Default Beaded pen question

Why is it necessary to use sticker paper or a label on the pen before you add the beads? I got some Tacky Tape tonight and am ready to start making beaded pens, so wondering about the paper first. Thanks to all you beaded pen enthusiasts!!

I stamp on the label first & color it. Then apply it to the pen. They apply the double sided sticky tape & add beads.

The size for the paper is 1 1/4 X 3 1/4. I use sticker sheets that I cut with my paper trimmer. HTH

Is this for beads on the outside of a pen? I tried this weekend to get beads on the inside...no luck. :? I ended up with a glitter pen instead of a beaded pen.

Default Beaded pen question

Is there a link or your website with some pictures of your beaded pens? I tried to find some last night and gave up. Are RSVP pens round?

I can't speak to other tapes or beads, but I use Terrifickly Tacky Tape and Halcraft Tiny Marbles. I was using white labels, but now I use paper, too, because it's cheaper than the labels. After you put the paper on the barrel, you put the tape on, either in strips or if you get the sheets you can cut one sheet and wrap it around, then you roll the sticky pen in the beads. If the beads aren't sticking, try heating the pen slightly with your embossing gun to warm the tape up. The package says for maximum stickiness, the tape needs to be 70 degrees or warmer. So if it's cold where you are, try that. I attached a photo for you to see.

HTH,

Karen

IMHO the very best place to get microbeads is from pennywisearts.com. You won't beat the prices and the service is phenomenal! You can purchase the adhesive there as well. I've used their products with great success.

Default Purchase your micro beads from the Queen...

at:

Pennywisearts.com

I've been having a blast making these with my kids for about 2 weeks now. Tell the Queen, Cindy Lou Who sentcha!

Suzanne, the Queen, has clear microbeads, which I would recommend for someone just starting out, as they're versatile and you can color your label or stamp it with any COLOR you want. I also use my sponges to daub on more color.

All you have to do is stamp on a label, cut it out to fit the clear barrel of the pen only, affix it to the pen, then cut another piece the same size of O'so sticky tape paper. You can get this from the queen as well. She has the best prices on both.

Hope that helps!

Nearly everyone on my Christmas list is getting one of these this year.

Viking has the pens for CHEAP, too! If you order $25 of product, they will deliver it for free to your door. I'm outta pens and waiting my Viking shipment.

There's a tutorial on the Queen's website for a Bic Stick pen. Although the measurements are different, it will still give you the idea of how to make these. I'll see if I can find it and post it later.

Default beaded pen question

OK....is it necessary to have the Tacky tape go all the way around? I can only find 1 1/16 wide tape. By the way, now I understand why you need the paper first!! Just need to know how you get the tape to go around all the way!!! Maybe several strips horizontally?

I've never used the sheets of tape, only the strips. And I've used many different widths of tape. As for the microbeads, I get mine at Michaels, but I'm looking at other options to cut costs and because I don't want to shop at Michael's anymore.

For those of you who get the beads from Pennywise, are they smaller than the SU microbeads? I've seen the SU microbeads on a pen and they have a "sandy" look -- not as clear as the ones I buy. I don't want to buy a bunch of beads and have them not turn out like I want. If anyone has any pens in their gallery that use the Pennywise beads, please let me know so I can take a look and compare them. TIA,

Karen

I was flipping through the Dec issue of Paper Works magazine last night and saw some beaded self-adhesive paper advertised in several colors! I don't have the magazine right now - my daughter took it to work with her today (I think thats called theft) - but it was advertised near the back third of the magazine in the section where they profile new products, about 6/page. It was on the left hand page in the upper left corner of the page. It didn't list a price but there was a company name which I'm going to try to track down, once I get my magazine back this evening. Maybe someone else has the magazine and can find the details before I do - - - just thought I'd share!

RE: Dec issue of Paper Crafts
I've got my magazine back now, here's what the ad says:
"Manufactured by Kandy Korp. . . . . . . .Crystalettes are micor-beads fused to an adhesive sheet. Simply cut the sheet in the desired shape, remove the backing strip and adhere the beaded cutout to your project. No fuss, no muss! The 6 x 2 3/4 inch acid-free sheets can be cut with scissors, punched or used with your favotire die-cutting machine to get the exact shape you need. . . . . . . Suggested retail price - $8.99"

The colors pictured in the ad are: green, red, gold, copper, grey (probably really siver) & white.

I'm now going to search for some of these.
Happy Thanksgiving!!

Sorry, the ad does not specify if the $8.99 is for one sheet or multiple ones. You're absolutely right, $8.99 is outrageous for one sheet! Will have to do a search for them later - have company coming in about 5 minutes and I need to get out of my pj's!

