I am thinking about purchasing the sizzix texturz starter kit. Does anyone have this and do you like it or not. What are the pros/cons, thanks in advance.
I got suckered in, because there was a neat kit of Christmas plates. Then of course, you can't use them without the Texturz starter kit because they don't sell the mats separately. Grr, two coupons and three stores later, I'm using them.
I was not initially into the starter kit based on the small circles of sample image they gave on the package. Once I opened it, though, I was much more pleased.
The plates emboss well, but I'd say not quite as well as the CB folders. And I'm not really sure about the price comparison either. I forget what the pack of plates alone was. The starter kit is maybe $20? for 6 patterns, so with a 40% coupon, it was about $2 per pattern, does that sound right? I guess the price is fair, even if you won't use all of the plates. I know the pack of plates alone was less expensive.
I think if you like the CB folders, and like the patterns of the Sizzix plates, you'll be satisfied.
I LOVE mine! I bought the starter kit (and use it with my Fiskars texture plates, too) and really just think it is wonderful... The textures seem to be a little less 3D than the cuttlebug, but I like it better this way. Textures should be kinda subtle, not overbearing...
I don't think the embossing is as deep as the CB folders but it works :-)
Whew, it's not just me ;) I guess it's because it just has the silicon pad instead of the reverse impression bump.
One thing I did do with the Sizzix that I'm not sure would work with the CB folders is that I embossed a sheet of Fun Foam for a Christmas ornament project.
they are OKAY, got them with a 50% coupon soo they were not too expensive... The pro is that they are BIGGER than the cuttlebug folders, the CON is they do not emboss as deeply. HTH!
I have some from Ellison, not Sizzix. They are basically the same, except there are different patterns. I am guessing that the ones from Ellison are not available anymore. Anyway, here are a few examples in my gallery:
Thanks Connie. those are great cards, and I love the embossing on them. Thanks for the water spritzing tip. I am leaning towards getting them as soon as I get some money.
I do like the texturz folders (I was also taken in with the Christmas ones). As someone else has mentioned, they do not emboss as deeply as the CB folders but they do a decent job and I have found that when I used a thin shim (cereal box thickness) they also embossed more deeply. I have done the same thing with the Fiskars Texture plates. They have quite a variety of patterns and are bigger than the CB folders. Again, not as deep an emboss but with a shim or misting the paper it works better. You sill need the starter kit for the Fiskars texture plates.
I have them and like them, I use them with the big shot. I have used the cereal box shim (learned about that here and it does make a difference but like it fine without the shim as well. Havent used the CB folders but want to. Have fun!
Yes. You can use the Fiskars texture plates in the Big Kick. They do not make as deep an impression but you can use shims or lightly mist the paper and that will give you a deeper impression.
Ladies.......I've had my Cuttlebug and BIGkick since January of '07 and use them on a daily basis. Yes you can use your Fiskars texture/embossing plates in either machine. I have found they do not make as deep impression as the Cuttlebug or BIGkick ones do, but they do work. (Actually, I found the Fiskars snowflake one did the poorest job, no matter what pads or shims I used.)
Ellison is the Parent company of Sizzix, so therefore, any items showing Sizzix or Ellison can be used one in the same.
To emboss on Craft Foam, just warm (not burn or cook) the foam with your heat gun used for heat embossing. Then put your foam and embossing folder or texture plate through either machine. Foam must still be warm when going through machine. I've even used the sticky back foam (heat from the foam side). The embossed impression is cool and will stay once you emboss. I did find that felt didn't emboss no matter what I did.
Leather will also emboss if you heat it in the same manner. I did find that the empression is not as deep on the leather though, but still is enough and looks cool !
The Cuttlebug and BIGkick and the BigShot are amazing machines and can do so many things other than just for paper crafting.
These machines with their die cuts and embossing can be used for make items for your home even clothing.
Stamp on the die cuts you make for even more embellishment, use your pigment ink or VersaMark and heat emboss on the die cut pieces, dry emboss the die cut pieces, even use a crimper on them. I know there's more you can do, but this will get you started. Let your imagination go wild. These machines are cool !!!

For the craft foam how did you use it on the big kick. Meaning how did you put it together on the bigkick Did you use the embossing silicone pad then the clear plastic to roll it. I'd like to try that.

I just bought the texturz starter kit and I really like the patterns. I have a question, though. Do you have to have the multi-purpose platform or can you use the texturz plates with the spacer platform that comes with the machine?
