Default MIX253: Chihuly Inspired (12/1/17)

Challenge Title: Chihuly Inspired
Hostess: peeps321 (Polly)
Keyword: MIX253

I had the opportunity years ago to see an exhibit by glass sculptor Dale Chihuly. I was deeply impressed by his view of art which he expresses in blown glass. He is truly a trailblazer in this medium. He lets the molten glass take him where it needs or wants to go. Asymmetry and irregularity are hallmarks of his work. For more information I urge you to check out his website: Dale Chihuly.

Challenge: Using Chihuly as your inspiration make a card or project. Tell us what inspired you. I'll attach some of his work or feel free to browse his site for other inspiration.

Remember to use at least two or more different mediums on your project. See this post for some ideas. Also make sure to put MIX253 the keyword section

See the MIX253 gallery here.

Cool challenge, Polly! We've been to the museum in Chihuly's hometown of Tacoma and saw so many of his beautiful pieces. He is amazing.

Hurrah for an early post when I had booked s day off work. And a double hurrah for such a fun theme. When we had a more active photo forum one of the ladies shared fabulous photos of an exhibition in her local Botanic Gardens. I'm already thinking of faux carnival glass or faux glass flowers.

Here's my Faux Glass Flower tag: MIX253 Faux Glass Flower by Cook22 at Splitcoaststampers

and I'm adding a close-up of the poinsettia here. Off now to make another card inspired by that wonderful spiky blue "flower".

On an aside, the National College of Art and Design is just down the road from work. And last week I noticed they had a glass exhibition from international artists, the first of a proposed Biennale, and I had time to go in and look. Some of it was just amazing. Surprisingly lovely were some "art jewellery" pieces that were shaped like body organs - like clear glass kidneys with little coloured flowers in them. I'm not sure they would be wearable, but they were really beautiful.

Inspired by #11 thumbnail.

MIX253 Butterfly Birthday.

It's now up to 57F in my attic - but I think something more active like actually tidying my desk is now called for, much as I'd love to make another Chihuly-inspired card.

Ugh. I failed miserably today. I decided to try the faux glass flowers tutorial. Spent all morning on them and then couldn't find anything to stick them together. Maybe I can save it tonight. Chihuly is very big here in Rhode Island because of his time spent at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design).

This process video gave me some good ideas to try. https://vimeo.com/232865348 We saw a lot of his work at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens a few years ago. Beautiful art and a great choice for the Mixability Challenge Polly.

Fabulous inspiration Polly. The Milwaukee Art Museum has a gorgeous Chihuly piece that wow’s me every time I see it!

Thanks for the video link Gail....Here's another one showing soft cylinders...the actual process for the designing of those blown orb type things. https://vimeo.com/232561528
Chihuly no longer does the actual blowing of the glass but he leads a team telling them exactly what to do.It's fun to see how they add the designs to the glass object.

We're very fortunate here in the Twin Cities as our Minneapolis Institute of Arts has one of those Chihuly squiggly like chandeliers hanging in the entry of the museum. I'm in awe every time I visit. Love it.
I'm glad everyone is having so much fun with this....:p

A hot glue gun works well - or a brad through the centre.

What an amazing site. These artists mesmerized me with the different things they made. Here is my card.

I love Chihuly. Have seen his work on exhibit at Louisville Glass Works, Welcome Center Columbus In and I live in Birmingham and the art museum has a stunning display of Chihuly. I will do a card next week, but it is not the first one inspired by his work. Thanks for bring his work to the attention of SCS'ers.

I, too, have visited and viewed Chihuly glass at the Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle, WA, and I browsed the Web and saw this piece: http://ourlittleacre.blogspot.com/20...ture-park.html, located on the cafeteria ceiling at the park in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It is the 8th picture down. The color theme and the light and airy Spring-like feel re-enforced my card design. I used pigment ink stamping, Copic Markers, and Wink of Stella (butterfly sheen) as my mixed media elements.

Here is my card: Watercolor Wings for a Beautiful Insect!
