Hope someone can help me find this again. I've just spent a couple of hours (literally) searching through the various threads on craft sale best sellers. I could have sworn I saw a great photo/discussion in one of them on adding a perfect loop of ribbon (or similar) to the front of an altered comp book to hold a pen. It wasn't a ribbon tied around the whole thing, but a neat loop peeking out on the front side of the book.
Did anyone bookmark this or do you remember seeing it? I can't deal with going back into those threads... Any help would be greatly appreciated.;)
Carol, maybe this is what you saw. Here is a link to page #56 on the craft fair thread. Scroll down to post #2217 by Goldyward. She originally posted a pic of what she saw on Facebook, a loop to attach a pen. Then she edited it to take out the picture.
If you keep reading, there is some more discussion about it further down the page. Looks like it involves wrapping ribbon around the book, leaving a loop protruding near the front binding. Then you cover the ribbon up with the paper you use to cover the book. Several people wondered if the ribbon would "show" underneath the paper.
Ohhhh, thank you, Bugga. At least now I know I'm not insane (there HAD been a picture but it has since vanished).
I did stumble across some of the later discussion, but could not find the original trigger (the photo) that started it. And rereading Goldyward's post, now I know why my keyword searches weren't turning it up.
Goldyward, if you see this, perhaps you could point me in the correct direction to find what you had seen on Facebook?
Just another quick note:
I see from the moderator's note that there was good reason for the photo to have been removed, as per the site's regulations. So that's completely understandable.
What I'm hoping is that perhaps I can get directions to the original source?
In the meantime, thank you again Bugga, for relieving my "I could have sworn I saw..." feeling!
You are so welcome, Carol. Things like that drive me nuts, too. I have actually awakened at 3 am with a thought: "Oh, Oh, now I remember where it was!" And, even worse, stumbled to my computer in the middle of the night to find it, so I could sleep.

I never realized the photo was taken down...I will look for the direct link to the comp book.
BTW...the link I posted was on a social network and meant to be shared with everyone...I never took credit for the actual comp book...I never even hinted that I created it. When I find the link I will post it here.
I found the link and I will be willing to PM it to anyone interested in seeing the project again. The notebook was featured on the Oh My Crafts Blog. It is dated August 13, 2011 and the title is DIY School Notebook. If you wish to search their blog for the actual post.
This is a cute way to attach a pencil (or pen). I went to the site and found it thanks to Goldyward's directions.
For those interested, here's a brief description.
On a composition book, place a pencil or pen on the top on the spine (parallel). Then you attach two ribbons to the front and back to hold the pencil (or pen). They used a glue gun to attach the ribbons. You then decorate the comp book cover, covering the ends of the ribbon. They didn't decorate the spine.
This results in two loops on the spine to hold your pen or pencil.
I notice they put a larger frame-type embellishment on the cover in the place where the ribbons are adhered with the glue gun.
Unless you designed your notebook like that, I am afraid the ribbons would show through regular patterned paper.
I have yet to alter a composition book but I'm wondering if some wide washi tape (folded in half and attached with adhesive of choice) would be strong enough to hold the pen yet thin enough (even doubled) to not show through the cardstock.
If some kind crafter has the supplies and inclination to try I'm sure many of us (at least me ) would appreciate hearing about the results.
That (washi tape) is a great idea and it sounds like it would work. I don't have any to try. Sorry
Thanks Cathy. I hope someone can try it and report the results. I've been trying to not get hooked on new-to-me goodies so I only have a small sampling of washi tape (RAK/PIF) and it isn't wide (plus I don't know exactly where it is in my chaos/craft room).
You're right. That should work.
I saw some lovely washi tape yesterday but didn't get it as the patterns (which were lovely) wouldn't really coordinate well with the books I am making
