I've had my Big Shot for about 3 years now and for the last several months I've had trouble getting my more detailed dies to cut properly. If they were closer to the edges of the cutting plates they would cut better, but it still took a couple layers of cardstock shim to get a complete cut, but in the middle they wouldn't hardly work. Then I found out about the metal shim plates, so I got one of them and it helped quite a bit- I use it with every cut now- but sometimes I still can't get a complete cut. Just wondering if anybody knows if you can replace the rollers- or where to get replacement parts if you can- or am I gonna have to break down and get a whole new machine...?
So, I think that you should contact the company. I personally do not have the big shot, but I have heard that they will replace the machine and or send parts to fix it. I do not know this for sure, but you don't have anything to lose by contacting them.
It does sound like the mechanism that holds the pressure of the rollers has loosened up.
I don't know about a 'metal shim.' But this is what the Precision Base Plate is made for. Don't use it for non-detailed dies, like squares and circles. Is you Big Shot still cutting those? I understand the rollers can get loose, but new plastic cutting plates would be the first thing I would try. My P.B.P. is great for details.
Michael's has them, and recently had 50% off coupons.
It's possible that your machine is wearing out but I've had my machine for years and years and most of the time the problem is warped plates or dull dies. The precision plate was a waste and I went back to using my metal shim.
Try placing your die at an angle so the pressure is in different places. Also try running the layers through a few times. On some of my dies, it takes up to 3 passes to get it cut. Finally, it may be the dies.
Thanks for the info...:D Yes, I have new plates. Some non-detailed dies don't completely cut on the first pass so have to turn them and roll through again. I got a new die awhile back- one of the card front dies- and I couldn't get it to cut at all even with a cardstock shim (which was sad 'cause I loved the die:( ) but now with the metal shim I can eventually get it cut if I roll it through several times. I may try contacting the Big Shot company- gonna have to get it fixed soon or find a new one 'cause I use it for my cards all the time;)
I've been wondering about this myself. I know that buying new plates helped a lot.
If that doesn't work, I would look on YouTube for a video that talks about resetting the tension on the BS. I know that on the bottom of the machine, there are some screws that will tighten the roller. Take a look and see if it's an easy thing to do on your own.
