Had to post the results of my experimenting last night. Saw a couple others using baby oil as a blending medium for Prismacolors so I had to try. I can't get Gamsol overseas and the linseed oil I found here is unbearable. Baby oil is cheap and it smells good! It took a little playing to get rid of the greasy look, and I also found that it helped to have a good light cover of color to start with and blend from that rather than just coloring where I wanted the color the darkest. Here is the card - more to come, I'm sure!
wow Dina the colors are so vibrant .what kind of pencils did you use, were these already oil bases since there are differant kinds of prismacolored pencils.if these are the oil based then I already have them.I ssumed by the way you talked that they are.and you just used the baby oil instead of gamsol.right,I will have to remember this when I need more gamsol.since I bought mine online
__________________ WHAT IS A STAMPPIN ADDICT!
It's someone who buys stamps they didn't normally like at first, only to see it in Split Coast Stampers gallery in a different perspective.
All the other colored penciled cards in my gallery were done using the blender pencil........but it sometimes leaves a visible waxy texture over the image.
Thanks for sharing! I tried the Turpenoid Natural as an option because of my allergies and sensitivities to chemicals, but it still bothers me. I think I can use baby oil and be able to breathe easy.
I am wondering what might happen if the card got warm. For example it is over 100 degrees here and if it sits out in the mail box for a few hours is that baby oil going to bleed and stain the card and envelope. Will it go rancid and smell?
Thank you Thank you Thank you for posting this!!! I just tried it with Mineral Oil (which is baby oil without the scent...LOL) and it worked beautifully.
As for whether it would bleed in the heat....Both Gamsol and Mineral Oil/Baby Oil are petroleum based, so if it were to happen with Baby Oil, I would think it would probably happen with the Gamsol too. Just my opinion, though.
Just wanted to show a comparison between the blending with baby oil vs. the prismacolor colorless blender pencil. in each set, the top picture is approximately the same as what was colored down before blending. The left example on each card is done with baby oil; the right example is the colorless blender. To me, the baby oil seems to move the color better, and it's also easier to go back and add more color over top once you've blended. I've found sometimes with the blender pencil that it will take color off if you add after blending.
Okay, I'm a dunce. How did you get rid of that oily feeling? Did you have to use glossy paper? Could you explain exactly how this is done or point me to some directions? I have the prismacolors, but I'm breastfeeding and not allowed to use the Gamsol. Baby oil I could use, though (and I certainly have plenty of it in the house right now). I'd appreciate any direction anyone could give me.

My dad is an artist and suggested using the blender pencil as well instead of the gamsol. He also suggested using lamp oil, which I had available at home as an alternative. Linseed oil has a tendency, over time, to turn things yellow, so be aware of that. Glad that you also found another alternative to gamsol.

I just wanted to warn everyone that baby oil is dangerous to babies, small childred, really anyone. if it is asparated into the lungs it coats and is a suffocant and it can't be removed. I saw this on Oprah a few years ago, bottles are suppose to labeled with a warning and childproof now. It was a sad story, it happened to one of two twin babies, the baby got into the bottle and chewed on it and did asparate it into the lungs and died. Until I saw this story I would have never known the danger of baby oil, so be careful about leaving it where your little ones can get it.
Know I have to go see if I have any high up in a cupboard, because I want to try this. By the way the bottle I am looking for is from 2000 and was not labled dangerous or childproof, that is how recent this safety precaution has come about, not even sure if I still have the bottle.
Well, I pulled out my collection of colored pencils this afternoon during baby's nap time and tried this. It works really well! If i get some cards scanned, I'll post them. Thanks for the tip!

Just want to make sure that I'll be doing this correctly when using the baby oil do you just use a brush dipped in oil then move over the color you want to blend???

this is excatly the same with me too... i acutally returned my prismas because of the breastfeeding. i was thinking why should i have them sitting in a drawer... but if this works so great... i have to get them again
My eyes are popping out of my head I love colored pencils and have never tried this! I cannot wait to get home after I stop to get some baby oil! Thanks for sharing.
Dina....as are several of us, I am also wanting to hear your directions on exactly how this is done please. You color with the pencils first and then dip and push the color with the stumps? Do you dab off the excess oil first? We'd all appreciate the help. Please!?
