I am so excited. I just got a 24 pack of fruit cans. In about 5 minutes I am heading off to Wal-mart to get a safety can opener! I am going to use them in my kids classes for christmas gifts this year. Here is my dilemma. My son has several kids in his class that have food and latex allergies. I know any type of candy is out. I am having trouble thinking of anyting small enough to put in for kids ages 5 and 6. I am hoping that while I am gone, you ladies will come up with some excellent ideas. Also, I am not experinced with those type of allergies, are all plastics considered latex? What about rubber? Thank you in advance!!!!!
Any junk you can get at the dollar store they will love. They will like erasers, bouncy balls, bracelets & beads for girls. Will a matchbox car fit in for the boys? Stickers maybe too.
I'd take one container and your child with you to the $ store. Let them go wild and decide what to fill it with. You have the container to make sure it will fit.
I just went and got my can opener the other day. I can't wait to make some of these. What a great idea for a teacher to use for the kids! Any who. How about looking the magazine Oriental Trader. They are loaded with little things that would fit. Happy hunting. Remeber to post some .
My question is what are all of you guys doing with the fruit?
It is only my husband and I at home and the only fruit he eats is grilled pineapple. I don't eat much canned fruit either. I guess I could keep making fruit salad and feed all the guys at work.
I bought an XOXO brand one at Linens and Things for $20.00 less my 20% off coupon from the paper. Thankfully I have a 16 year old son who LOVES canned fruit. He's eaten the fruit from 48 cans since I read the fruit can thread her! Little did I know what joining this board would mean!
Can someone please post the brand of can opener I'd need to buy? Thanks.
The brand doesn't matter, as several companies have started making the type of can opener that "uncrimps" the lids rather than punching through the metal. I bought mine from the kitchen tools section at Kroger, and it was a generic one that only cost a few dollars. It's still going strong after more than a year, and there are no worries about rust because it never comes in contact with the food. Wal-Mart also has them.

I got one at the grocery store but it didn't work very well. It was hard to turn and left jagged edges. But, I got another one at Bed, Bath, Beyond. Sells for $20 but had $5 dollars off. It works great!!

Look for soup and vegetables with the pop top lids. They come on all kinds of things now!
Thank you all for the great ideas! I just got home from Wal-mart. The can opener I bought was about $8.00. It says Safe Cut on the package. I just used it to open the first of MANY cans of fruit I will now be eating! I need 48 by Christmas! I loved the idea of taking the kids and a can w/ me to the store. That is what I am going to do. Thank you all again!
I am going to use a Campbells Select can to give my Mom a Lowes gift certificate in. I normally don't like to give gift certificates that much but now that I have a cool way to "wrap" them, I am excited about giving them this year!!!
The first can opener that I heard of was the Pampered Chef one. That night I borrowed one from a friend, and went to a part 2 weeks ago and ordered my own. I think it was $17, but I love their stuff too and this project gave me the reason to order something from the party. Now I just have to make sure my husband doesnt put it in his lunchpail!
This was a great project -- fun for Christmas! I think I will make ornaments for my nieces and nephews and seal them in cans this year.
Be careful when you buy some soup cans-some bottoms of the soup cans are rounded and are just one piece (not a separate top and bottom) If you don't see sn edge to catch the can opener, it won;t open it (I learned teh hard way). The bottom edge should be there like the top edge, not just a rounded piece. HTH

I too learned the "hard way" Britta! I thought something was wrong with my new can opener at first until I examined the can and found that the rounded edge was the problem. Isn't it funny how you look at cans differently when you grocery show now? LOL
You could put slips of paper with nice things to say/ compliments about the child or journaling ideas (posted recently), pictures, charms, mini action figures, gold dollar coins, earrings, pom pom critters, trailmix, mini cookies... I love using the "M" from alphadots and using M&M's as the treat. That probably won't work for allergy issues but for anyone else it is really cute! OOOOOh, wouldn't it be cute to punch circles that would fit in the can and then make an accordian book with photos that comes out of the can! Or make it personal "from Santa" with things he has notice the child doing this year that were really helpful! I love it when the leaves "tooth fairy" and "Easter Bunny" finger prints on accident on their notes!
I need to try one of these cans! They are adorable!

