I don't think that people are taking the flags off, I think that they're first wrapping the paper around the mailbox and marking where the flag is with their thumbnail, and then using the 1/2 circle punch to cut a hole where the mark is and then cutting a straight line from the edge of the paper into the circle.
I cut the paper. I have one with a broken flag, I do not think it would be easy to get the flag back on if you take it off. I am going to make a paper flag for the broken one.

This is exactly how we did ours for our card club this month.
Yep, that's the way I did it...I wouldn't recommend removing the flag... and I even used my Cropadile to punch a hole in the flag so I could put in a brad with a flower like I saw here on SCS. No need to drill a hole!
I should have checked here first .... I took my flag off!!!! I think I found a remedy, though, so I thought I'd share. I used an oversized brad. I will likely have to keep tightening it but don't really think I will use the flag that often! It seems to be working I won't be taking off any other flags but in case you make my mistake heres a quick fix!
He he oh that has made me laugh bless you, my husband asked can you take the flag off and I said No it is rivetted, so managed to do what others had mentioned about feeling where the rivet was and then punching a hole in it and cutting from edge to hole, mind you I did fudge the first piece up as I made the whole too small!!! doh
Glad you found an alternative - have you posted a piccie yet?
LOL - this is a great thread for me - I was going to do the mailboxes for my kids teachers for Valentine's day and after spending way more time than I wanted to trying to get around the first flag I scrapped the idea and switched to nugget boxes. I do have a 1/2 inch circle punch in my next SU order though, so maybe we'll try again once that arrives!

I did mine like everyone else..used the 1/2in circle punch and cut a line across. I used ribbon on both ends around the edge of the box to cover up the edges. It really went fast...I made three boxes in about an hour and a half. They do look cute!
I just finished all of mine for Valentines Day. I didn't use a punch, I covered from the flag to the back of the mailbox in paper.... ribbon on the front (white or red part of the mailbox). I hope that makes sense.

Does anyone have any extra of these mailboxes? I can't find any at our Target. I am always too late for these neat items...... I would be willing to buy some if you have any extra!
