Oh girls, I am SO sorry I typed in greek. I was REALLY, REALLY sick yesterday and in a hurry to hit the couch. Y'all gave me something fun to do when I was feeling horrible. I have good 'ol Texas cedar fever REALLY bad! I am a bit better this morning but still not normal yet. Here are a list of crochet abbreviations:
Standard crochet stitch abbreviations are as follows:
ch = one chain
ch sp = chain space
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
tr = treble crochet, or triple crochet
dtr = double treble crochet
sl st = slip stitch
sp(s) = space(s)
tog = together
sk = skip
rnd(s) = round(s)
lp(s) = loop(s)
yo = yarn over
MC = main color
CC = contrasting color
RS = right side of work
They really are easy to do. The butterfly takes about 10-15 minutes if that long. It probably would be easier to see someone do it in person though if you are learning. Sorry about that. Now back to the box of tissues! :(

I have this on my desk right now! I JUST taught myself over New Year's to crochet using it and I'm working on a scarf pattern right now! I learned to knit a couple years ago using her other book, Stitch-N-*****.

For those who have trouble holding crochet hooks for hours at a time, this is a photo of how to add a grip. I tightly wrap the crochet hook's handle in duct tape until it is the same diameter as a pencil. Then I put a pencil grip over the duct tape. This makes it soft, squishy, and comfortable to hold. WalMart sells these "Gooshy Grips" with the kids' pencils and school supplies. You'll need to experiment to see how far up from the hook to place the grip. That will depend on your personal preference.
Of course, this will only help the hand that holds the hook. It won't do anything for your other hand that holds the thread and the crocheted piece in progress.
I love this wall hanging and love, love, love the flowers.....do you think your Mom would share the directions? If not, I will just take the photo and work it out. Beautiful!
I sent my folks (they winter in Arizona) a picture of the Stampin' Up flowers. I received this cryptic message back from my dad: "Saw the pictures, Mom can make some. Talk later. Dad" (His email messages are short because he can't type very fast.)
On the phone yesterday my mom told me she has patterns for various flowers and the leaves. However, I do not know if the patterns are with her in Arizona, or here at home. If they are with her in Arizona, I won't have access to them until April. If they are at the house, I could probably find them and scan pages to post here. After I talk to my mom on the phone, I will let you know.
Her flowers are definitely more interesting than the SU ones, because they have the rippled layers that stand up (I guess the middle-sized SU flower that has the white, pink and red is kind of like that but to a lesser degree). I think I remember she also crocheted flowers that looked like lily of the valley or some other bell-shaped flower. So stay tuned because I just may have some interesting patterns for you all!

Yes, I agree.....I do not want you or your Mom to go to any trouble getting patterns. I am pretty handy/crafty and can figure this out just by trial. But, I am sure that there are others that would be interested in specific directions.
BTW, how cool that your folks are Snowbirds and that Arizona is their chosen destination! Good for them!!

I'm sure my mom knows exactly where her pattern books are, so once she tells me it won't be a problem to find and post them.
I'm happy that they get to spend the winters in a warm place, too. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary down there earlier this month.
I've pulled out my hooks, yarn and are going to give these a try for my Valentine cards. I think I want a thinner thread but I will get the pattern down first.

Okay everyone! I found the butterfly directions! Yeah! And I took a pic of everything I still had in my recent stash along with the thread I use and the hook. The thread I got from Hobby Lobby and they have lots of colors. The hook I use is 00. Here is a pic and the butterfly instructions (sorry I don't remember who this is from so I can't give the author credit). Bad me!!!
Butterfly
Ch 3, sl st in 1st ch to form a ring.
Notes: 1 round completes the butterfly. All of the stitches on Rnd 1 are worked in the Ch 3 ring, and stitches need to be pushed toward the beg of the rnd as you crochet.
Rnd 1: * ch 3, 2 tr, ch 3, sl st **, [ch 2, dc, ch 2, sl st] twice, rep from * to ** once, [ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 ch, sl st] twice.
Fasten off.

Ch 5, join with sl st to form ring.
Rnd 1:*Ch 4, holding last lp of each trc on hook, work 3 trc in ring, yo, draw through all 4 lps on hook----trc-cl made: (ch 5, work trc-cl in fifth ch from hook) 2 times: sl st into ch-5 ring--one flower petal. Rep from * 4 times more: fasten off.
sl is slip stitch, you slip stitch or "connect" into the ring.
The asterick normally indicates the beginning of a "segment". Then you will be told to repeat that segment.
For instance, if you are making a 5 petal flower, you chain and then sl or slip stitch to form a ring.
Then you will make a petal. (I am making this pattern up - just for a pattern sample.
Chain 2, then dc (double crochet) and then tr (treble or wrap the yarn TWICE instead of once), then dc, chain 2 and sl (slip stitch) into the ring. that makes one petal.
You will then repeat the petal. Instead of repeating the instructions, the pattern will tell you to repeat between the symbols.
Does that make sense? Or just confuse you more?

I thought the same thing about making them myself when I saw the SU! catalog. I can't wait to get home to try these patterns (I'm at work. Oops! Lunch hour is over!). I haven't crocheted in 4 years-when my grandson was born. Love the suggestion to use a gooshy grip on the hook. That's my problem too, my hand aches after a few minutes. (Well, that. . . and I'm not a very good crochet-er)

I just went on Youtube and put in crochet flower for my search and there are lots of videos showing how to knit and crochet flowers. I am a visual learner so this was very helpful..hope it helps you as well... Carol from the windy city.....
I just got off the phone with my mom and even without seeing a photo she said, "Easy peasy."
Well, she didn't say easy peasy because frankly, my mom just doesn't talk that way! LOL! But then she reminded me of these things she made a long time ago where she crocheted little flowers and leaves, sewed them onto a pretty fabric, and then put it in a wooden embroidery hoop. I actually found one upstairs and I've attached a photo. My mom made this in 1985 for her mother. I remember that it hung in my grandparents' bedroom.
These flowers are about 1.5 inches across. My mom said she has different patterns for little flowers like this.
LOL, Julie. I put those Gooshy Grips on anything that holds still long enough... on my Prismacolor pencils and even things like my needle piercing tool and X-Acto knife.
here's a pic of the ones I made! It took me about 15 minutes to make all of them! The largest is 1-3/4" and the smallest about 1-1/4". I just used Beacon's 3 in 1 fast dry acid free glue to attach the layers.
My mom called me tonight. She made several flowers in less than a couple of hours and has mailed them to me. :p I'll post pictures once I get them, and can get more details from her if anyone wants them (such as size hook or thread she used).
