Hey all. My name is Shelley & I've been on Splitcoast for years. I'm a scrapbooker & cardmaker but I'm just getting started at art journaling. Over the years I've acumulated many art products(watercolor paints & pencils, acrylic paints, pastels,etc...) that I mainly use for backgrounds or coloring stamped images. Then the other day I saw this forum & thought I wonder if I could do actual pictures with them??? So I bought a mixed media journal & gave it a shot. Now I'll never be a Da'vinci but I'm not as bad as I feared either. So I'm sketching & painting & writing bits of my day & having a ton of fun. Thanks for the inspiration.
Woo hoo! Welcome Shelley! I've been having so much fun in here - I think you'll love it! Check out the gelli printing thread - some great ideas in there!
Yay - welcome Shelley! The great thing about art journaling, too, is that it's whatever you want it to be. If you use it to try out a new technique and you don't like it, you can make notes on what doesn't work and what to try differently next time.
I recently started a watercolor journal, and I start off with a water-soluble graphite pencil because I love to scribble and sketch - the pencil blends so beautifully with a waterbrush so I can soften the sketch lines that weren't quite right and I end up with a watercolory sketchy image that's a great base for more color.
Lydia that gelli printing does look so fun, but one of my goals for now is to figure out how use what I have. If I'm a good girl for a while that gelli plate might be my reward. LOL
Dina love those pages. I've been sketching & watercoloring mostly so far. Loving it. Those water soluble graphite pencls are also on my list of possible rewards. Have you seen the Derwent Graphitints water soluble colored graphite. They look scrummy.
Welcome Shelly! Looking forward to hearing about and sharing journaling experiences with you.
I too am trying to use what I have, including a Bind-It-All that was sitting on the shelf unused. Right now I'm accumulating pages in a folder that I will eventually bind into a book.
I'm just getting into water coloring, I've seen some wonderful journals done in only pencil and water color.
Hi Stacy. I'm thinking someday I'll have to break down & get something for binding my own journals & scrapbooks.
I want to try all kinds of mediums in my journals but I have a feeling I'll keep coming back to watercolor. I'm loving the Frugal Crafter for tips & tricks on watercolor. And she's really fun to watch.
Hi, Split-Pea, I'll never be DaVinci either, but that's okay because I have his images as stamps, and I can pretend. I've been here four years and got into mixed media projects about three years ago. Now I'm doing larger, framed projects and cards, which now are almost all small mixed media collages. I'm contemplating art journals and thinking a lot about where I'm going to store them!
Hi there Louisa May. Ooooh DaVinci stamps. Very cool.
I know right, about the storage thing. When I picked up a journal & brushes at the store & said I was gonna start art journaling I could see my hubby thinking "Where the heck are you gonna put that cause there's no more room in your craftroom." LOL I'm very lucky he's so supportive of my crazy.
LOL, I saw a set of graphite pencils on clearance yesterday and picked them up to see if they were water soluble but I guess they weren't since it didn't mention it anywhere on the packaging. bad, bad, almost enablers
There are plenty of ways to bind pages without a machine including simply punching holes and then tying the pages together with ribbon. I'll bet there are even some tutorials here at SCS.
Not to hijack the thread but I actually did get to see a DaVinci art exhibit a few years ago, way cool.
Did my first page with acrylic paints tonight. Not terrible. I'll try to get a pic tomorrow. I'm just using cheapy craft paint. I got a touch carried away over the years & don't even want to count how many bottles I have. It felt good to use a tiny bit of it.
I thought that's what this site was called Splitcoastenablers
BWAHAHAHAH! (Looks innocent )
, LOL
Cheap craft paint is what I'm using too but I really need to get a decent extender. They dry up way too fast, especially now that it's summer and 100+ outside. Ceiling fans and A/C are on non-stop now.
After years of making cards -- scrapbooks, I really want to just play. Starting to take old paper, paints (love to mix colors) and stencils -- using up collage papers etc. Not expecting a result...or a masterpiece....just fun and learning to use new stuff....Who is with me?

