Hi - all these gorgeous tiles made me want to jump in and try. So I did my first attempts tonight (ruined a few tiles and for whatever reason the Stazon doesn't come off even with Stazon remover) - no problem. I used that for my basic image and then used SU's pens to color in some or sharpies (I wasn't quite happy with the SHARP color of the sharpies).

Anyhow - I baked them for 20 mins at 250 and let them set to cool for several hours. I tried spraying one tile with an Acryllic Gloss Sealant -guess I was TOO close to the tile when I sprayed - as things BLED. I blotted it and went back over the stazon with the black sharpie (it was only the stazon that seemed to bleed).

I so want to do these but not sure what went wrong. If I don't seal them, will they be ok - not bleed or whatever if/when condensation happens?

Time to get more tiles and start again.

I had this happen already. If you spray a light coat about 12 inches away and then let that dry and then spray again it should eliminate the bleeding. Alot of tiles get ruined at first attempts. Don;t let that stop you. I my self ruined some as well. Good luck!!

Red face Stamping on tumbled tile (coasters, etc.)

About a year ago I made a set of 4 coasters at a class. We used StazOn for stamping the image; SU craft ink pads & water color brushes for the colors. We did bake them afterward, the heat sets the colors & helps keep them from fading or bleeding later. After the tiles cooled we then finished them with a clear coat sealant (just sprayed lightly). That made the colors really pop! Word of caution though...spray LIGHTLY, if you spray too heavily or too close the colors will run.

I've been using them ever since. The colors haven't run or faded. They look just as good today as they did a year ago.

P.S. I scanned them & tried to post a picture of them but I didn't have the correct size file to be able to upload. I could probably e-mail a picture of them upon request if that's allowed through this forum.

Cool Cork sheeting

Oops! I forgot to mention...I found cork sheeting for the bottoms at a Dollar Store. There were 4 sheets in the package, each was about 8"x10" big. I used craft glue to adhere them, but someone else said to use rubber cement. I think that would probably work better.

I bought my tiles from Lowe's, 9 for $6 or so. I also bought cork backings from Ikea that fit perfectly on the bottoms and they were really cheap - can't remember how much - but they were under $2 for 12. I made my coasters over a year ago and have been using them daily since. I actually used Staz-On black for the words and the butterfly and colored the butterfly with SU pens and Dove blender pen and then used Krylon Fixatif in and then a sealent. With the humidity we've experienced here has not touched the coasters as the drinks drip. Here is the link to my sample in my gallery: Butterfly Coasters by ShariW at Splitcoaststampers. Planning on making some more for CHRISTmas this year using my SU markers to color them.

When I have used Mod Podge on other projects, water seems to soften it and eventually turn it white. Have any of you actually put ice cold glasses on the finished tiles to see how moisture affects the mod podge? --or the acrylic sealer?

Default Tile Magnets

I know these are not coasters, but I thought they would be another great use for tile. I bought the 2x2 tiles that come in a sheet with the webbing on the back. I think they were about $10 and you get 36 of them. I then peeled them off the backing and used the All In the Family set to make personalized tiles for everyone in my family. My 2 1/2 year old daughter loves to play with them on the fridge and uses hers to hang the painting she did. Anyway, just thought I would share. I stamped them with Stazon and colored them in with watercolor pencils and a blender pen. Baked them at 350 for 25 minutes and after they cooled, sprayed with Krylon. I used Crystal Effects to adhere the magnet on the back. I used a 1" ceramic disk magnet and it works great and actually is strong enough to hold the tile and whatever you want to stay on the fridge. I hate it when you buy a magnet and it won't even hold a sheet of paper.

I did have a question regarding using craft ink on tiles. What are you using to apply the craft ink?

I didn't read every reply, so if I duplicated someone sorry.

I use stazon ink. If I am going to color in the image I use sharpie markers. I never have baked or sprayed them with anything to seal. They have never had a problem as long as you don't use nail polish remover on them, that will make it bleed. (lots of experiements!)

For the backing I go to the drawer liner section of Lowes and back the self adhesive cork that comes in a roll. I believe that you can get 40 tiles backed with this roll. It sells for less than $10. I usually buy a enough boxes of tiles at once to make 40 coasters and then one roll of backing.

Here are the instructions for making photo candles, which tell you how to print a photo onto tissue paper using your computer: Forums at Splitcoaststampers

If you get a weird pop-up box, just "x" it out and proceed.

Then use this tutorial in Resources to tell you how to put the photo onto the tiles: Tutorials at Splitcoaststampers

Hope that helps!

