Default All you paper piercers!

What is the best way to pierce paper? I know of the SU! template and mat but I don't have one - what do you suggest?

I stole Granny Hawkins' idea and cut a piece of plastic canvas to about the size of a card front. It works great for paper piercing, as well as for marking placement for brads & eyelets.

You can use your sewing machine without thread. You can get a cheap SHARK at Target for 20.00.

You can also use embroidery mats. At least I think that' s what they're called (sewing isn't my thing). These come in all shapes and sizes, like hearts and circles in addition to circles and squares. They're also very cheap -- around
$.50 for a smaller one; $.99 for the larger ones. I also bought a foam mat that is supposed to be used for stamping, but I use it for piercing. I like SU's mat pack, but the mat is too small for some things. HTH!

Oh thank you. I was just wondering this same thing. Where can you find embroidery mats? I already have the mat and the piercing tool but not that guide.

GinaK has a tutorial on her blog...brb and I will find it. You can also use that plastic canvas that is used for crafts (you know the ones to make plastic tissue boxes, etc.). Let me see if I can find the link...

Great link! I would never have thought to use canvas templates. That's cool. I personally love my mat pack from SU! and I use a push pin for the piercing.

tim holtz has a ruler with holes in an even line on it for paper piercing. I use my compass ( the thingy that is made for drawing circles) or a needle. the ruler is great though!

I use plastic canvas and those jumbo push pins. I took a large piece of craft foam and cut it in 3 pieces and use that for my mat.

A computer mouse pad can be used as piercing pad too. It is quite a bit softer than the traditional piercing pad but does work.

You can find these at your local craft store with the embroidery threads. Walmart may even carry them, but I've never checked. I use a circle one a LOT.

I like both my SU Mat Pack and my Tim Holtz Ruler. It's nice to have the ruler because you have the whole 12 inch length of the ruler so I don't have to move it multiple times to get all the holes I need (like I have to do with the SU Mat Pack).

For the mat, I LOVE my new Bazzill In Stitchz piercing mat. It's also like 12 inches long and about 5 or 6 inches wide. It provides a nice, large work surface for piercing and again does not require me to move my mat when working. I got mine at Archiver's for $8.

For the piercing tool, I like the Tonic/Tim Holtz Retractable Craft Pick. You can adjust the amount of the piercing part that sticks out and it's fully retractable so your fingers are safe when you're not using it. I can't count how many times I've poked my fingers with my other piercing tool that I stored in a ziploc bag with my SU mat pack. : )

If you have Microsoft Word, you can use the draw menu to choose an autoshape any size, then choose the format...autoshape menu. Choose a dashed line of dots. The larger you set the line width, the farther apart the dots will be, so it is pretty easy to get what you want. Print it on Vellum and use it as a pattern. Keep the pattern for future use. Just a thought. Hope it helps someone. I just thought of this in response to your question, but I want an oval pattern for use with nestabilities and I think this is my answer!!! Thanks.

If you are interested in piercing not just lines, but designs, American Traditional Designs (ATD) makes brass and stainless piercing templates that are VERY cool...

search for Ornare piercing templates...they have very awesome designs that look so beautiful when you pierce them on cards...I have gotten several and been very happy. I think Ellen Hutson has them in her store.
Blessings.

I've just been using a piece of counted cross-stitch fabric -- Using every other hole instead of every hole. And a push-pin. I'm low-tech, and it's what I had around

This is what I do. but i do use a paper piercer tool. I just bought a round cross stitch fabric at mikes for 34 cents. It has perfect circles. I use my marker to indicate where to pierce.

Carla Prediger has paper templates. I bought a set a long time ago (the one with the large butterfly) at my LSS. I save her original and make copies to use with the needle.

Dandee Images has dozens of Ornare templates.

Agree with the use of the old computer mouse pads. I also bought a pile of doll makers needles *** they are very long, to use as piercers for when I'm teaching as i can't afford 10 piercing tools! So thats my hint of the day. But thanks for the heads up on the plastic canvas and the use of WORD software to do templates, will get some today in town!!!

I don't know. You could always print it on paper, pierce it through vellum to get the pattern. I haven't tried this yet myself, except in Word on the screen. I am having trouble with my computer and can't print until I change my "C" drive. Oh NO!!!

Smile alternatives for piercing

I made my own mat by gluing a piece of foam board to a piece of cardboard. It works great! I made 25 pierced Christmas cards a couple of years ago using it and you would never know the mat had been used. Not only did it work well but it was cheap!

hi everyone
i dont know if anyone posted this yet but i bought a 3pk steel tip dart set at walmart for $1.96 and shared it with friends. this is awesome because it has a nice grip if you are doing alot of piercing. darts are in the sporting goods. i also bought a pack of each of the precut shapes of plastic canvas in the craft department and shared them with friends. this is an awesome way to get a nice circle or star or whatever shape you have. and you have a nice assortment of sizes.

thanks for the tip about the plastic canvas... just might need to make my way to the mart tomorrow!

I use the plastic craft piece and a thin small mouse pad or that black foam piece that came in a pack of my clear unmounted rubber stamps. I got a MM piercer at Michaels for a couple of bucks and love it.

I got a pack of 12 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of the craft pieces at Marc's for something like 43 cents.
