Default Trouble with Composition Books

I've just started making covered composition notebooks, and I'm having a problem! The SU paper is so thick and heavy that it takes on a kind of cracked look when I fold it along the edges and the binding. Does anyone have any suggestions? I know I can use another brand of paper, but I'd rather not!

Thanks.

Default Composition Book

I altered a comp book a couple of years ago at a woman's retreat and what the project designer did was cut the main cover paper to fit the front and the back individually and then used a separate piece of paper/cs to cover the binding. It turned out great and when it's opened and closed the paper doesn't get all creased.

I don't usually cover the binding, but the above post sounds like a really good suggestion!

The paper and stamps I was using lent themselves well to a slightly shabby chic look, so I wet and crumpled a strip of cardstock, bent it over the spine, then removed it and let it dry. It held its curved shape, and then I just glued it down.

When we made one at a stamp camp last year we crumbled the paper for the binder and then pulled the paper apart so you wound up with 1/2 of the thickness. It looked similar to leather and was much more pliable to put on the binding. The paper that went on the front and back outside and inside was cut to size so it did not fold over at all. Hope this helps.

I just had a kids class where we altered composition books. What I did was paint the binding with a corresponding MM paint color and a sponge brush. It covered the black bindging great too. Then we cut the cover and back in two separate pieces and used a corner rounder for the outer corners. They came out great.

i don't cover the binding at all for just that reason...
but the shabby thing sounds interesting.
my daughter loves these for sharing journals with her friends and school.
she got alot of compliments on the set i made with a matching folder for lit/com.

Thumbs up book making

Hi I will suggest only to use thinner paper for the making of your compo books, it's more workable. use some good glue too.

I made a bunch of these for Christmas gifts. I used pattern paper from a stack called Everyday Tango from Hobby Lobby. Lots of beautiful prints in it.

I didn't cover the binding, just left it as it. I used a foam craft brush and Mod Podge, and applied it to the book cover, not the paper, and smoothed it with my hands. They turned out really well.

Here is a modest example:

I use separate pieces for the covers, inside covers and bindings and I haven't had any problems. I have two in my gallery...here's the link if you'd like to check them out.

Your journals are beautiful, buggainok and Oceangirl! I put both of them in my favorites!

I came up with another possible solution to the binding problem. I used paper that had "crinkliness" as part of it's design. Here's a sample:

I use seperate pieces of paper to cpver front, back, & inside the front & back. Also, I use CS that I've put through the crimped to cover the binding. Put really strong pink tape down on outside edge of CS over binding, sprinkle embossing powder on it, and emboss it. Voila!!

Default Trouble with composition book

When I cover a composition book, I use thin 12x12 paper for the spine. I have found that the scrapbooking paper is too thick for the spine. So I just use the scrapbooking paper for the front and back of the notebook and decorate it. Good luck!

I've used material that looks like leather to cover the binding and adhere it on with red sticky tape.
