Cool why do you need to have names for your stamps?

I've always been confused by people who are asking the names of stamp sets they own. Is this just for people who sell or get published? I'm hoping it's not like tearing the tag off the mattress because I can't have the card police show up.

I think sometimes people want to know the names of their stamp sets because they want to re-sell that particular stamp set. Knowing the name helps to sell it sometimes.

Also some may want to know the name of their stamp set because they want to look it up and see what other people's cards look like using that particular set.

If it is a Stampin' Up! set and they are uploading to the gallery here, they will need to know the name of the set so they can put the card in the right category.

I have never tried it, but I do think it is a must to know stamp set names when you are submitting to magazines.

Anyway I hope this answers your questions somewhat. It will be interesting to see what other say about it!

When you buy a stamp set, it has a name, I would like to know that name

And it's not just stamp sets people need to know the name of. I was recently asked the name of a die I used for my project too.

A lot of times it is because someone wants to CASE a card - or part of it - and wants to do it with EXACTLY the same "stuff". I have a friend who does that... I like to know the names of the sets - or at least the manufacturer - so I can see what other things they might offer that I would be interested in, and because I have all of my stamps stored alphabetically. And yes - you pretty much do need to know where all of your supplies came from to submit something for publishing. You can get away with "buttons from my stash", but not "stamp from my stash", kwim? If you're just posting to your blog (or even here), it's helpful to folks, but not required...

I never cared about stamp set names until I posted photos of my cards here on SCS. Then I wanted to fill out the information fields, and there's one for the stamps used... so I started noting the stamp set names.

Yeah - I have a lot of single stamps (as opposed to sets) that don't have names, so I just list who made them, too. Thanks for offering that alternative...

It's nice to list what you can. I'll see a card and want to buy the stamps or the die. It makes them easier to find. My problem is trying to remember where most of my unmounted stamps came from.

What I've done (sometimes successfully, sometimes not so much) to figure out where an unidentified stamp came from is to do an image search. Type "bistro table rubber stamp", for example, in the search box (I like Yahoo for images) and see if any of the results match your stamp. If you click on the image, it usually takes you to more information (like a website where you can purchase it or a blog that shows it in action).

When I was a SU demo I would list the name of the card used in my project so people could recreate the project. So for that reason it is helpful, both for demos and for people that aren't demos so that others can see a project and know which set was used to create it.

Because I'm OCD and have to have a name for everything. There. I said it. ;)

That's why I get frustrated with my old PSX stamps...they only have numbers. Aaaarrrrggggh!

It's funny, because I don't have too much in the way of guilt feelings if I only list the stamp company in my descriptions.

Ah, Diane - you make me laugh! I have a friend who is TOTALLY OCD - has to have all of the cans in her pantry with the labels facing forward, can't put other stamps in the same place as SU! stamps, etc. She can never remember what she has, though, because she has some of it upstairs and some of it downstairs (that mixing taboo again). You, on the other hand, have everything labeled and organized and I'm sure you know where all (or at least most) of it is! I get annoyed when there are only numbers, as well, or - like the Studio 112 stamps I just bought - say "such and such collection", instead of having unique identifiers for each set in that collection...

Also, if you blog, its nice to be able to list the supplies used. Many times I've seen a stamp used, and really wanted it, then its hard if you don't know the maker/number/name of it.

You mean I shouldn't do that with my cans?

I have some that have names and others don't. I don't normally care about the names unless someone wants to know what I used.

You have to admit that at least I don't have a problem mixing up my stamps! Or breaking up sets!

But they have to be exactly right when it comes to what goes with what by style.

Now I refuse to tell anybody how I have my sets categorized. You'd know too much about me! ;)

I don't usually care about the name of a stamp unless I see it used in a card and then I want to buy it. I care more about the company and then I can search the site for the stamp. Also, I don't record the stamp name in my stamp index.

It's funny that when I first started stamping I was amazed that my sisters could look at a stamp and name the company. I kept thinking, good grief, how can they do that. Now, I get it and it wasn't long before I could do it. When I like a company's style I think more about the company name than stamp name. I have several stamps that have the same name but it's the company's style that sets them apart.