Default Tile Coasters

Hi Everyone,

This is my first reply, so I hope this finds you all well. I am very excited about making the coasters, in fact I made a set last night that turned out "ok". I've got to work on my pressure, as my images seemed to run together a bit. Has anyone used SU markers/inks for coloring instead of StazOn and Sharpies-just baked and not put a sealer on? If so, how do those hold up with regards to smearing? I agree that if you seal them, you lose the absorbancy.

Thanks, and Happy Stamping!

Neither Rialto tiles or the tumbled marble tiles are truly absorbant. (If anyone has found a tile that truly absorbs like the commercial coasters, please share brand name and source with us!) Water still beads up on the unsealed tiles, so sealing is not an issue with me. But if you don't seal, water and a very small amount of pressure will remove and/or smear the design.

I have not tried the craft inks, because I was told that craft (pigment) inks would not dry on a non-porous surface without heat embossing. I don't know if drying them with a heat gun or baking them would make them dry/permanent. Maybe someone else has tried using craft/pigment ink on tiles. Hope someone will comment.

Default Copic Markers on Tiles?

Since Stazon is a solvent ink, I was wondering if you could use Copic markers (also a solvent type ink) to color images?

OK, here's another thought: Has anyone tried alcohol ink or re-inkers to color in images on tile coasters? I'm thinking of experimenting with Adirondack alcohol inks....

Do you have any way to upload a picture of some of your tiles so that we could analyze it? I have had good luck with the Stazon black for the outline, and then craft ink for the coloring inside. (You can also use dye ink if you seal it) I bake them at 250 for about 15-20 minutes. This does not seal them, however. You do have to spray on a sealer. I prefer a clear acrylic matte sealer. Since neither Rialto (Lowes) or the tumbled tiles will absorb water, even in their natural state, I don't mind sealing the surface and this is the only way that I have found that the surface won't rub off. Oh, there is one other way. If you use the craft ink for all stamping, you can dust on Glassy Glaze, heat in oven for 15 minutes, and the embossing powder will seal image. However, these cannot be used as a hot plate tile because of the embossing powder.

I have not tried my craft ink pads yet...I was using sharpies and the tumbled tiles..I will try the Rialto ones. I do not have my camera...My husband took it with him to alabama for 2 months. I will see if I can borrow my parents and take some pics of them to let you see. I have been doing the dominoes and they work great...however they won't be getting wet so I know that its ok! I just worry about the tiles getting wet from drinks. I just feel like they look very messy and sloppy on the tumbled tiles...they look nothing like the ones in the gallery. I will try and post them soon.
Thanks for the info

What's the difference between baking and sealing? I would like the color of my tiles to be sealed, and I also DO NOT want the tile to absorb condensation. Do I just need a sealer for this? Does the kind of sealer make a difference on how the tile is protected?
Also, I've seen some of you color the tiles differently; does the coloring method depend on the type of tile used, or is it personal preference?
Thank you!!

just got through reading this thread...i have also been making tiles. my sil and i have a craft fair coming up next weekend. I have used stazon ink, and for coloring i have used sharpie markers. I also have used the ranger alcohol inks. I tried using other inks, but even after baking them in the oven i found that the color would smudge off, ykwim? For the backing I used a self adhesive cork liner that I first found at the container store, and then saw the same thing at home depot for $1 less. hope this helps answer some of the questions.
I have plenty of samples of tiles in my gallery if anyone would like to take a peek.

I have used the small tiles at Home Depot; they come 9 to a box, I think. I stamp on them with Stazon then colour with chalk and a blender pen, or stamp with pigment ink (SU! Craft pads). I don't bake mine, but I do spray them with a sealer. Then I use little adhesive felt circles on the bottom. They're the ones you can buy to put on the legs of your furniture so they don't scratch the floor.

Ditto Lorraine. I prefer to use spray fixatives because I don't want to use my oven for anything that could possibly be toxic. Having said that, many people are allergic to the sprays. I made my coasters way over a year ago and we use them every day and I used a fixative between layers of coloring and then sprayed a sealer. They still soak up the excess moisture from our cold drinks. There are so many great ideas on this thread, you just need to use the one that suits your style and comfort.

Maybe the tiles I got from HD were different....they were the tumbled ones. I stamped an image in Black Stazon and I didn't press hard enough for the image to look good. Oh well....I thought....I just clean it off with StazOn cleaner.....NOT!! I even tried Ultra Clean.....NOPE!!

I DID however, color my tiles with colored pencil. The color sinks into the tile and the wax seals it. I heated it with my heat gun just to see if the wax would melt when something hot was put on it. NOPE! I didn't even bother to seal it.

I use the tumbled tiles (without any finish) from Lowes, stamp with StazOn and color with Sharpies and Fabrico markers. I like the Fabrico markers best because (more delicate, shadeable color IMO) but you can't beat Sharpies for price/variety. I dont' use a finish, but I do heatset them in my oven. Never have a problem with running.
