Hi me - expanding my wings! After a little research, I am super sure I want to go with Primsa and not copic markers ~ I have checked our local 2 Mikes and will need to find these online.
Where is the best place online for good prices on the prismacolor markers?
And, from my best understanding, I don't need the gamsol - that is for the prisma colored pencils, right?
I did a google search and a bunch of places came up - but I'd love to hear your tried and true places for good prices, nice service and good shipping turn around.
Kelly, if you aren't going to Mike's and using a coupon for the Prisma markers, you might try ebay.
That is where I got a set of them really cheap. Lots of people have them for sale on a regular basis. Just be sure to check their feedback before you order.
The set I got was new in the package. I would be afraid of buying used ones from someone I didn't know.

No Hobby Lobby - I wish! And our Mike's hasn't had them - I think I'm going to have to order them online. Wish I didn't have to! I like to buy IRL as much as possible but if I have to buy them online, I would love to know a good company to work with! :-D
Is your Michael's out-of-stock or just doesn't carry them? I bought my set a Michael's with my 40% off coupon. That was the best deal I could find. Once you buy them, I know you will love 'em. I think they are great!
Slight hijack here- I too am interested in Prismacolor markers. I didn't see them at my Michael's either. But I have a question. Do they match SU colors well? Do you buy them individually or in sets? If so, what's the best set to buy?
Here's your answer: Dick Blick's. I ordered Prisma markers for my mom for Mom's Day (I know, I'm such a good daughter!), and I got her 24 for less than $48. I think the markers were on sale for $1.90 each at the time. I even ordered a case to keep them in for something like 3.99 from them. Cheap! You can occasionally find them at Mike's, but not a huge selection.
I LOVE my Prisma markers. I've been using them since last year, and they are fab. COPICS were too expensive, and really, am I going to refill them and change the nibs? Don't think so! My artist friend (Beth at The Saltbox Studio) tells me that all commercial artists use Prisma markers and Prismacolor pencils...folks like Mary Engelbreit, etc. She also told me she's had some markers for YEARS and never had to replace them.
I totally would go with Dick Blick online or BLICK art supply actual stores if you have any near you. I just bought a lot of colors individually. I love both pens or should I say markers for different reasons.
I bought my Prisma color markers a while back, and I found them the cheapest at carpediemstore.com
I wanted to get the complete set of 156, and found they had the best price.
They are less than $2.00 at Carpe Diem.
Hope that helps.
THanks ladies! I will check out both DB and CP - I went to Staples today (already been to 2 Michales - no luck, no prismas there) and they didn't have any either - ugh! It's frustrating, I want them like NOW, lol!
It sure does help, thank you so much, going to google them both now to take a look-see!
If you are looking at Michaels, make sure you are looking in the artist supply section, and not the rubber stamping section. Another tip: when it comes to choosing colors, I've found that lighter tones are more versatile than dark colors because of the ability to add layers of color to shade and darken. Good luck!

What a wonderful tip about versatility - now I want them even faster so I can play, lol! And I did check the entire stores .... sadly, when I couldn't find them with the zigs and marvys, I asked and this helpful clerk took me straight to the kiddie aisle and pointed out all the CRAYOLA markers and said there you go! AHEM ............. LOLOL No such luck. I guess certain areas dont' stock what's not super popular - and I will have to go much further north to check their stores.
AC Moore in my area has open stock. I opened the cap to test one and before I got to the paper....I got a whiff of the strong scent. That is when I decided to go copic. Be sure you have opened one and made sure you can stand it before you get a whole set.....just a suggestion.
If the odor doesn't bother you......there are some fun suggestions out there using BIC Mark-it permanent markers and Sharpies....giving the same result..(or better) depending on your opinion....For a significant savings to your bank account. A set of all those markers is something like $15 plus $20. And the techniques are similar and probably good practice...

I'm a huge DickBlick fan, too. I've purchased all my Prisma Markers and Pencils there, plus if you take a minute to sign up on ebates.com, you will get 6% back on your purchase if you link to DickBlick through there.
Re Ebates: If you want to sign up and you use my link, they'll add more money to my refund account. Even if you don't want to use my link, its definitely worth signing up if you are an internet shopper, as long as you remember to go through ebates for your shopping at 100's of sites, you'll be surprised how quickly it adds up. I've gotten well over 100.00 back in the past 10 months.

My prismacolors don't smell, or at least not a strong smell. I don't notice anything with them. BTW, I also have Trias, the expensive markers, and they don't smell either. BTW, prismacolors are alcohol markers just like copics, so it would be the same smell. Solvent markers such as sharpies would have the worst smell.
The odor reminds me of spray paint. I'm okay with them for short periods of time, especially with the window open for ventilation. However, I've gotten headaches from them too.

The formulas ARE different. I have a prismacolor blender....heard it was fun to have that as an option with the copics. Supposedly it behaves differently.
Anyhoo...even that marker smells more strongly than my copics. If you don't notice it then they are definitely a good choice for you!

Dick Blick is the best place and the service is QUICK! I believe they are like $1.80 each. I just got into that kick too and now I have about 40 of them I think. I don't remember who posted it, but someone here posted a list of the Prismacolors that someone included that were like the SU colors. Maybe another one of these ladies will know/remember. If I can find itk I'll let you know.
