Default Coloring lessons from Princessink

Now that I have your attention, don't you think we should have princessink give us prismacolor and gamsol coloring lessons? I don't mean how to do it.....that has been covered many times. I mean how SHE selects her colors and shades so beautifully. That gal has some major color talent, don't you think?

lol I was just thinking about this earlier today. I've been coloring in some images lately and to be quite honest they aren't as beautiful as what I see on here. I would love to crawl into the mind of some of our top artists sometimes. I read somewhere once about what colors you should use for shadows of different objects but I can't find it. It would be neat to have pictures with little arrows pointing toward areas of interest and saying what was done there. lol can you tell that I'm a student taking anatomy right now?

Hey, Princessink! Do you think you could give us a few pointers....like your favorite pencils for the shading around the images. OR maybe you could do like Silverdragoness suggests and take your long time friend pitcher and pots and tell us the colors you used.

I bookmarked her gallery a long time ago. Her layouts are amazing. Her cards are full of details, yet don't look messy or overwhelming. She's definitely an artist and my #1 SCSer!

I "talked" to Cecilia earlier this week and she has been busy with " Mom stuff" at home as well as trying to meet her dirty girl deadline. I did get the hint way back in March that this month was the "best one yet" and hers wasn't even there!!

So I am sure she isn't ignoring you but already burning the candle at all three ends this week...

betsy (yeah how DOES she make those colors glow??)

Default color theory

While we are all waiting for the pearls of wisdom from princessink I did some googling last night on coloring and color theory and found an article that I thought some might find an interesting read. Its long but good ( I think ). I think others have mentioned this website before but hopefully its helps a few. When you get to pages 6 or 7 she discusses shading and coloring. Towards the end of the article she discusses specific Prisma colors to combine to achieve certain effects. Truly worth skimming through the entire article so that it can be used for later reference.

That is such great information. I'll have to read it on the trip to see parents this weekend. It shouldn't get princessink off the hook though, should it? ;-)

Wow...I don't know what to say but thank you for your compliments. I'm so glad that you like my coloring, it's one of my favorite parts of stamping. I just logged on after being in bed for a couple of days with a virus and loosing my vision in one eye due to an eye disease I ignored after Kyle got sick. But this is definitely the best medicine so far and I'm slowly recovering the vision in my left eye. I would love to do a tuturial on coloring by I think that you have to go through the proper channels to request one. I respect and admire SCS and their moderators/owners so much, I don't want to break protocol. The one thing I will say as to coloring is don't get carried away with the amount of colors that you use. In other words just stick to using no more than 8-10 colors at a time. For shadows, I always use Sepia or a very dark gray and white or sand for highlights.

Ohhhhh!, Cecilia! Take care of that eye. Eyesight is a precious thing. I asked JulieHRR about proper channels. Are you using actual Gamsol or the Mona Lisa equivalent? And for paper, do you find you use any white or only SU? Thank you so much for your willingness!!!

Nope certainly won't get princessink off the hook but it may buy her a little time...
Ann - thanks for posing the question to Julie .
I just bought some Mona Lisa mineral spirits today with my Michaels coupon so I am hoping it works. I hate paying $6 for shipping a $5 item.

I was looking the message board over, it looked pretty active but I must say that the "outline" style format of the message board is not comfortable on my eyes and so I left . But the website does have a wealth of information.
Also as a side note- I played with my ML mineral spirits this evening and felt like I was working too hard to get the color to break down and start spreading . I am not sure if it was the brand of Odorless Mineral Spirits or the brand of stumps I was using (made in China not Taiwan) but I ended up going to inkyattics and ordering the Gamasol and stumps .

JulieHRR has sent the tutorial request to Beate. Maybe when Cecelia's eye is on the mend we can have a little lesson.

Seems to me the whole Prisma/Gamsol technique began with Debbie Gimbel writing the article that's posted on Gingerwood, many years ago now. Then Sanford (the prisma manufacturer) sought her out to put it up on their website. I have it printed out, along with the color theory article, and they're dated back in the 90's.... (I used to spend ALL of my time at Gingerwood!)

Just wanted to share that my vision is fine now but have to keep on top of it and not let it go again.

The article on color theory is great I actually found that several years ago and shared it with my customers. And don't forget to print out the one from Debbie Gimel at the Sanford site, which in my opinion is the best. The color wheel is another great tool especially the one from Stampin' Up! if you're using their carstock and want to match colors. Also, take a look at some of the work from artists at Art.com. You can do a search on just about everything from flowers to vintage and come up with actual art work. I alwlays observe their coloring techniques as to what colors they used and how they did their shading.

To answer Ann's question about paper I use Stampin' Up!'s paper products. I love their Whisper White and Vanilla (old Ultra Smooth) but since it doesn't have a grain, you have to work a little harder on moving the color around. This is when it's important to use a softer blending stump (the ones made in Taiwan and not China) and not wet the tip too much with the Gamsol. Confetti is easier to use if you're starting out. I mainly use Gamsol because it's easy for me to get but for those of you that can't find it any odorless mineral spirits used for thinning oil paints will do. And if you don't have an applicator bottle like the one from InKy Antics, you can buy one from Nasco under their school supply section (sold for tempera paints) or you can just put a little Gamsol in a small plastic cup and cut a small piece of felt to absorb the gamsol. Then pick up the Gamsol with your stump, just touching the wet felt. This will keep your stump from getting too wet which can be a problem.

