I have read that you can stamp on tiles with Stazon and color the image in with Sharpies. If you do it this way, do you still have to use the spray sealer stuff? I want to make some magnents and coasters. Thanks so much!
O-K, I just have to reply to you. I don't know about the spray but I saw you are moving to Japan soon and you have a son named AJ. My son is 25 and in Japan and his name is AJ. It really amazes me what a small world we live in. His real name is Andrew Joseph. Any way I hope you get your answer.
Glitter Queen, the short answer is yes. I've made quite a few of these to sell and if you Krylon Fixitif spray, you hardly ever get colors that run. Also protects the domino.
Also, try using Crystal Effects over the dominoes after you have used the Krylon spray. Just give it a long time to get dry. It makes a beautiful domino and protects it. Another good thing I like about it is that if you should decide you want to do the domino over, just leave it in water and the Crystal Effects softens and comes off.
Shprete,
Thanks so much for the info! I can't wait to try this.
StampAttack,
My husband is in the Air Force, and we will be PCSing very soon to Japan. You're right, small world huh. My son's real name is Andrew Jacob. lol, pretty close to your son's name. My youngest son's name is Connor Joseph. Great minds think alike eh!
Kelli,
We are moving to Misawa. (Hope I spelled that right) I hear it is VERY cold there. I really hope it's not as cold as people say it is. I am excited to go somewhere new though. We've been here for almost 5 years now. How long have you lived there? Do you like it?
Just as an FYI, I've stamped tiles in Staz-on and colored with Sharpies and don't seal them. I wanted to ensure they would absorb moisture from glasses & cups. . . and they do!
This post is the prime example of everyone's tastes. I always seal but would never touch Krylon. I use Patricia Nimocks to seal mine. I'm the "better safe than sorry" type and I like the shine the sealer adds.
It is all about what you are using them for I think. If you are using them as coasters it actually depends on your glasses. Flat bottom glasses tend to stick to the coasters and lift them up with the glass, so be careful.
If you have an image that you'd like to color with non-Sharpie markers, like using the Stampin' Write markers, you can do that and seal just that image. Just use a sheet of paper larger than your tile, stamp your image on it and cut out. Instead of using the cut-out image, use the paper with the image "hole" in it. Place it over your tile and your stamped/colored image will show through. Then you can spray your sealer. Just thought you might like to know another option!
Are you making these as coasters? That's how I've directed my answers to you, so I hope this helps!
I have stamped with stazon then colored with sharpies and then baked for twenty minutes at 350 just for good measure...you can't SCRUB the image off!

Hello!
I have also used Sharpies to color in stamped images on tiles. I found that baking them is much easier than heat setting with the heat gun, more even heat and less work for you! Just make sure not to bake too long. I don't know exactly what will happen, but I was warned!!
Just my two cents - I lived in Japan for just under three years, mainly in Hiroshima and Okayama but travelled a lot throughout the country for work...I absolutely loved the country and people and wish I could go back to visit (I've been stateside for 2 1/2 years now). Have a great time and see as much of the country as you can - it's very diverse.

