Default Prismacolor Pencils & Mineral Spirits (Gamsol)

Does this technique work with any colored pencil or does it HAVE TO BE prismacolor? Has anyone tried it with another colored pencil???

TIA

Hi,

I haven't done this technique, but no, I don't think it has to be Prismacolor pencils. I /think/ in fact, Lana has said she uses Crayola pencils. You might look in her gallery or search for her posts?

HTH,

I love to color so when I first started seeing the threads about Prismacolors I knew I had to have them. I used Crayola brand for a couple of months until Michaels had a 50% off coupon. Crayola worked very well. Prismacolor is awesome though. the color is so much more vibrant. But, after seeing the watercolor crayons being used in the gallery it looks like I will start saving so $$$ again so I can get those. I hope I helped.

Default Prismacolor

I have a colorless prismacolor pencil that is used for blending, and it is wonderful.

I will work 2 or 3 shades prisma pencil crayon into the area, then go over it with this colorless pencil, and blend it all together, and the affect is amazing.

I bought it at an artist shop that sells the prisma pencils individually,,,

I also love that about prisma, you don't need to own all 120,,, just buy the colors you like to use, and add on to some other shades,,,

Back to school Costco usually gets the small set of 48 in for back to school at a good price, then add on the colors you want and need,,,,,,,,LOL,,, one day you will get to 120,,,

I have tried several different brands... and all of them *worked* with the odorless mineral spirits (I use Mona Lisa brand from Michael's). IMO it is like many other things, you have to pay more for better quality. The less expensive brands *worked* (including some I purchased from The Dollar Tree)... but PrismaColor(R) gave me far better results... vibrant color, as well as being much easier to blend.

Michael's sells Prismacolor Pencils singly. I started with 5 or 6 basic colors... found them to be fantastic to work with, and ended up purchasing the 120 pencil set... using their 50% off coupon. They are a little spendy, but you can always use their coupons.

Viking ( http://www.Viking.com) also carries them... and sometimes you can hit a really great deal... especially if you try the special codes listed here in SCS a while back. Prismacolor Pencils [size=1]

I've tried it with a Rose-Art set (I think I paid about $6 for a set of 72) and they work fine. The color "moves" more easily with the Prismas, but the price difference gives you lots of extra $$ for stamps!

PS-Watch the Viking codes threads for deals on the Prismacolors - thanks to these lovely ladies here, I got a set of 120 for about $42, and then got a $25 rebate on them. Otherwise, there's no way the budget would have supported that particular indulgence.

Default Mineral Spirits

I LOVE using this technique with SU's pure color pencils. I have to admit - I bought the pure color pencils and didn't like them. With this technique, I use them whereas otherwise I probably wouldn't.

Ditto the pure color pencils! I used my Great Rewards points to get them. Didn't know how to use them. Was using PrismaColor pencils & Gamsol on a project and decided to "sneak" in some pure color pencil lines, and pure color pencil worked as well as the PrismaColor.

I have the Prismacolor pencils and love them. I just got my watercolor crayons and love them too. I think they both have their place and it is just a matter of figuring out what you want to play with at the time. I got my pencils at Dick Blick on line and got a great deal. If money is an issue (which it is for most of us) I would say to get the watercolor crayons. If you are a SU demo demonstrating them at workshops is going to increase your sales where as the pencils don't.
