I bought a Gemini JR. and want to make sure I don't wreck it. The sandwich they recommend for the 3D folder is thicker than the 2D recommendation. Also I'm wondering what you use to color your 3 Ds. I see alot of new coloring products that weren't around before I took a break from stamping, so I'm wondering what you do with your 3D Folders.
It certainly doesn't sound right to me that the sandwich is thicker. But if you read the thread I've linked, you'll also see that between brands there are noticeable differences in the sandwich required. Careful experimentation is called for.
I still mostly just emboss coloured card, but for colouring embossing I like gelatos or soft pencils. I've seen beautiful watercolouring.
The sandwich for the 3D folders puts the 3D folder with paper in between the magnetic shim and plastic shim and sends it through on the bottom plate. The top plate is not used which reduces the thickness.
Fom Crafter's Companion website:Base clear cutting plate > magnetic shim > embossing folder with card/paper inside > plastic shim
With the extra filling from the magnetic shim and topped off with a plastic shim, this is a sandwich that will really work to press into all of the grooves to create your embossed effect.
Hope this helps. I love my Gemini Jr!

I do as Jennifer McGuire described in her video here: https://www.jennifermcguireink.com/2...e-warping.html
Also make sure to turn and flip the plates every time you use them. They have lasted me pretty well this way.
The Jennifer video shows the taped together sandwich with the new metallic plate, but it also works fine with the old black one which is what came with my new machine. Many thanks for the link, MN !
So glad someone brought this up. I have the Big Shot Fold Away, and it is amazing how different the sandwiches are compared to the regular Big Shot due to the different plates that go with the machine. With my Cuttlebug, I had all the sandwiches for every type of die and folder out there as some very smart people made charts available. The instructions with my new machine only give instructions for the newer accessories and mostly Sizzix products---not even SU, which I have still not managed a good impression with in my machine using the 3-D folders. I love that it folds up like my Cuttlebug did, but I just don't have the resources for it as I had with the Cuttlebug. Anyone else out there that has the Fold Away that can provide a tried and true sandwich list? I'm tired of wasting cardstock. Help!
I just ran a new to me SSS 3D folder on my big shot today-for me the sandwich is tab 1, folder, 1 plate. Which I made a label of and stuck on it. They are extra thick like the SU ones. But I have also had to run with no tabs and maybe couple of cardboard shims. Some are very thick!. Spellbinders tends to be my worst ones.
The problem is imho...over time a machine' roller might shift a bit so the sandwich might change. I do feel I get a better cut/emboss in the middle than the sides for example. So I just experiment all the time.
With the 3d, I find a light water misting of the paper helps to get a better emboss.

Thanks for the info, but the Big Shot Foldaway doesn't have tabs, and has a different sandwich set up. Can't use the same ones. Guess I will just have to experiment each time. Was hoping not to have to go through that.
Yes, experimentation is needed on 3D folders for sure! My folders range in thickness from 1/8 inch thick to 1/4 inch thick. The difference is the thickness of one plate. So you could have a very wide range of sandwich recipes.
