Default Problems coloring red roses

I have a hard time coloring roses with reds. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong as I have no problem coloring them with any other colors. I've tried using 4 shades, 3 shades, and now I'm down to 2 and I'm still having problems!
Can anyone help me with this? I'd love to hear any suggestions you might have.
Thanks in advance.

What medium are you coloring with?

I'm sorry, what a dunce I am!! I have too much of a hard time with the copics so I stick to my colored pencils. I have prismas, poly's, Caran's, Ink intense's, studio's, and some fantasia's. I use my prisma's the most though as I have all the colors, I'm still working on aquiring the other sets.

Ahhh... I love my pencils too... You should join us over in the Prismacolor thread! We love talking about pencils over there - all kinds, not just Prismas! Don't feel like you have to read all 76 pages, though - just jump in... we're nice, and we won't make fun of you if you love the way new pencils smell... ;)

Something that helps me with choosing colors is to find a photo online - here are a billion red roses to choose from...
Google images: red rose

Also, I have a "color picker" tool on my computer that was a free download, and I love it:
ColorSchemer | Free screen color picker from ColorSchemer

The tool allows me to hover over any image on my screen and 'pick' the exact color of any pixel in the image. It's a huge help for matching colors and picking out pencils.

If you have a way to post something you've colored that doesn't look quite right, I'd be happy to take a look and give you some ideas...! Hope this helps a little.

I am no artist - but instead of trying to color with shades of red, try shading the dark parts with a purple. I have one red rose that I was relatively happy with my coloring on, and the purple shading is what did the trick.

Thank you Dini for all of your ideas, I wish I'd have thought of goggling before. It's been rough (with my health/weather) but I finally got the three cards finished and uploaded. Here they are, you can see the differences.

I have some more roses to do so I will try the blacks your photos show and I will try your purple cbet to see which one I like better.

Hey Tammy:
Here is a free youtube video Suzanne Dean did on coloring with reds that may help you choose good reds and how to blend with them. They are the most difficult of the copics, actually so it is not you.

And here, darling, is Sharon Harnist's step by step (with pictures) tutorial on coloring red roses... enjoy!

Post your image when you color new roses - I bet this helps you.

Default Coloring Red Roses

Hi Tammy:
Don't know if my first message posted or not.. it just vanished. This may help with the red roses:
Here is a step by step tutorial with pics featuring Sharon Harnist coloring red roses with copics:
Guest Tutorial: Coloring and Shading Flowers by Sharon Harnist | COPICMARKER.COM
And... here is Suzanne Dean's youtube video on coloring with reds. It is not a rose but it helps to see how the reds work. Reds are difficult to work with -

Actually, after viewing Sharon's tutorial, I might go back in the the darkest areas and add some R39- if you want real contrast which is how I like to color. I am sure this will help. Post pics of your newly colored roses if you redo them... and by the way, I thought your cards looked great!