What color medium do you guys use most?
split-pea- I love your gallery & blog. Your pages are so pretty.
Art journaling I tend to work with a lot of acrylics, India Inks, Crayons & alcohol inks. For acrylics I use high end and cheapies in my art journaling.
Sharon that's kinda my goal too. Play, experiment, see what I enjoy. Use up some stash in the process.
DeeAnn thanks for checking out my gallery & blog, and for the compliment. I'm not very good at updating my blog, but I do enjoy having a central location for pics of all my crafts. I have way to many. lol
I have over 100 bottles of acrylics too. It's so easy to say "Oh they're cheap I'll just throw a few in my basket." lol
I'm wanting to try inks more. I came acrossed a dip pen I got ,I don't know where, & used some liquid Rit dye to see if it would still work. It did so I'll have to get some ink for it. It's fun to try something so different.
I've been reading this thread thinking, "Oh, yeah, I have that too!" :-) Never thought of myself as a multimedia crafter, but then I started doing a few challenges and discovered I was! And it sounds SO much nicer than "office supply junkie." I feel like I don't have a good eye for messing with colors, shadows, and highlights, but I'm working on enjoying what I create without thinking about how non-artistic I am.

I'm with you! I don't want to say I was bored with making cards, because I keep making them, but they were looking boring to me. I wanted them to have a new WOW factor and not because of a new technique. I have so many art supplies that were collecting dust I was anxious to do something different. I saw a card that used glass beads in the focal point and after a weekend on YouTube I was hooked. Now....I have the art journaling bug and being able to finally 'free my art' (and the dust off my supplies) has created and awakened a new sense of who I am creatively. Does that make sense?
so much for suggesting you playing with them until you can get some actual calligraphy ink. I dug out my calligraphy pens and soaked them yesterday and then put cartridges in (don't have any dip style right now). Just need some play time and inspiration of what to write/draw with them.

bet you are better that you think, we are our own worst critics. Glad to hear you have given yourself permission to just have fun. I need learn to let go more myself.
Cobrylin - Makes sense to me, as soon as I learn to let go more I'm hoping to find that happy place you seem to have found.

Hi there. Office supply junkie. LOL! Yeah I know that feeling. Most of the time I feel more like a collector then a crafter.
I'll bet as you relax & gain confidence you'll find you're pretty artistic. So keep on enjoying the process.

Hi. I find I have a tendency to jump back & forth between crafts. When I get bored with one I move to another. I scrapbook, make cards, crochet, knit, cross stitch, make jewelry, & now art journaling. I just keep circling.
I think art journaling is freeing because it's not for anyone else so it doesn't have to be showroom presentable. It's all about what speaks to you & that will give you a clearer picture of what you like on a more personal creative level.

I will probably play with the rit dye for a bit before I jump into inks.;-) I can't wait to see what you come up with.

So what is everyone working on/playing with today?
Hubby & I had date night last night & he let me wander a bit in M's(not that I needed anything LOL) so I picked up 3 water soluble graphite pencils & a punch/ stamp set from ek that was on clearance. So my plan is to play with my new toys a bit today.

I LOVE water soluble graphite! I use the Viarco Art Graf pots - they are dreamy.

My desk is currently covered with mail and papers associated with moving. I will be packing up my studio this week and it likely won't be unpacked for close to a month I think. Sigh..

Best hubbies in the world are the ones who let their girls roam freely through Michael's. I went to Michael's this weekend with my hubby. It was a nice treat. I don't live near Michael's any more. We were on that side of town for a different reason and my hubby drove to Michael's. Aaahhh. I bought a tube of acrylic paint, some mediums & I got the 1/2inch ATG gun for a super cheap price. It was under $12.
I redo my studio right before my B-day every year. That is what I am working on. I am working on my coloring tools right now. It's mainly admiring them. I curled up with a beautiful book tonight that I couldn't put down and cried all the way through it.

YAY, you found the pencils!
Wow! Way to stay busy. ;) Good luck on finding your desktop & getting to play with your new stamps. Of course I had to go check out Power Poppy stamps...you evil temptress you. Gorgeous stamps.

: I can't imagine not being able to play for a month. And just thinking about packing it all up to move makes me very tired. Good luck with your move.

I know, right? Even when you don't buy much it's nice to just browse through the pretties. LOL
I so need to do a major redo of my room. I'm terrible about cleaning up a project before I start a new one so stuff is piled to the rafters. Combined with, maybe kinda sorta, to much stuff & I end up living in constant fear of an avalanche.

If you have an avalanche I bet it would be a really pretty mixed media piece.
Don't feel bad my library is an avalanche. I have been piling books in my library while I concentrate on my studio. I am really fearing an avalache.
