Here's to hoping SU! is paying attention:
How many of us have posted: wondering about; frustrated with SU! inkpads that are concave and fray at the edges? I haven't purchased an SU! inkpad in several years (have the inks and put them on a clear transparency), and am waiting, more or less patiently, hoping they'll come out with a better designed inkpad.
Now in the really big scheme of things (world peace, world hunger) this is pretty small potatoes, but in the stampin world -- I hope they're taking note -- enough already! SU!, please go back to the drawing board and figure out a pad that A) is a smooth surface and B) has edges that don't fray. With all the fantastic people working with SU!, I'm confident they can find a solution! In the meantime -- I'll continue to boycott.
I have always hated their ink pads. They fray and I can never open them. It's nice to have paper and ink that match but I can come pretty close with other brands of ink.
I know why the stamp pads fray and thats easy to avoid, although I hate how they cave in the middle causing uneven inkage. It makes me mad, SU! says "Oh our products are superior" well not your ink pads. I have only had my ink pads a year and they are caving in. Who wants to replace their ink pads once a year?
The only time I have had them fray is if I rub the background stamps across them (not recommended anyway) but all I have to do is trim and they are just fine.

Well, the pads fray if you rub your stamps on them. I have had my pads for about 4 years now and no fraying, I'm not a rubber LOL Gee, that sounds bad, but I'm a tapper.
That is also why they are sometimes concave, you are always hitting that same place. I have tried to move stamp around and hit the edges sometimes. I know some people have trouble opening them but just get your demo to show you, it's not hard really and it keeps them from drying out. I have chalk ink pads that I bought a year ago in AC Moore and they are dry already because of the way they close and the way the pad rests.
Wow! Never have had any problems with mine at all and some of my pads I have had for several years now. I do agree with the the other poster about not rubbing stamps onto the pad. My upline always says not rubbing just gentle applause.

I try to rotate the position of my pads when I use them - sort of like how you're suppose to rotate your mattress to prevent caving/sinking in one place. And regarding fraying edges - just trim them. They look good as new and pad is fine.
I love my pads... a few that I use a lot for a direct to paper look... the brown shades mainly... are a bit frayed... but after two years of workshop/class level use I have not had a problem. When I use my pads I make an effort to be a "tapper"...and use the full surface of the pad.... but I have never had to replace a pad.
Sorry to cross the picket line!
Of course if you feel like you have a defective pad... I'm sure it happens on occasion... call SU and let them know.
I love my SU ink pads, I love their lids, (safety feature to me, so my toddler can't just get them all out and play with them) I do have some ink pads that are fraying, but I also love to rub my BG stamps across them. The fraying doesn't bother me much, it just doesn't look that nice. I see it kind of like a dirty stamp. If you use it a lot it will get dirty. (same thing with ink pads)

Same here. Also keeping the juicy keeps them level. My pads a good workout and they are all fine. Other than an occasional fray..... which snips right off.

I love my pads also! I do tap, and rub also! I haven't had a *real* problem with fraying, but I know I can trim anything should it need it. I happen to think that our ink pads are a superior quality especially in price comparison! Their size is much larger than most competitors, giving you more room to work with. If it sags in the middle, stamp towards the edges more!
But I *totally* agree with Sarah- if you feel they are at all defective, call SU or your demo!!
I love my SU! Ink Pads! I did have fraying with some of them ... but that's because I do rub them across the background stamps. No worries - I just trim them off and they're fine. My black pad did get a little "dip" in the middle but it's 5 years old! I love the flip lid that keeps the ink pad upside down when it's stored AND the fact that the lid stays on (no lost lids). I think the case is also very durable (mine go through a LOT)! I'm a hobby demo so I have all the SU! Ink pads plus lots of others I've collected along the way but I really love my SU! ink pads best of all!
I totally LOVE my SU ink pads. I do not have any problems with them. I have had Brilliant Blue, my first ink pad, for almost 4 years. They are the BEST in my opinion.
Mine do fray on occasion, I just snip the edges. A couple cave in but I don't mind that either, but there is little in life that I truly complain about. Although I admit the pads are a little hard to open I am *so* thankful they are kid proof! (Markers and stickles unfortunately are not!)

I am not a demo, but I do have almost all the SU colors, and really like them. I have had a few fray, but I just give them a little haircut and they are good to go. I stopped getting frayed edges when I started using my brayer for background stamps. Better coverage and no fraying. I also had an issue with my black dipping in the middle, but a good reinking and I solved that problem. I think of it as the little wear indicators on my tires. When you see the little indicators, it is time for new tires. When I see a dip in my pad, it is time for reinking! But, just as all stamps are not for everyone, all stamp pads are not for everyone. That is why TAC and CTMH are around. OK, that's not the only reason, but you get the picture.
Except the time I snapped my finger in one and had to get stitches....
I just want you to know I talk about you ALL the time at my workshops and classes, especially if there is a new stamper. I show them how to open the pad and say, "Pay attention, if you don't open them correctly you could loose a finger." Everyone laughs but I keep a completly straight face and tell them I *know* someone who got stitches from an out of control ink pad LOL
You are like big foot with my girls, I don't really think they believe you exist
I own all the SU ink pads and craft pads and I LOVE THEM!!! I threw away all the cheap ink pads I owned when I bought the SU ones. I sometimes see fraying on a pad when I am running it on a background stamp.. nothing that a pair of scissors, and simply trimming the frays away don't take care of.
I would say that if you aren't happy with the SU ink pads, why don't you contact them, rather than posting your negative comments here. Seems to me that SU wouldn't be able to do much to help you if you don't contact them. If I had a problem with my vehicle or an electronic item I purchased, the manufacturer wouldn't be able to do much in resolving the issue for me if I only posted my dissatisfaction on a website.
For the money, the SU ink pads and stamps are THE BEST hands down!

