I'm going to make my niece's birthday invitations (circus theme) and I have this really cute stamp I wanted to try the scratch n sniff on. Does anyone know how I would be able to get a cotton candy smell? What is the ratio of EP and the scent?
I'm a new stamper and was unaware that you could do such a thing. Is there anyone around who can offer me steps as to how to make a scratch and sniff card or at least direct me to someone who does?
I have done this in the past, although it did not work as well as I had hoped. I purchased sugar-free koolaid and mixed it into my embossing powder, then embossed as usual. I tried spiced too, and cinnamon worked the best. The grape koolaid worked better than the other flavors. You have to use lots of the powder/spice to get it to smell.
step 1- stamp your image
step 2- decorate your image ( color in with markers if it's an open image or if it's a 2 step stamping image stamp your second stamp)
step 3- Use a versamarker to color in where you want the scent to be
step 4- Sprinkle your Scratch and sniff mixture (recipe below) over the versa marked area
Step 5- heat with the heat gun
Step 6- embellish
Scratch and Sniff mixture
Clear embossing powder 2 parts
Kool Aide (the kind in the small packet that you have to add sugar to if you are going to eat it) 1/2 part
You can also add a pinch of glitter if you want to make it sparkle a bit.
Now different flavors smell more intensly than others, I just added a little more koolaid if needed. It's trial and error really.
Blue raspberry was one of my favorites, followed by lemon ( did not smell much, but you could tell when you scratched it).
You MUST scratch it to make it smell. If you didn't it would just be the sniff technique!
oh how cute i didnt even know you could do this. my kids are going to have fun trying this. they love to stamp with me and i am always looking for things they can do this is going to be fun.
I did this with Oh So Sweet (strawberry) and mix EP with Strawberry koolaid and then I mixed some more EP with Cocoa and made the chocolate covered strawberry- It was a hit!!
Just use the Versamark pen and do only one part at a time
Just a note- it will be granular and not smooth, like the clear EP usually comes out. and then you just rub over it to make it smell
HTH!
I have tried mixing the embossing powder with kool-aid, but I didn't end up with much of the kool-aid left to scratch and sniff. I have had better luck using the heat & stick powder. You can still use the versmarker or versamark pad and then you apply the heat & stick powder. Heat until it starts to melt and then put your kool-aid powder on. Heat again to set.
I just did this in my stamp club -- they loved it! Here's the card we made using the orange from Fresh Fruits: Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
Two things that I have found work best - and both involve what kool-aid you use. First, be sure you purchase an unsweeteded kool-aid powder. If it contains artificial sweetener or sugar, it "dilutes" the smell when you mix it with the embossing powder. Straight, unsweetened kool-aid powder is what works best. I also think "cherry" has the strongest smell, lemonade and lime have the weakest smell.
Also, Kool-aid makes INVISIBLE Koolaid in several flavors - grape, cherry, and another one I can't think of right now. It is totally uncolored so when you make the Kool-aid, it just looks like clear water. This is great to use for scratch and sniff, because you can use any color craft pad and the Kool-aid powder doesn't muddy or change the color of your image like the regular Kool-aid does.
One final thing, as you use your mixture, it seems like the embossing powder sticks better to the craft ink than the Kool-aid powder does. After a while you will have used up most of the clear embossing powder, but there will be lots of Kool-aid powder left in the container. After you emboss it, the image will seem sticky - too much Kool-Aid and not enough clear emb. powder. Just add a little more embossing powder and you're set to go.
Does anyone know how to make a scratch & sniff card smell like cake icing? I have a cupcake stamp and I want to make it smell like the real thing. Any suggestions?
I have one somewhere with a coffee smell.and a stamp of caffee mocka.
but did she ever get her answer about the cotton candy smell she was looking for that sounds like a really cute card.you'll have to post it after so we can all see it.

Powdered (fruit flavored) drink mix. Here we have it in sugar free and not sugar free (where you have to add sugar when you mix it up). I believe that the artificial sweeteners in the sugar free will scorch when you emboss, which is why regular is recommended.

Ive just been googling kool aid (its been intriguing me lol) wouldn't using the pink lemonade flavor be almost the sweet smell of cotton candy?