I had emailed Debbie shortly after finding her article and expressed my appreciation for her contribution to the understanding of coloring and working with Primsacolor Pencils. After a few exchanges back and forth she mention that she has authored several booklet on various topics of interested to rubber stampers. Below is a copy and paste of the information she provided me on her other booklets. I am a strong believer in financially contributing to people who truly provide a value added product or service, as I believe this encourages people with great information and skills to share their knowledge. I ordered two today.
I have written 12, or is it 13, rubber stamping booklets. Below is a title and price list - l et me know if you have questions - debbie

1. MAGIC COLORED PENCIL - $6
Everybody has Prismacolor Pencils (not watercolor pencils, by the way, but art pencils) it seems, but can't get them to blend (forget that annoying white pencil routine, or time-consuming layering). I've developed a top-secret method to blend that's easy, foolproof, and so very pretty. Youll be using odorless Studio Grade Mineral Spirits, so if you're pregnant or suffer from respiratory problems, try Watercolor Pencil instead.
Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits in 2 oz. applicator bottle, $5.00

2. STAMPING ON WOOD - ACRYLICS AS BACKGROUND MAGIC PENCIL FOR COLOR, $6

Youll be working with acrylic paint as a background and Magic Colored Pencil for coloring stampings. Makes wood as pretty as your cards, using painted wooden items, finely detailed stamps, and Magic Colored Pencil to color.

3. PERFECT SHRINK PLASTIC - $8 Finally, learn all there is to know about shrink plastic - how to color it beautifully, how to overcome the "curling up" fear, how to punch it, cut it, hang it, pin it and seal it.

4. USING WATERCOLOR PENCIL FOR RUBBER STAMPINGS - $8 Another toy that everybody seems to have but hasn't mastered. There is a world of terms that apply to watercolor papers, brushes, the right pencils, and techniques that youll become acquainted with and then learn which work best for this specialized usage of the media.

5. DIMENSIONAL DECOUPAGE AND PAPER SCULPTURE USING RUBBER STAMPS - $8
In case you are not familiar with 3 dimensional decoupage, it consists of cutting, shaping and building layers from many copies of the same composition, resulting in a dimensional scene. Actually, you are not limited to the use of entire scenes, which is definitely time consuming. I think most of us rubber stampers have seen florals manipulated to give wonderful dimensional effects. This is the art of paper sculpture. And, then, too, I will now and then raise just one or two elements when I'm using a stamp (or combination of stamps) limited in scope, to add some visual excitement. So..We will look at the whole banana, and just some slices.

6. TOTALLY USEFUL COLOR THEORY FOR STAMPERS - $8
After stampers nail the basics of inking and embossing, the biggest obstacle to making pretty things is the use of color. Learn how to pick a color scheme. Learn how to create dimension by using shading and highlights. Learn too how to get your work to look like the stuff you see in the stamp catalogs and store samples. Identify what's wrong with your coloring, how the Color Wheel can help, how your stamps can help, and a bazillion color schemes.

7. STAMPING ON GLASS AND PLASTIC AND COLORING IT, TOO - $6
I have another secret method for stamping detailed images on glass and plastic and then adding coloring that's way easy and pretty.

8. GOOFPROOF CANDLE STAMPING AND SOAP TOO - $6
So pretty and so easy!! Youll learn the techniques of this sort of stamping, including a secret COOL TOOL so you can use your Tombows on tissue paper without bleed-thru, and application of the paper to the candle without drips (or at least not much). And finally a fabulous way to create stamped soaps with no dipping, varnish, nail polish, etc.

9. FABRIC STAMPING PART I T-SHIRT TRANSFER STAMPING - $6
Oh, this is too cool! Everybody is going say "You made this with stamps!" Not just fabric stamping with big, chunky stamps, but using your detailed stamps and TOMBOWS TO COLOR. And youll never ruin a costly fabric item again, as were not stamping onto the fabric so its goof proof.

10. IN THE BEGINNING BEST STAMPERS STUFF AND HOW TO USE IT - $8
This is the book I should have written first! Its somewhere around 50 pages chock full of information we all wish we had at the start of the stamping adventure buying stamps, inks, papers, rulers, adhesives, cutting, positioning, masking, on and on.

11. STAMPING ON CLAY, MAGIC PENCIL FOR COLOR - $6

You are going to love this I do! Your air-dried clay (Not Paperclay) creations will be beautifully colored using Magic Colored Pencil (so, of course, youll need that too).

12. CREATING STAMPED LAMPSHADES - $6
These arent just stamped, but beautifully colored using the Magic Colored Pencil technique. And theres no risk of ruing costly lamp shades, as Ive found the perfect surface to stamp upon and then adhere.

Whoo Hoo! Some things that I think people will want to know are
1. Shadowing around the image - before you color the main image or after.
2. Layer all colors on completely then gamsol or gamsol in between layers of color.
3. Her favorite prisma colors.
4. Color edges and drag color into image with gamsol or lightly color image leaving a little light area, then gamsol.
Just a few ideas. I'm sure there are other questions that other people have that may help Princessink's tutorial progression.

Too add abit to Ann's list of areas we would like Cecila to help us with, I seem to struggle most with trying to determine which Prismacolors work well together .

In other words are there any equivilents to the SU Dynamic Duos ( Trios or Quads) on the Color Coach? I feel much more comfortable experimenting with SU colors now that I understand how the colors work together ( thanks to the Color Coach) if I could get to this comfort level with my 120 set of Prismas I would be thrilled!

I will be patiently waiting for Cecila's tutorial ! In the meantime I am going to spend some time looking over her links
Thanks,
Sharon
