Here are some directions that I found.
I have used stazon to stamp the image and then colored with chalk. I did not bake, but did spray with protective coating.

I use the rialto tiles for .32 at Lowes. I use stazon to stamp, color with sharpies, bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes and spray with Krylon matte sealer. I have never had a complaint. Coasters are sooooo fun! I hope that helps! I didn't look at the directions given though. I am sure they are great. I just don't use the tumbled tiles. The rialto ones have a finish on them. Good luck!

This is PERFECT. Just what I needed. Thank you so much.

My daughter has an anniversary coming up and I know she would love a set.

Thank you for sharing this. I have never seen the process with Rialto tiles, but I have a Lowes two minutes from my house and I'm going out first thing tomorrow and giving this a try--just happened to have a new pack of colored sharpies.

I bought a box of 9 (4x4) tumbled stone tiles from Lowes earlier this week. I stamped them with stazon ink & baked them at 350* for 25 minutes. I did not spray a coating on them as I wanted them to absorb the condensation.

I also use those little felt circles that are self-adhesives--for furniture drawers and backs of pictures, etc--you can also get them at Lowe's when you get the tiles. I just stick them on the back and presto! coaster done.

I've been wanting to try the tumbled tiles for so long! Thanks, Janice, for asking this question. I'm sure there are a lot of stampers out there wondering the same thing.

What does baking them do? Is it necessaey? Can you use any color to color the flower or picture in or does it have to be stazon?

Default Tiles

I have done coasters using 4x4 tiles from Home Depot. I've then stamped my image on paper, coloured it and then when you know it's dry, I've hodge podged it onto the tile. I usually put at least 3 coats on. The surface can then be cleaned using a damp cloth.
I cover the bottom of the tile with felt.
I've also used the staz on ink, and then hodge podged the top as well!

I LOVE making these tiles/coasters! They are so easy and look great when done. I made a couple sets for my Mother to donate to the "Hope Lodge" in Buffalo, NY.

I printed quotes out on tissue paper then decorated with stamps and colored pencils. Colors turned out pretty good, even after Mod Podge and sealer.
Have fun creating.

Default Tumble tile coasters

Hello wysegirl,

I thought your coasters were wonderful and most beautiful.
I do have a question regarding the tumble tiles.

I have also worked with the tumble tiles for coasters but had a
problem with crumbling corners, etc. Their very fragile to work with.
Did you have any problems with the tumble tiles  If so, what did
you do to overcome the fragility of them.

I also noticed it added to their uniqness (sp?). Thank for any tips you
might have on this........

Modge Podge and sealer? Is all that necessary? What if I don't want to seal mine so the coasters soak the condensation?

JKinAK,
Not sure if I really NEED to have Mod Podge and the sealer, but I like the way they look with the shiny sealer. Haven't tried any with only the MP. Never really thought about the condensation!! :-) From entry #12 above, she says she only uses MP, I'll bet it would work without the sealer.

Can you just doodle or write on the coasters with the Sharpies - do you have to stamp an image with Stazon?

I'd like to do this with my womens ministry group - but have reservations about using the Stazon and my personal stamps with a large group of ladies who aren't experienced with Stazon and stamps.

Smile Tile trivets

Several years ago I taught a tile coaster class. In addition to the costers we made a trivet using a larger tile decorated to match the coasters. A piece of masonite and some quarter round moulding. I made frames for the tile to sit in. They made Great Trivets .The class was a huge success.

Default Tile coasters - coloring with Sharpies

I have stamped the image with StazOn and then lightly dampened the tile. I begin the coloring with a sharpie and immediately rub off the color with a baby wipe for a watercolor effect. Continue to layer the color and wipe off and it works great. I'll download an image tomorrow. I haven't baked them, but would be a great idea. Being from the south, the absorbent coaster is a must!

Good luck!

Default coasters

Thanks for all the ideas and techniques how to make your coasters.
I live in Bali and there are no tumbled tiles available. Can I use the ordinary tiles which you use on the bathroom walls (smaller size)?

I think so. The tiles we have here come in 4 X 4 size, also 2 X 2. What you want is a "rough" surface -- not a slick ceramic surface.

My local Lowe's and Home Depot didn't know the term "tumbled tiles" but they did know unglazed tiles. I found them with the glazed tiles. I stamp the unglazed tiles with Staz On, colored them with chalk and just sprayed them lightly with a fixative. I put a plant on one a year ago and it still looks good. They are absorbant.

