll had at least 12 feet and one roll had about 30 feet! That one roll has been used for my cards, given away in RAKs, used in ribbon swaps and is still half full. And I still have another roll of that ribbon to go through. It was Heidi Grace ribbon and of good quality. I've also found ribbon cards with a selection of 5 or 6 types for about $2 at Big Lots. Also, try the dollar stores, sometimes they have rolls there. There are also thrift stores to check out.
I love ribbon too! I have tons, swear I'll not buy anymore, then can't help myself, I buy more! I give away alot, RAK's, but still have a ton. Guess I'll always have alot, as I love it and keep shopping.
Thanks so much to everybody who mentioned Pink Hedgehog - I placed a HUGE order and it came really quickly and the prices were great!! I LOVE the fact that you can get all sorts of assortments and I also got some bulk brads too. I'll definitely be ordering from them again!!
I love ribbon and I always go to the remnant counter of wal-mart, the fabric stores and the craft stores and often I can get a bag of mixed ribbon remnants for like a dollar or two- sometimes there are pieces I don't like but more often there is a wide variety and I get to play with stuff that I might not have selected on my own.
