Here is where you will find our monthly challenges. No chat please.
Welcome to the MMJ's.....If you like messy, texture, mixed media and fun, then you are in the right place. Our challenges aren't intended to take away from what's on this wonderful site, but to give you further inspiration and maybe for those times when you are craving more MM and need a fix.
These challenges started with 2 of us who needed such inspiration during a time when we had lost our mojo. Now there's a little band of us who are playing each month and sharing our different take on some cool MM techniques.
HOW DOES IT WORK.....someone finds 1 or 2 MM videos, shares them and we take inspiration from them for our project. Currently there's 3 of us who have been finding videos, but anyone who wishes to share something, post on this thread and so we can keep a note of who is doing the monthly challenge. The more the merrier.
WHEN IS THE CHALLENGE?.....this is currently a monthly challenge and to allow everyone to still play in all the other SCS challenges.
WHAT DO WE MAKE?.....Whatever you wish. A card, journal/scrapbook page, tag, ATC....whatever you want.
WHEN DO WE POST OUR PROJECT?.....we have been posting on the 15th of each month, however now we have this thread, post whenever you wish. Just make sure you post your project link back here so we can all see it and leave you some love.
KEYWORD: Each month we have a new keyword starting with MMJ......
December 1st - MMJ031 - BREAK THE BLANK PAGE (Post #119)

It's time for our September challenge.....whoohoo....
MMJ04 - PAPER TOWELS
Our "hostess" with the mostest for September is Kandie. (aka KemerNow)
Kandie has chosen the following video and a blog using paper towels. I know some of us leave our paper towels in our spray boxes and ink them up, so if you have some paper towels lying around, get them out and use them on your project.
Create whatever takes your fancy. A card, journal/scrapbook page, tag, ATC or just create a BG for a future project.
When you've posted your project, make sure you leave the link here so we can see your creation and leave you some love.

Hard to believe September is two days away. Here are three videos featuring masking tape techniques. Two are more elaborate journal designs that fly by at the speed of light, and one is normal time but the demonstrator talks very slowly. At any rate, watch as little or as much as you wish. Hopefully you will see a masking tape technique you might like to try. Have fun! And I apologize that I don’t know how to insert a video, only the link.
A paper towel technique for my DTGD and Teapot Tuesday card. The background is torn pieces of paper towels from a Tattered Lace class from a few years ago.
Note....Kandie’s challenge is MMJ05 - Masking Tape
Thanks Kandie for the challenges. On my list.

Good morning and welcome to the 15th of September and a new group of videos on a fun technique. I’m your hostess today, and I’m featuring four videos on water-soluble crayons such as scribble sticks, Gelatos, Distress crayons and Neocolor 11 wax pastels, or whatever you might want to use.
I’m posting four videos because I can’t decide which two to feature. . And I have watched all four but haven’t tried them, so I’m looking forward to having fun as well!
MMJ07 October 1st Challenge: Using Texture Pastes Create a piece using one of the techniques from these 3 Videos. I used both the paste and watercolor technique, and the paste and embossing powder technique on my panel, which is posted on MMJ chat thread.
Gracie after watching TH I’ve had to add the new texture paste to my Amazon list, I won’t be able to order it until next year, I guess there will be more on it by then , thanks ! Ha,ha
I love the texture with embossing powders, I have to give that a go.
Jan, I think you can google how to make homemade texture or embossing paste, too. It was fun doing the heat embossing...I never realized that you could do that.

Gracie I’ve already made some paste a while ago and I usually use it with glitter which works really well, I have far too much of every colour so any reason to use some is good but I’m going to have a go with embossing powders.
Whoohoo it’s time for another MMJ challenge and today I’m it LOL. Those who know me, know I love BGs. I started playing with a Gelli Plate about 2 years ago and it’s one of my favourite tools in my craft room. I had a challenge on the S2S thread where we had to make BGs using our gelli plates and using household objects. That’s what I love about the plates. You can use all mediums...dry or wet...and you can use stencils, stamps or anything you find in your bin. I’ve used items that were in my DH’s tool box and also a golf spike repairer. There’s no limits.
So today, I’m challenging you all to get out your plates and start to make some BGs. You can either use the BGs on a project, or simply use part of a panel or even die cut. Just play and have fun. If you don’t have a plate, I’m not suggesting you run out and buy one, but check out the videos below where a gel plate isn’t used. You can still create fun BGs.
I thought I would start with the basics so those of you who know how to use your plates, I apologise, but I am assuming that some people haven’t used one before. There’s a video on tips before you start, followed by a cool video pulling prints, including ghost prints. My favourite site to follow is Gelli Arts and the artists on there.
Enjoy and remember, if you don’t like your first print, don’t throw it in your bin...simply roll more paint and pull a second layer. Have fun and I can’t wait to see what you all come up with. I will post my sample prints soon.
There’s so much more I would love to share with you all and on what you can do with a gelli plate, but they are for future challenges
Keyword: MMJ08
Have lots of fun.
PS: Remember to post your creations on the other thread and chat also *wink*

