Question About Cricut...

I got a Cricut machine for Christmas. I'm excited, but bummed all at once. I was reading thru the book and it says that you have to replace the mat about every 25-40 cuts. I could do that in one afternoon....:p

And the paper curls when you pull it off the mat. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments that might help a Cricut begginer???

The paper curls less when the mat is a bit *older* and slightly less sticky. Also, cardstock curls less than paper. Really the curl isn't usually a problem. As for the mats, you can turn it around so you're starting cuts from the other end so you can try to wear it out evenly. I try to keep a couple of spare mats on hand and I think the estimate they give is a *worst case scenario* as my mats have been lasting longer than that. Have fun with your new Cricut -- you're gonna love it!

I just got a Cricut for Christmas too. Check out all the great info on the Cricut message board at www.cricut.com. There are many suggestions as how to extend the life of a mat. For example, they suggest spritzing the mat with SU stamping mist and scrubbing with a nylon scrubby. Once it dries, it's sticky again. There are other suggestions as well.

Hope this helps!!! Have fun playing with your new toy!!!

Last night I just used my SU mist on my mat and then wiped it off with a baby wipe. It was very sticky again!! I'm still on my first mat and I've used it quite a bit.

Good luck!

I got it off the Cricut board last week. I'm glad that it really worked!! Too bad I already bought 4 extra mats. Doesn't look like I will be needing them for a long time!

Too funny! I just posted another thread about this. I ended up taking mine back because it curled so much. I planned to use it for bulletin boards and the curling wouldn't work for me. I also hate how much paper you waste when pulling the background part and it rips. What a bummer.

I bought some repositionable spray adhesive and I have sprayed my mats three or four times and they are still good to go. Don't do this if you don't want to invalidate your warranty. I used my Cricut for a month or so to make sure it was working properly before I sprayed the mats.

Thank you all so much for the tips. I really cant wait til New Years is over and I am going to sit and play all day with it...

I wanted to turn the mat around but I was not sure I could. I noticed that on Cricut.com they had everything but the mats for sale. Or did I just overlook them?
BIG Thanks again for the tips.

Hugs,
Joani

Can you use paper in the Cricut that has a self adhesive or has been run through a xyron? Does the adhesive gum up the cutting blade?

I honestly don't know the answer to these questions, so far the spray hasn't gummed up my blade, I am still on my first one, but I would think that the Xyron would as it is much thicker adhesive than the spray.
Also, with self adhesive paper, I would think you would find it really hard to get it off the mat, but the only thing to do with these things is try, just use an old blade and make sure you have a spare!

The backing of the xyron doesn't stick to the cutting mat. But, I was able to tape down the 4 sides of the paper and then use it in the cutter. It does not gum up the blad. It worked great!
