I'd have to say that it helps to have things easily accessible -- not just for the using but for the putting away. I am in the process of redoing my space, which is about 8 feet X 6 feet of our 11 feet X 15 feet finished basement that shares with a "hang out space" for my 13 year old DD. My storage system is not as fancy (or beautiful) as babydal57's but, like hers, everything is labeled and mostly one layer -- meaning I don't have to unstack or reach behind things to get at what I want. I had a table that was 3 feet wide and 8 feet long and, because of my limited space, I had a lot of things stacked under the table. Because it was hard to get to, I didn't use those things and, if I did, was less likely to climb back under the table to put them away. My table was always a hot mess. I now have shallow shelving floor to ceiling along the 8 foot wall (only about 14 inches deep) and a table 18 inches deep and 7 feet long (made by my sweet hubby) from 2 filing cabinets and 1/2 of a bi-fold door) opposite the shelves. That leaves me just over three feet to roll back and forth along the desk and am able to easily access the shelves behind me to grab what I need and (so importantly!!) put it away. I'd love to have another surface where I could just have the 'Bug and the Xyron and the Sizzix lined up and ready to go, but I love more that my DD still like to hang out with me down there, so it's a happy compromise. This is at least the 4th time I have reorganized and it gets a little better and more streamlined each time I do. You might need a couple of tries before you get it just right for you. Good luck!
I'm a spread it all out stamper, so I have to have lots of surfaces to work at. My main desk is 2 - 30"x60" tables pushed back to back (so a 60" square work area) and another 30"x60" table on one side that holds my Cricut and sewing machine.
I like to keep all my embellies so that I can see them, otherwise they don't get used.
As much natural light as possible....my room has 4 large windows.
Room for friends to stamp with you. And maybe even a comfy couch for them to hang out on between cards.
An inspiration wall where you can hang your favorite projects, or cards sent to you by friends.
A dry erase board to write down deadlines.
A safe place to stash a drink, so you don't risk knocking over Diet Coke onto the card you just finished.
I was inspired by kmahany'r room...It has bee 2 weeks and I am getting a little frustrated but I had to paint 2 other rooms in the move around the loft...here is where I am right now:
And here is where I got my idea...I will be there by Halloween!
I need a pretty room to inspire me...and a big old drafting table I found in the neighbor's move out trash pile!!
I REALLY like having a separate, tall table where I keep my guillotine-style cutter,scor-pal, and big shot sitting out all the time. When I need to use them I just walk over (sounds impressive but it is literally two steps from my desk here) and cut, score, and die cut whatever I need. Then I move back to my desk for the rest. It's a tall table so I just stand and do the job. I do have two stools underneath so if I need a little more room for a friend I have that option too.
I also have a separate table for my Tonic cutter, Scor Pal and Cuttlebug and another area where I do everything else. It really is convenient! I just swirl my chair around and there it is.
I like having everything "close". I moved a few months ago and have set up a third bedroom as my craft space. It is small, so organization was key. I spent several hours (several times) at IKEA to see what would work best. I bought a sideboard that has good storage and I use the top as my cutting station (papercutter, scor-pal, big shot). I bought a small kitchen island to be my desk. I like having a large work surface and it also has shelves on the front. I bought the medium size cubby shelf and it holds LOTS. I also have two of the Alex cabinets that I totally love. I will attach some pics to give you some ideas. Hope they give you some ideas. I'm sure that you will get lots of great ideas from the gals here.
Thanks to everyone - great, helpful ideas - still trying to put this all together - have done several floor plans and will continue to play with this for a short time, (daughter has moved out but still has some things in the room)
Thanks again - still taking ideas -- what is the one thing you couldn't work without ???
Gerry :-D

Funny - luckily I have high ceilings so the fan doesn't reach the glitter, but before the ceiling fan I had a small desk fan and I didn't know that glitter could travel so far.... hehehe...
Thanks for all your imput ladies -- everyone has such great ideas - not sure where I am going with this yet - hoping I can get it right the first time {LOL}
Thanks again, g

Great lighting is a must. Long nice tables to work on and places where your pets can sleep that is not on your ink pads, Scor-it, opened glitter jars. A place where you can easily access clean up supplies so you can clean up the pets.
LOL, points taken :-D
