Apologies for the late posting. I'll be along in about ten minutes with a couple of visuals.
What I would like you to do is take a stencil with fairly open spaces and stamp script over it. You can use a background script stamp or stamp repeated sentiments. If the spaces in your stencil aren't open enough, you won't get a good effect (think halos around masked images). Alternatively you could cut your own mask/stencil from copy paper, and being thinner, that will make things easier for you.
After your script stamping is dry, feel free to then stencil colour into the area or leave it black and white and use it for a background. Make sure to wipe any ink left from the script stamping off the stencil first.
I will be along with a couple of visuals ASAP, but I'm afraid I won't have time to create a full sample.

TLC986 Script Over Stencil (but due to a hiccup with the keyword last week, some of last week's cards are still showing in this gallery. Sorry again...
A DIY circle stencil with script only:
The same piece sponged with yellow, blue and green. I'll make this up later in the week when I get time.
A two-layer city stencil from TCW. I stamped the wide open area with script and then stencilled in the outline with red.