Oh, ad does say that they are by Kandy Korp - - - if anyone else has time or wants to do internet search.

Hi Karen,

Yes, the Pennywise beads are smaller. I haven't used the SU ones yet, but the catty says they are .8mm, and the Pennywise ones are .5mm

I'm going to try to attach a pic of the pens I've made so far. All are using the Pennywise beads and O So Sticky Tape Sheets cut to size.

Oh girls these are too cute...so why am I so afraid of them? I may have to tackle this fear this weekend because I wouldn't want it to get out of hand. I was going to do journal jars with journals and these pens would be a great addition....

I also would like to know if the beads are on the outside and how durable are they if they are? Thanks

There are different kinds of beaded pens. The ones I posted, the beads are on the outside. It's just a regular bic pen. I use the instructions posted by QueenPennywise, to paraphrase... You stamp onto a piece of paper 4 1/4" x 1 1/16" and run it through a Xyron machine (or just use a white sticker to stamp on). Adhere that to the pen. Cut some of the O' So Sticky tape to 4 1/4" x 1 1/8" (slightly bigger than the white paper), take the protective layer off of one side and wrap that around on top of the stamped paper. Remove the other protective side on the sticky tape, and roll it into a tray of the micro beads. Make sure the beads fully cover the tape so there are no sticky areas. Roll the pen around in your hands to press all the beads into the sticky tape really well. The beads stay put pretty well, though if you purposely scrape them with a fingernail or something, you can pull some off.

It's pretty easy and it's really fun!

How many RSVP style pens will one container of beads from Penny Wise Arts make? Do you recommend the sheets of tape or the rolls? If the rolls of tape, what size?

Thank You!

Hello all. I am new to this site and new to stamping on things other than cards. I am really interested in making some of these beaded pens. If anyone has the instructions for making the rsvp pens, please email me. I have purchased the pens and can't wait to try it!

Thanks,
Kari

Default Beaded Pens

I made some of these and boy am I hooked! They are beautiful!!!!

I've got some mailing labels that are long and will just wrap around the pen. Then I used the Terrifically Tacky Tape I got from Michaels and some beads from Michaels and I had it done in no time.

I found that if I leave the pen to sit for 24 hours, then the beads stick better. Also, really squish the pen in there so the beads are tight together.

It's an Awesome gift idea!

Charisma has great instructions here:

Forums at Splitcoaststampers

A package of beads from pennywise does a whole big bunch (I think that's the scientific term) of RSVP pens. I would definitely get the tape in sheets...much easier than strips. Pennywise also sells the tape.

Don't hesitate! These are super easy and fun! HTH.

I agree about the sheets of tape, for sure! I was keeping track of how many pens I could make from one 8" x 6" sheet -- 11 pens, which is better than the strips.

It looks like the Pennywise beads are clear so I might try them.

I've used UPS sticker labels for these pens and it doesn't seem to be a very good surface for stamping. They appear to be coated, and the classic ink doesn't dry very well, then smears. I know sticker paper is available that is designed for stamping, but I what else are people having success with?

I have been using the Avery Inkjet sticker project paper to stamp my images before applying the beads. No problem with bleeding. I just cut it into the size strip I need depending on the type pen I am using and cut the o'so sticky paper tape the same size and it works great. That way I don't have to worry about adhearing cs to the pen. I made one with cs and it was quite thick. It looked fine, but was thicker than the rest.

I'm using a sticker paper - I think it's from Judikins (?). Bought it a long time ago for some technique I never ended up trying LOL. It's nice and glossy so it looks great brayered with Spectrum!

I just used plain printer paper, and ran the strip through my Xyron. I couldn't find cheap paper labels, so this worked well for me.

Default beaded pens

Okay guys, this sounds pretty neat, bit I've never seen or heard of these pens. Could someone post a site or picture so I can take a look. Sound like something I could do with my children. Thanks!

What are ya waitin' for?!?! These pens are O'So simple - even your KIDS can do them!!! You just need to get over yourself and GO FOR IT! LOL!! Sit down and cut the supplies for the kids and let them have at it! They'll have you over your fears in no time at all!!

By using the sheets of adhesive, you can precut several pieces for lots of uninterrupted beading time! I love to take a full sheet of label paper (from Office Depot) and run my rollagraph design over the whole thing - then cut it up to size and I have GOBS of labels all ready to go!

This project is the mainstay of Penny Wise Arts!! It's what started our whole business - I kid you not!!

For those that still haven't found our instructions, I'll post them here for ya next!!
