Emboss with Punches

How do I emboss my projects using punches? The very idea of doing this has me completely intrigued. I have been looking all day and can't find anything. Any help you may share with me would be greatly appreciated.

I know there are some punches which both emboss and punch at the same time, so your punched out shape has some embossing on it. Fiskars, for example - some of their border and corner punches. I don't know if that is what you are thinking of - if there is a way of embossing with ordinary punches I'd be interested to know about it!!

I've done this - I don't know if it's the RIGHT way, but it works . . .

Punch your shape out of a piece of file folder. I would think cardstock would work, but file folders are a little thicker and I have a ton of scrap ones here, so that's what I used.

Now use the negative of the punch (the file folder with the hole in it) the same as you would a brass stencil - lay your cardstock face down over it and emboss with a stylus.

You can also use these with embossing paste. They're not nearly as detailed as the brass stencils you can buy, but if you want just a plain old solid heart shape, or a snowflake, it works.

I've done a technique called faux embossing. Basically you punch out several of the same shape and color then you stack them on the same color cardstock. It pops up like dry embossing but no template needed

I use the cuttlebug...it has some 4 really cool punches, flower petal which goes with SU Pick a Petal stamp set, heart, butterfly and tags. Once I've punched the shape, I put the cutout shape into an accompanying folder that comes with the punch and can emboss 4 different styles on the shape.

Hmmm, neat idea. Have never used my punches for this. Have used the punched out pieces for embellishments by applying clear ink and ep. But these ideas are great. Will have to try them! Thanks :-)

I've been known to refer to stamps as "necessary evils" and consider myself more of a paper manipulator, so I am really drawn to dry embossing with punches. Basically you punch out the shape in the same color as the card stock you glue it to.
