Sue, I've tried the same thing---minus the gum arabic---the only paper it showed up well on was a glossy black. It left a pretty shimmery bubble pattern. Jennifer McGuire had a good tutorial on it...

Ranger's Archival Jet Black ink works well with all the wet techniques and does not smear with the alcohol-based inks that I use. An extra advantage is that it comes in a jumbo size for large stamps!
