Default Stamping with two different colors

I am a real newbie to stamping. I was just looking at some ideas in the gallery and was wondering how do you get 2 colors stamped on one stamp. For example on a flower stamp how do you get the flowers one color and the leaves another?

You color on the stamp with different colored markers. After coloring, "huff" on the stamp (to moisten it with your breath), then stamp. Very simple to do!

They have to be washable markers correct? or else they would stain your stamp?

Any water based ink marker will work--SU, Tombow. You are right not to use a permanent marker.

I see you got excellent answers to your question. It is a great way to get multiple colors on a single stamp.

I noticed you live in NY and wanted to share a link to a thread where a bunch of talented and fun ladies chat. Most of them live in Central NY (I don't ... but stamping with them is well worth the 4 hours it takes me to drive to that area!). They get together fairly often ... sometimes organized as Get-It-Together events posted on SCS (see my siggy for one in March in Rotterdam) and sometimes more casually at each others' homes.

Forums at Splitcoaststampers

Most of what I learned came from stamping with other people!

There are other ways too!

I did this card by inking the stamp in green then using a Q-tip to take the green ink off the flower areas. I squashed the lid of the plum down into the pad to get a little pool of ink and then used a paint brush to colour the flower areas.

If your stamp is not too detailed, you can sometimes ink it directly with the pads, especially if you're using the little cat's eye ones as the point is quite small and easy to direct.

You can also 'paint' H2Os on the stamp for a shimmery stamping.

I also use the stampin up, but when ever possible I mount my flower seperate from the stem and than just use the stamp-a-ma-jig to line them up.

Pick stamps that have large solid areas and paint it on thinly. Does that help?

I have H2O's but never heard of this, how do you do this? Does it stay wet or do have to spray it or what?

Thanks

Somewhere I saw a masking technique. You use wax paper or clear acetate and stamp the main image there. Then you put it beside to dry. After it dries you cut around it so it is in the image size.

After it you ink the bigger image first and clean your stamp after stamping the cardstock. Put your wax paper or acetate over the printed image and reink your stamp in the other color. Try doing it in the area you wish in another color and then re-stamp your image. Any excess of ink over the other image will go to the wax paper or acetate protecting your work.

Hope this helps.

sprtiz it with a light mist of water for a watercolor type effect.

cbet gave me some very helpful direction earlier today when I asked about using Twinkling H20s on stamps on another thread... This is what she said,

"I wish I remembered where I originally read about this, but . . . to paint on a stamp and them stamp it, the H2O's need to be thicker than you would use for regular watercoloring. I use a little spray bottle of water to spritz a little water over the surface of the colors I'll be using and let it sit a bit to soften the paint; then maybe spritz again if it needs it, then use a not-too-wet waterbrush to swirl it into paint and paint it onto the stamp. Don't worry about working too fast, and make sure you get enough on there. Once the stamp is painted, use the spray bottle to re-wet the paint (don't spray directly toward the stamp, kind of spray across it and let it mist down onto the stamp, if that makes any sense).

I'll see if I can find the place that explained this, but I've changed computers and bookmarks, so I can't promise!

ETA: found this link - I don't think it's the one I originally had, but it's a very good tutorial:

One thing to remember Newby, use the "side" of the marker, not the tip. You get better coverage that way. Have fun.
