What's the best kind of ink to use with watercolor pencils so that the inked image doesn't bleed as bad? I've been using dye ink. Am I not letting it set long enough to dry? TIA!
I had the same problem! I tried heat gun drying - that seemed to really help set the black - that is what I have seen suggested on SCS - I also changed my ink to black stazon (another suggestion). Good luck!
You have to have a permanant ink. They used to sell a specfically a water color stamp ink.
Art Institute Glitter Very Black permanent stamp pad
Pearl Ex Stamp Pads & Re-Inkers
STAZON-BLACK
This permanent black stamp pad is great for plastic, glass, metal, glossy paper and other non-porous surfaces!
I found the very best ink is Making Memories PIGMENT ink in black. I use it a lot!
DYE ink will run, think of the washing, reds bleeding color, and turning all the shirts pink..that's dye ink!
MM pigment ink stays put, then color in with almost anything, from Lyra watercolor pencils to the real deal...Winsor and Newton w/c Pans, picked up on a Koi water brush or even yum, yum, a sable brush! Now you have me going....
I love India Ink Black. Years ago I took a watercolor class and this was the stamp pad that was recommended. I use it a lot and love it. Archival black is another one that I use that is great.
You can also stamp into Versamark and then into your colored dye ink. Stamp the image and then use the clear EP and heat. Learned that yesterday on Michelle Lindorf's blog.
You can probably try any pigment ink and it will work fine. Dye inks will not set to waterproof stage and will almost always smudge when you wet it with the watercolours.
What everyone else said! Generally, dye inks are waterbased, so your watercoloring will reactivate the pigment. I use Versafine Onyx Black for watercoloring - it's a fast-drying pigment ink and wonderful for detailed images.
I use..... versafine, memento, and marvy matchables black ink pads and I have had good luck with ink pads from Stamps by Judith. I use these also as Michelle said for the watercoloring and especially Prisma/gamsol methods. I use these also with my SU watercolor crayons and they are great. They work really well with Copics and that's usually a tricky one to not have issues with. ~~ Carol