I love my SU pads! I use them and abuse them and they are great! The frays I just trim off because I am a big weathered, worn look fan on my papers! When my black pad was concaving in the middle I just began using the outer edges and it went back to normal, like flipping my mattress! I guess what I love the most is everything matches! I can't stand having inks and papers that don't coordinate. I don't ever have to leave the comfort of my stamping room to get my paper and my ink, I just place my order and wait for that cute UPS man!
I agree with most people here that SU Ink pads are the best. Even when I ink up a background stamp I tap, tap, tap and do one or two quick rubs to even the ink out. Something else to think about is that the inkpads weren't designed to last forever and ever. Especially with the colors you use a lot you may have to replace every so often.
I think they are the best . If they fray it takes about 5 seconds to trim them and if you can't open them have someone show you how,if you still don't understand try a second lesson, it's not rocket science. I have other ink pads and hardly use them.
I have used several other companies and brands and have to say, love love love my SU pads - IMO they're the best out there - the way they close and their size especially. I get brays when I dtp, too, but no worries, just a little haircut!

I find that I like my spots for inking up the really big stamps (where the concave ink pad might be annoying). Especially with the monogram alphabet stamps - they ink up really nicely with spots. Have you tried them? I like to do it that way sometimes, with the stamp upside down on the table and apply the ink to the stamp with the spot. Just a thought.
I LOVE my SU pads, I have even before I was a demo. I agree with the others here, if you're having that much difficulty, you need to contact your demo. If you don't have one, call SU direct. I still have some of the old SU style pads which I've never had to re-ink, I've had the new style in every color since the new style came out, never had to re-ink and I do a lot of stamp-a-stacks. Sure, I see a concave in the middle of my pad and frayed edges. The edges don't bother me and the concave, I just press harder on background stamps and use a different area of the pad for smaller stamps.

I like my SU inkpads.. I have all of the colors in the old style and a few of the colors in the new style... I will say the old style pads with the smaller surface hold up much better (and I'm a rubber AND a tapper!). I would use other pads, but like the color coordination with these...
JEANNIEBEANIE- Stampin UP wont see your message here! They are open and welcome to concerns from users of their products (Demos and Customers alike), but the place to reach them is thru an email, phone call or written.
Im not sure there is the perfect anything for everyone, we just all accomodate how we use things the best we can. SUs pads definitely are NOT inferior, just not working for you. And boycotting stamp pads.... well I boycott fur, I boycott anything Paris Hilton advertises for......lol
I love the ink pads, and yah some of mine dip in the center and fray, but other companies do too as well, some worse than SUs!!
I just "make it work" as Tim would say!!

Well I guess your boycott isn't working. So many as the above poster suggested you might want to drop them a line.
As a side note about concave inkpads---someone SU spoke about this at the convention where they 1st came out with these inkpads & recommended using the ENTIRE inkpad surface. They said to stamp all around the inkpad surface to prevent the surface from becoming concave. They also said to not rub the surface, just tap, tap, tap. I get lazy sometimes & will rub the surface onto my stamp............
It's quite interesting to read people's posts! I love my inkpads & still even have my old ones from '99. I'm glad SU came out with the style that we have now (even though I have a hard time putting them back together when the lid pops off)! Those are the ones that I replace & it's only happened twice........

I love SU! ink colors but don't love the cases. I just buy the reinkers and buy my own uninked pads. They take 1 1/2 bottles of reinker but they never cave in the middle. I have found a way that works for me and I can keep using the best ink around.

Hmmm....I find it is not so much of an issue of the middle sinking as it is the sides rising up. I don't care though. I rub all my stamps that's the only way I can get good coverage. Rub, rub, tap, tap. I don't care what SU tells me to do, I do what I want. They are not the boss of me. LOL! I sound like my 4 yo! Sometimes they fray, I just trim them. Doesn't bother me. I still think they are great stamp pads and it's just never been an issue for me.
All this being said, Jeaniebean, you have every right to dislike them and every right to not purchase. That is your right as a consumer.

I LOVE my SU inkpads....the clever way they close, the size of the pad, the matching of their colors (except Vintage Violet---arrrgh the paper is gorgeous, the ink not so) But I also rub a bit on my Bkgd. stamps...so fraying is my own fault...I trim when needed.
some of them have a dip here or there...i work around it.
I am a hobby demo! But that is NOT why I love them!