I too have had great success making the tumbled tile coasters. At the nursing home where I help my crafty ladies to make things, they had no trouble stamping the stayzon image then chalking them. We used a crackle stamp alot at the corners after stamping off first to give it a lighter effect and aged. I did not bake these but sprayed them with a sealer and have used mine everyday with great moisture absorbtion, so I never saw the need to bake. The cork sheets are at Hobby Lobby in 12" sheets, so you can get 12 out of a sheet at 3'' squares. Good luck and have fun!!

I have made tons of tumbled tiles, i have used the tumbled tiles from home depot and the nicer tiles from lowes. I know the last few times i have tried to get the tumbled tiles at home depot, they have had way to many holes and flaws. I used staz on or ranger ink for non porous surfaces(before staz on came out) Colored with chalk or colored pencils. I have never sealed them, and i have never had any complaints that they faded or anything. I like to look of them plain. I have also stamped on the shiny bathroom type tiles with staz on and given them on a stand with a dry erase marker. Didn't color the image on these as i didn't want to have them so dark as they would be using sharpies. kim

Ladies, I have used the various methods you have described (about a year ago) and have had numerous problems coloring the tiles and then using them, after a while. I made a bunch of tile coasters using the Rialto white, beige, and even terracotta color. I used Stazon black alone on the terracotta color ones and they looked great, no sealer. I also used chalk to color or colored pencils and sprayed with Krylon matte sealer. They looked great, but the terracotta ones have faded out (with lots of use) and on the sealed ones, the sealer (3 coats) eventually peeled off, taking the StazOn ink and the coloring with it! I gave some as gifts and even sold several sets. Yikes! No complaints on those, but I have had problems and worry about giving or selling any more...

When I tried using Sharpies to color the images, the solvent in the Sharpies caused the StazOn ink to smear! I then tried baking the tiles both before and after coloring them, and the baking seemed to dull the colors of the Sharpies. I didn't see how the chalk or pencils would survive the sweating of the glass without being sealed, but then I had the problem with the surface peeling. Of course with the sealant on them, they did not absorb water, and the water just sat on top, which is probably what caused the sealant to fail.

Everyone seems to report such success, and I have had so many problems. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong??? These make such neat gifts and my stamp club wants to make them, but I'm reluctant to teach it when I've had bad results! Help, please!

Default ink question

Could someone please tell me which inks do and do not work with tiles. I know Stazon does, but I only have 2 colors of Stazon (black and brown, which is almost black!) - can I use pigment inks like Versacolor cubes, or Brilliance, or Adirondack dye inks? I have the tumbled tiles for coasters all ready to go. I will probably color the stamped images with chalks and/or watercolor crayons and then bake and seal with fixative.
Thanks.

Hi Tilly! Besides Stazon, I've also used Brilliance and Fabrico. The Brilliance ink shimmer is really gorgeous on the tumbled tiles. Here's one I did with Brilliance and Fabrico:

Brilliance Tile by labullard at Splitcoaststampers

Fluid chalk inks work well too. Here's a tumbled tile coaster set by StamperSharon:

Hope that helps!

Hi Ladies,

I have been waiting to try this technique for a long time, today I tried stamping on the tumbled tile and ruined 4 tiles trying to get the full image to print on it, everybody else's look so wonderful, does anybody have any tips?
Thanks in advance.

NHQueen,

I'll bet they're not ruined. Just take StazOn Cleaner and wipe off your botched image, then wipe the cleaner off completely and let dry before you try inking up and stamping again. I've done that numerous times before I've gotten a good clean, complete image on the tiles. I don't have any other advice for you, though, because, as I wrote in my previous post, the problems I have had are in the image wearing off or peeling off after repeated use from condensation from the cold drinks sitting on the coaster. ~Luralyn

I found a beautiful set of stamped tiles in the gallery and she did the coolest thing...used tape around the edges of the tile (similar to masking) and just sprayed a sealant over the colored image. This way the edges are still absorbant but the color is sealed so it doesn't come off!!! AWESOME!

When I made my tiles I just stamped small images in a random pattern and some did'nt cover perfectly. I used a crackle effect stamp to hide those spots that I was not happy with. My tiles were also tumbled but fairly smooth. I did seal the with a clear acrilic sealer spray and so far (6mo.) they are still absorbing well and not smearing.
