Default 12-15-17 No more EXCUSES- MIX255

Hostess: MariLynn Challenge: No more EXCUSES
Keywords :MIX255
Gallery: MIX255

So... we are up to Mix challenge number 255. Have you tried mixed media yet? If your answer is "NO", what is your excuse?

Too expensive?
Too hard?
Too messy?
Too time consuming?
Too...What???

That is what the mix-ABILITY challenge is all about. Helping you to be ABLE to create mixed media cards and projects.

If your answer to the question, "Have you tried mixed media yet?" is "YES", is there some new technique that you haven't tried yet because it is new?

Sometimes we ALL need a little push to try something new. Well consider yourself pushed.

This fall I got the opportunity to see my grandson go from crawling to walking holding on to the couch and then to walking on his own and now he is running full steam ahead.

Our crafting journey is similar. We all start at some level and take baby steps and the more we practice and try new things, the more comfortable we become.

One of the greatest thing about SCS is how members help each other. Some websites show you techniques, or products just because they want to sell you something. Here at SCS we just want you to create something.

My challenge this week is if you have never tried mixed media, don't let excuses hold you back. Try to create something mixed media today. If you have any questions just post in this thread and if I can't answer them, I am sure someone here can. and if you have tried mixed media, my challenge to you is to try something new. If you need some suggestions, just ask in this thread.

I look forward to seeing what you create. I know it is going to be awesome. Make sure that you use the keyword: MIX255 when posting your project so that it will show up in the gallery.

MIX255 Bee Happy

Well, I try to play in the MIX most weeks. I did try something new to me, I suspect it's probably similar to what Lydia was doing with Infusions, in that I sprinkled powder over Versamark. But I didn't stamp mine, I just smudged it along the edges of my tag. That's a MIX I missed, and never got round to watching the video but I'm surmising that's the basics of it.

Thanks Anita and Sabrina for sharing. After stamping for so many years and trying new techniques, I often fall into the thinking that I have tried it all, but there is always something new to learn. The technique that you are talking about Sabrina, I don't think I have tried that before, so maybe sometime soon. If you get the chance to look at this week's mix gallery check out Kittie's poinsettia card I have never tried the drops that she used for the berries, but now it is definitely on a to do list.

So what is your excuse for not doing mixed media?
Is it that it is too expensive?
Well, it is true that some supplies are expensive, but there are some that you might already have in your crafty stash or in your home that are cheap or free.
Do you have pens or markers?
On my snowman project if you look at the edges I used a pen to draw little lines around the edges that look like stitches.
After I freehand cut my coffee cup out I traced around the edges with a marker.

The cheapest materials on my project are the faux scrabble pieces and the snowman's arms. The scrabble piece were cut from a cereal box an the arms were die cut from a toilet paper roll.

What other cheap supplies could be mixed media? Any recycled paper, cardboard, found metallic items (like springs, washers, wire). Crayons, colored pencils, pens markers...

Don't let the excuse that it is too expensive stand in your way of making art.

My snowman was made as a sampler I tried to include lots of different mediums. I tried to get as many as I could on it.
The stamping that was done on it is the alphabet stamps on my faux scrabble tiles, the crackle background on my mixed media coffee cup and the coffee stains. The cup and the snowman including his nose and hat were all free hand drawn and fussy cut. The coffee cup paper was a page from an encyclopedia that I took white acrylic paint and painted smears of paint to cover some of the words. Then I watercolored the cup with blue and teal water color paint. I then stamped a crackled background stamp with blue ink on top of that. Then I free hand cut out the cup and outlined it with a sharpie marker. I then stamped the whole cup with my versamark ink pad and embossed with UTEE and then I fussy cut it out. I cut the cup at the top so that my snowman could slide into the cup.
The snowman was fussy cut and dry embossed on white cardstock. I went over the embossed areas with distressed antique linen ink. The eyes were punched out of black cardstock. The nose was free hand cut and I used white colored pencils to make circular lines on it. The hat was free hand cut from black cardstock. I used gold metallic rub on hat as well as die cut leaves and little berries made from flower stamens that I colored with a red sharpie marker. The buttons on my snowman were little pearls that I colored black with a black sharpie. The arms were die cut from toilet paper rolls. The faux scrabble tiles were cut from a box. I stamped the letters using black stazon ink. I took a black pen and drew little stitched lines around the edges. I added glitter and pearls to the punched out snowflakes. I added brads, and two types of twine.

What excuses have you been using to keep you from trying mixed media?

Mixed media is too challenging.
I have some questions for you.
Do you just stamp the image on your paper and do nothing else?
Do you sometimes color the images or add embellishments?
Mixed media could be as easy as stamping your image using ink(one medium) and then coloring it with markers (another medium) or colored pencils (another medium) or watercoloring (another medium).
Mixed media could be adding ribbon (a textile medium) or brads (a metallic medium) or bling... well you get the idea.
I bet you are already doing mixed media and didn't even realize it.

Thanks Kandie for playing along. I hope that others will get past their excuses and create and play along with us.

Is your excuse...IT IS TOO MESSY.

Well, you are right that some mediums are messy, but there are plenty that are not any messier than what you are used to when you stamp.

What I consider to be some of the less messy mediums are:
colored pencils
markers
textiles, like lace, twine, ribbon, cheesecloth, burlap...
metals, like brads, or eyelets or found items like washers, or wire

embossing powder and glitter are a little messy but worth the mess
another slightly messy medium is watercoloring, but if you cover your area with a piece of paper it shouldn't make too much of a mess

some paints, sprays, texture pastes...can be messy, but they are still fun to play with.

You have no excuse to not join us and play today.

Since no one has posted an excuse... ahem... there should be more mixed media cards today... Seriously sometimes we just need the encouragement of a friend. What questions or concerns or excuses do you have? Share them and I will try to help.

Thanks Melody for playing along.

Maybe your excuse for not doing a mixed media card yesterday when I first posted was that you were too busy to do it with Christmas coming and all that needs to be done. Mixed media can be time consuming with some of the techniques ( especially the ones that require wait time for things to dry) But it doesn't have to take a long time.

If you use ink(1 medium) to stamp your image, and then use markers(2nd medium) to color the image and then add ribbon (3rd medium) then you have created a mixed media card.

What is your excuse for not making a mixed media card?