Latex and peanut allergies can be so severe that I suggest contacting the parents of the children with those allergies. They should be able to give you plenty of suggestions of what items are safe for their children. As a former teacher I applaud your thoughtfulness in making sure all the children in the class are included safely. I'm sure the kids will all be delighted to "pop" the tops on their gift!
I had the same problem with the rounded bottom cans - I think it was the small Green Giant veggies can. I couldn't get my Pampered Chef can opener to work on it. Had to go buy the mixed fruit!

If you find yourself with pop-top cans with rounded bottoms (instead of an edge for the can opener to grip on to) try opening them at the top (which I have done already) and using CE to reseal them (which I haven't tried yet because I don't have anything to stuff into them). I'm hoping the CE will be strong enough to hold the lid down while pulling the pop top off.

is there a template that I missed somewhere for the small fruit cans and the regular size cans? how much do you use and is there something decorative for the pop top?
Has anyone posted a list to fill the fruit cups with? Finding "cool" stuff that
little is proving more difficult than I thought-especially for the boys.
Ok, can anyone post the link to the thread that gives the directions for these things? I really want to try this but I am clueless. You use the canopener to open it safely then.... did I understand correctly that somehow you reattach them and they can be popped open? I'm kind of lost.

I'm not sure if I'm posting this correctly, but here goes...
Fruit Cocktail Cake (it's quick, easy, common ingredients & yummy!)
Mix together
1 c. flour; 1 c. sugar; 1/2 tsp. baking soda
Mix in
1 can (normal size) drained fruit cocktail; 1 beaten egg
Put in 9" greased pan.
Mix topping of
1/4 c. softened/melted butter; 1/2 c. nuts; 1/4 c brown sugar
Top cake with topping.
Bake at 350 degrees for 40 min.
Enjoy. Now you can have your cake and fruit can, too.
OK - I'm also wondering how you do this. It sounds like you have to buy the fruit cans with pop tops. Then open them from the bottom, clean them out and decorate. Fille them and close them up. How do you do this??? Then the kids (or anyone else) pulls off the pop top to open them?
I found this example in the gallery -but I still don't know how to reseal the bottom. (I hope I added the URL correctly - it's the first time I've tried this.)
For latex allergies, type in "latex allergy" into any search engine, that should give you a good idea of what to avoid. I know erasers and bouncing balls are TOTALLY out of the question! those are nothing BUT latex!!! You could try calling your pediatricians office or local hospital if they are large enough to have a library they could offer you a list of latex products. You would be really surprised to know what people with latex allergies need to avoid! Candy wrappers, I don't believe are latex, but double check. What if you made cookies? you would have to watch the ingredients for other allergies. I don't have children, but it soulds like it's getting harder and harder to send snacks to school that everyone can enjoy. I work in the medical field, so I am somewhat familiar with latex allergies. I've learned a lot the last few years regarding this very serious allergy.
GOOD LUCK!
Trisha

I'm just jumping on the thread to keep an eye out for how to reseal these babies. I've seen real cute ideas, but have no idea how to do it myself. So for who ever the sweetheart is that posts some directions--Thank You!
How about a little seasonal 'foam' stamp? You know the kind that sell for .50 or less. Share a little stampin fun. I think they also make inexpensive stamp pads that are 1" squares that might fit in them.
PS Just run a little Crystal Effects around the bottom and restick! No one can figure it out :P ! (I used the Pampered Chef opener and made a peach cobbler with the fruit.. 1cup self rising flour.. 1cup sugar... 1cup milk. Mix and pour over 1 stick melted butter. Do not stir. Drop on fruit, bake at 375 for 30 mins til dark brown).
The kids will love them. Do one for the teachers too! (I put a dominoe pin in them for adults.)
Directions:
1. Use the safety can opener to cut open the bottom of the can.
2. Eat the food inside ... or empty the food to eat later.
3. Wash the inside of can clean. Let dry.
4. Put some cute gift in the can. What the gift is depends on size of the can. Baby socks; cuddly toy; something personal ...
5. Put Crystal Effects around the bottom of the can, attach the top. (Crystal Effects is your 'glue')
6. Take off any labels from the can.
7. Measure and create a new label the correct size. This is the stamping part! ;)
8. Optional: tie a ribbon around can for a nice effect.
9. Give gift to friend.
10. Watch friend's surprise when they open an apparently sealed can to find a personalized present inside!
The Coluzzle works GREAT for cutting the perfect size circle for the top of the can. Just lay it over the top and figure out which size you need, cut the circle and then punch with a small circle punch on the edge... then just trim a space that fits around the pull-tab. Here's my example:
