I've done this - I don't know if it's the RIGHT way, but it works . . .
Punch your shape out of a piece of file folder. I would think cardstock would work, but file folders are a little thicker and I have a ton of scrap ones here, so that's what I used.
Now use the negative of the punch (the file folder with the hole in it) the same as you would a brass stencil - lay your cardstock face down over it and emboss with a stylus.
You can also use these with embossing paste. They're not nearly as detailed as the brass stencils you can buy, but if you want just a plain old solid heart shape, or a snowflake, it works.
