OK... I'm getting quite fed up with the black ink pad I have. It just leaves a lousy impression, so much so that I ALWAYS just use my versamark and black embossing powder. I notice so many of you just use black ink... no embossing powder. What do you recommend? Which company/brand has the best black ink pad?
I personally love the Versafine Black Onyx. It leaves a great impression even with stamps that have fine detail. But, even though it says that it dries instantaneous, it doesn't on SU's Whisper White. I always run the embossing gun over it first so it doesn't smear.

I recently purchased Versafine, because of all the hoopla here, but it drives me crazy because it takes FOREVER to dry (for me anyway, I use GP white). I also bought a Palette (also comes highly recommended here) and it is okay but I still have the best luck with my Memories...dries lightening fast and I can use gamsol, my Copics, whatever. So my motto...if it's not broke, don't fix it! For the most part I am sticking with my Memories! JMO!

Memories??? I have never heard of it! lol.. Is there a link and were would you buy it???
I have both, the Memories black, and the Versafine Onyx.
I like the Versafine for clear acrylic stamps, which I use a lot. So I've gotten in the habit of using it with rubber, too.
But the Memories black is great ink and works well with rubber. You can usually find it at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. The pad I have is packaged in white and says "Memories Dye Inkpad - Black" in black letters.
On the back it says: "Memories Premium Dye inkpads are the best quick-dry choice for stamping on glossy or coated papers and regular paper surfaces. Acid free, archival, and fade resistant. Waterproof for watercolors and markers. Dries permanently and quickly on most papers."

Memories and Staz-On are the best. I have had little luck with my SU. My memories is so old - I don't have a clue where Ibought it. I know I re-ink often.
Stazon is great... but for everyday stamping, I LOVE Palette Noir... you can watercolor with it without bleeding...love it! I used to love SU black but now use palette noir almost exclusively

They have free shipping over $10, but strangely, they charge tax, even if you are not in their state. (I paid 62 cents tax on an $11 purchase - BUT no shipping charges!)
Thanks for all your replies. I'll definately pick up a Black Stazon, and I'll see if I can find the Pallete hybrid (don't think I've seen it in stores before). The other ones I'll look for too. Can never have too much black. And thanks for the links. Off I go to spend some money!
I don't know what's wrong with me (or my ink pad), but I don't like the way Basic Black's been working recently. If I stamp something in it and then wait 30 seconds to clean it, it stains my stamps. I tried to use it with some clear stamps and it stained them HORRIBLY. Not to mention the smearing when I was coloring - with prisma pencils or regular SU! markers.
So I saw Versafine Onyx and tried it and it worked great, but it smeared on SU WW - too slick of a paper. SO I switched over to GP white and I haven't had any problems... the paper sucks the ink in so fast. I can color with no problems and it cleans up really well - wet paper towel and done!
India Black Ink - $5.25
India Ink Black is a specially designed, deep black, super-quick-drying dye ink formula for use with watercolors, markers, art rubber stamping, scrapbooking and much more. Non-smearing, acid free, archival and fade resistant - India Ink Black is the fastest drying black dye ink on the market for all porous and non-porous surfaces.
Reinker - $2.99
It's just an awesome, true black. Dries fast and watercolors with no smearing or fading. I love SU inks except Basic Black - it just always looks purple.

I quit using my SU black. The image wasn't crisp and the color wasn't a true black unless I just reinked. I bought a Memories Black ink pad and love it. The image is very crisp and clear and a true black.
I personally love the Versafine Black Onyx. It leaves a great impression even with stamps that have fine detail. But, even though it says that it dries instantaneous, it doesn't on SU's Whisper White. I always run the embossing gun over it first so it doesn't smear.

another vote from my for versafine onyx black. I find that it does dry fast. I don't use SU CS and have had no trouble with smearing.

I use Ranger Archival Jet Black. It dries very fast and is great for watercoloring. I just picked up the large size pad at Michaels today to use for my larger stamps.
Even though it is not really black (more of a dark grey), I also really like ColorBox Fluid Chalk - Charcoal. It also dries pretty fast and works well for watercoloring.
But the Memories black is great ink and works well with rubber. You can usually find it at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. The pad I have is packaged in white and says "Memories Dye Inkpad - Black" in black letters.

I don't know about Mikes in the US, but in Canada (at least at my Mikes), Mikes doesn't carry Memories inkpads at all. I think I can get them from my LSS, though. I'm still trying to find the Palette Hybrid Noir pad locally before I resort to an online source.
You can get the large Ranger Archival inkpad at Mikes, though.
I use different blacks for what I am doing. I like the Brilliance and chalk blacks for when I emboss them. I like the Staz-on for when I want a true black. I also use my Palette black for a nice black. I do have SU black when I want to ink a larger stamp. My DH cannot see the need for more that 1 black ink pad but I tell him unless he starts stamping with me, He will never see the need for anything related to stamping!
I use India Ink. IMHO that is the best-est around. I've tried Memories and it stains the rubber so I never tried StazOn for fear of the same. But my India Ink does not stain. It dries quick and it's GREAT for water color. I do beleive that it is also from Superior.

Okay..so I checked out the web site w/ the FREE shipping w/ $10 purchase. I'm a little confused on the Memories Ink pads it says Heat-set for faster drying..yadda yadda etc.. then goes on explains a little more about the pad and AGAIN mentions HEAT SET FOR FASTER DRYING, Or is that a standard with most ink pads to saye that???
So does this not dry faster the Palette Ink or Versafine or Staz-on????

The Memories Dye Inkpad should dry just as quickly as the Palette Ink. I only have Memories Dye and Palette; I don't have Versafine or Staz-on, so I don't know their drying time.
I don't have any of the Memories Pigment inkpads, but I'm guessing that those would take longer to dry. All my pigment ink pads take longer to dry than dye inkpads.
I haven't tried any Memories Chalk inpads yet either, so I don't really know anything about those.
Also, this is the first time I've paid attention the fine print on inkpads  , so I don't know if it is standard to say "heat set for faster drying".

My M's didn't have the memories dye ink pad.. I'm curious to check it out. Thank you so much for getting back to me..
I use India Ink Black from Superior. (www.stewartsuperior.com)
Dries fast, goes on nicely, won't smear for watercoloring and seems to be a bit easier to clean up from my stamps than Staz On.
I really like the Ranger Archival Black. It doesn't run when you watercolor. I think it cleans up easier than SU black. The image is always sharp and even. I like Stazon for surfaces that need that kind of ink and it cleans off easily too. I've gotten both in Michaels or ACMoore.
Verafine black is the winner.... I use it all the time and never smears. I also use it to emboss but you have to emboss pretty quickly which is fine. This is the best ink for detailed images.. I love it and can't live with it. My black stazon stinks but maybe it just need to be re-inked.. but still don't like it for paper.