Great videos, Jayne. If any of you have a rubber mat to use in your die cutting machine for embossing with thin dies, that would probably also work similar to the silicone mat that Mike uses. I would suggest using either on top of a sheet of fun foam for more cushion.
However, it is also possible to make your own gelli plate. Here's a recipe for a good long lasting plate. The key is that it has glycerine in it.
Glycerin Gelli Plate
9″ x 13″ cookie sheet – (found at Dollar Tree)
mixing bowl
rubber spatula
measuring cup
strips of newsprint
strips of cardboard to level pan if needed carpenter’s level to check counter top
2 (6 oz) bottles of glycerin – (found online, at drugstores & Walmart)
4 ounces of powdered gelatin – please note 1 packet does not equal 1 oz)
½ cup cold water
1½ cups rapidly boiling water
The basic recipe ratio is 6 fluid oz glycerin to 8 fluid oz water to 2 oz (weight) gelatin powder.
You can use this ratio glycerin/water/gelatin to create a plate of any size.
Get all your supplies ready before you begin. Level pan; open gelatin packs & glycerin bottles; pour gelatin powder into small container.
Boil 1½ cups water; you will add this later.
Pour ½ cup cold water & one bottle of glycerin into bowl; stir gently until combined.
Add gelatin powder to the mixture; gently stir & pat out all the lumps & clumps.
Add the boiling hot water to the mixture; gently & slowly stir to combine completely.
Add 2nd bottle of glycerin & gently stir.
Carefully pour mixture into leveled pan. Pull newsprint across surface to remove any bubbles. Let it harden on the counter before you try to move the pan. Let the plate set up overnight. Put firm platein refrigerator for several hours. After the plate has hardened overnight, store between 2 acetate sheets, so it does not evaporate so quickly.
As time goes by, the water from your plate will slowly evaporate. The plate may get harder, more sticky or get holes & scratches in it. When this happens, it is time to refresh the plate.
Cut plate into smaller pieces & microwave it slowly. Do not over heat or it will cause foam & bubbles. Check every few minutes & stir to get it to dissolve evenly. Add enough hot water to melted plate so volume is back to somewhere between 3½ to 4 cups. Stir & make sure everything is dissolved.
Have your pan ready. Pour the melted mixture slowly into the level pan & let harden.
If you pour the mixture through tightly woven cheese cloth, then all the gunk & bubbles will get caught in the cloth & removed from your new plate.
*Sorry, I don't know why there are all the extra spaces. I did manage to remove some of them.
Thanks Melody. I’m glad you included how to make your own gelli plate. I had a video for that but forgot to post it.
Loving this group. Hugs

Not sure if you are a tea lover or not, but tea bags can be a fun to incorporate in your crafting. I personally love tea and drink several cups a day. I save a lot of my bags to craft with but some times I just buy the tea for the bags (bad I know but I am admitting to it).
Here are a few videos to inspire you:

Fun Double Tea Bag Creating

Ideas for Playing with Tea Bags on Cards

Altered Tea Bags

You are sure to find a fun idea or inspiration in these videos but if you are really bored or have some leftover tea bags after all this you can can make your tea bags into a rocket:

Do not try this inside your house and be sure to wear safety goggles and have a fire extinguisher around. I just love the CrazyRussianHacker!!!

It’s Friday...it’s not the 15th but I thought I would post the challenge early and so those of you who want to try something different this weekend can play.
We all have washi tape but how many of us have tried to make our own. I came across one video months ago and saved it in my library and since then have found more. It’s an easy challenge. At first I thought why would I bother when I have at least 60 rolls of washi tape, but then I saw the possibilities and how cool it would be to make your own individual tape for MM projects and particularly using recycling paper.
I will post my success and failures on the other thread including a tag I’ve made today using some of the tape. I made 3 different types....some using scrapbook paper on double sided tape. With this technique I thought well I do that anyway but I did stamp on top of the patterned papers and got some cool effects.
I also used brown packing paper and that didn’t give the effect I was looking for. I found my paints weren’t so vibrant on top of the paper. Finally I used masking tape and found this gave the best results.
Have a go at all the different techniques shown in the videos and see which one you like the best. I’ve ended up cutting mine into strips and ended up with beautiful rainbow coloured deli paper that will come in handy.
The main thing is to just have FUN. Happy weekend.

Besides being a stamper, I am also a quilter, and have a large fabric stash, so it's always great when I can cross purpose some of my supplies.
Here is a video showing how to emboss fabric.
<a href=">embossing fabric
Although any fabric that is thin enough to put through your die cutting machine will work, I found I personally liked the results better with plain, lighter colors, rather than a busy print. But play with whatever you have -- you may like the busy fabrics or dark fabrics. I made samples showing both light and darker fabric.
Thanks Jayne: Will check these out as soon as I can find some extra time.
My hubby John is doing better. He suffered a fall on Sunday and grazed his head. His eye was fully shut yesterday but by the end of the day was able to open it. I am still addressing Christmas cards. Just a day or two more and all should be done. Can’t wait to get caught up here,

SuZ Sorry to hear about your husband's fall on Sun. I hope his eye is OK. I fell on Friday and had to have 10 staples put in my head, fortunately it was the side of my head and back from my eye. I feel his pain! Wishing him a quick recovery!

What to do with all those leftover yet interesting paper scraps and strips? Here’s a fun non-challenge for over the holiday season and until we start challenges again on January 15.