Just an FYI about Sharpies ~ they've added 5 new colors and you get get just the new colors in a package. I love sharpies and as of this morning have the complete collection. I need a sharpie support group I think!!
yep, they were the new earthy colors ~ Olive, Navy, Marigold, Plum, and Burgundy ~ I got them at WalMart this morning for $3.50. Worth it if you ask me. They had the complete set for $11, but I only needed these 5. I'm so excited. I love Sharpies!!!!
Hey Marcia,
You can get the box of 24 at Sams for under eleven dollars and it has all the colors but the metallic ones in it...3 red, 2 blue, 2 green, 2 orange, 2 yellow, 2 purple, 1 teal, 1 lime, 2 berry, 1 Aqua, 1 brown, 1 olive, 1 burgundy, 1 plum, 1 marigold, 1 navy. That is the list!
That would make sense since WalMart and Sams are basically one in the same. We don't have a Sam's near us and I wouldn't go enough to justify the membership ~ it's the there's only 2 of us thing. No need for bulk, no place to put it.
Wow! You girls are the best! Thanks so much for all this information. I can't wait until Dh gets home from work so I can head to Home Depot and Sam's!! Wooohooo!
Woohooo! I just went to Sam's (thanks for the info Kari) and got the 24 pack including the new colors for $11 and some change! Now, just have to wait until the kids go to bed tonight.
Hey Marcia....I just purchased a pkg with new colors from Staples...On sale now in NM for I think less than $8.00...Five new "Earthy"colors...olive...marigold...etc...17 in all...
I am orphaned also...I think I signed up for your group forum...
Ok, I must be doing something wrong.... I stamped on my tile with Stazon, waited about 10 minutes (the package says allow 3-5 min to dry), then I colored it with my Sharpies. BUT, as I was coloring it, the Sharpie ink was smearing the Stazon! So what am I doing wrong? The tile I bought is sort of glossy. Is that the problem? I hope not, because I like that better than the other kind. Anyway, any help you can give me is much appreciated. Thanks!
I'm not an expert by any means, but from what I've read about stamping on tiles you have to heat set the staz on with an embossing gun for about 15 seconds to 'set' the ink or they can be baked in the oven for a short time. I've just recently tried my hand at tiles and when I used the embossing gun method, the ink did not smear. Just be careful, the tiles get extremely hot. Hope this kinda helps--good luck!
Just found some yesterday at Office Max a BIG package of them with quite a few earthy colors in it. 16 in all for $9 plus there was a coupon in the paper locally for an additional $3 off. GREAT deal and I'm having fun with my 36 sheet set of 2 x 2 tiles I purchased at Home Depot for $3.15. I need to purchase another set of stamps that I really liked in the catty that will be perfect for these.
I haven't used a sealer on my tiled magnets as long as I color with sharpies. I did use my watercolor brush and painted on stamped stazon images. I found my black stazon kinda lightened up using this technique and don't really like it as much as the sharpie application. Using Sharpie markers doesn't seem to discolor the stazon as the watercolor affect did.
HTH & have FUN making your coasters and magnets.

No Need to seal if you heat set and are using just as magnets. and heat set the stazon before coloring with Sharpies and thenheat set again after coloring with Sharpies....
And Grani Jani, you will want the 2x2 for magnets they are not large enough for coasters....they come 36 to a sheet in HD or Lowes and are less than three dollars for the sheet. They are held together by bits of caulking so you have to cut them apart...hope that helps
granijani, the 2x2 tiles are for magnets (or a really small drink!!! ) The bigger ones are for coasters--I think they're 4x4. The 2x2 tiles come all hooked together with grout. There are 36 tiles per 'pad'. I got mine at Lowe's and they were around $2.40, that's only 6.5 cents per tile!!!!!!!!!

So ladies, when I go to Home Depot what kind of tiles am I looking for?
I know 2x2, but could you give me more info? These are for coasters, right?
Thanks!
Ooooppps!!! Didn't mean to repeat myself--is there an echo??!! I'm still new at this whole thing and this was my first attempt at a quote. Computer was being slow and I got impatient and hit submit twice.
JK you can delete the extra post by clicking the button at the top right of your post...next to the edit button I think it will be an option for you...if not then just let it be it happens all the time. it is not you only! LOL
Keri,
What are you doing up so late? Don't tell me Coleton is a night baby! My boys were for a while when they were infants. My DH was TDY for two weeks when Ethan and Zach were about 1 1/2 months old. Hardest two weeks of my life! I love my boys dearly, but would NEVER want to go through that again. I now know why sleep deprivation is an effective form of torture!
Help!!! I found the button next to the edit button (quote, right?) but now what? I couldn't figure it out! Let me know so I can get my embarrassing double post fixed!
No not the quote button, you need to see a delete button. If it is not there PM jbalcer with this thread link and ask her to delete your double post...or you know what I will do that for you real quick...Jenn is a peach and will take care of it for you as fast as she can!!!
Ok just pm'd Jenn....I am sure that once she is up and on the computer she will take care of it for you...and listen for real it happens all the time and is not something to be embarressed by!!! It is usually a computer hiccup that causes it or if it take too long for your post to go through and you hit submit again...not to worry. The more you read and spend time here you will see it happens to everyone~
In this forum, for whatever reason, I don't have a delete double post option. I do in other forums, but not this one.
That said ~ back to the tiles.
Yes, you can use the glossy tiles as coasters, but you will have to seal them, but not too thick or the will peal off. Glossy really is best used as decoration.
To help with the StazOn adhering, you can actually take 80 grit (really coarse) sandpaper and rough them up a little. It won't affect the color but will help the design stay better. My preference is still to go to HD, cop a squat on the floor, and sift through their unfinished tiles and find 9 perfect tiles that look white as possible. Lowe's are never as good as HD's.
