I've recently been giving my studio a makeover. My husband will tell you it's at least the 20th time in 3 years that I'm redoing my space. He's probably right. I keep telling him it's a work in progress, so get used to it LOL
I'm lovin' my new worktable though. The neat part about this type of table is, YOU can have one too! It's so great, and really affordable. I repurposed things I already owned and the things I didn't already have could be picked up at a refit store for cheap cheap.
I have other views in my gallery if you want to see all sides. Maybe you'll be inspired to make one of your own like I was!

You are so talented! It looks tall and the top looks wide. Is this the camera angle or is it really tall and wide? I would love to have a taller and wider workspace!! The wheels are turning now. TFS!
It is 4' deep x 8' wide x 3'9" tall. So yes, tall and wide is a good way to describe it. I find it a bit tall even for me and 5'8" so I have a stool I stand on sometimes, depending what I'm doing, but I also have a draftsman chair for when I'm feeling lazy.
If I took one row of cubes away, it would have been too low at 30". Too low for even the average height person.
As for the dark surface on top . . . that is a 3' x 6' piece of tempered 1/4" glass that I picked up for a song several years ago. It weighs a ton! The cubes beneath it are nice and stable. I love having the glass work surface because I use my knives a lot, so it saves me having to find my teeny tiny 8 1/2" x 11" glass cutting matt. It's also great when cutting larger items such as, oh . . . say . . . foam board perhaps?

Instead of plywood + arborite for the table top, you could also buy 4' x 8' sheets of melamine-covered waferboard. It's the same thickness and you can also get iron-one melamine tape to finish the edges. Great room re-do! I clicked over to your blog and read all about it...
Thanks for the dimensions. I like to stand alot when I stamp and have found it uncomfortable to bend over my desk. It's just too low. The height of your desktop seems about right. I've
also got a stool that can be adjusted. I really like your idea ( I guess you couldn't tell, LOL)!
I've seen something similar on Pinterest, except without the height, which isn't quite as elaborate but functional and economical. The blog has great pictures and an easy tutorial. This unit cost her $114 for the main parts. I think it is genius!! If I ever have a room where I can have an island workstation like this, this will be on my wish list.
Materials:
2 hollow core doors (mine were from Home Depot for $25 each)
4 shelving units (mine were from WalMart for $16 each)
Primer and paint of your choice
Polyacrylic
4 large L-brackets and matching screws

Yep, I mentioned her in my gallery because she was the inspiration for my worktable. :p
Wow! I just went and looked in your gallery and the one picture you posted here doesn't do that unit justice :-) I also liked the step storage item made out of foam board.

Great table! I did something similar when I moved into our house 4.5 years ago. I took a table top that my office was throwing away that is about 7 feet long and 4 feet deep. I bought two desk legs w/storage from Ikea and that is my desk and work area. Have loved it since I made it! I can papercraft, sew, work, etc. all on this one top.
I love your work table. I completely get your height on the table. I suffered a back injury, so hunching over a desk is too much. I bought a bar set for my tiny kitchen. I use it so much. I can stand at it, or sit on the stool. Glass would be too heavy for me, so I have the largest quilter's cutting mats I could find. I use the back for painting and the front for cutting. They are made for sewers, so they tile together and I can nearly cover my whole floor with them.
Wow, I love the island desk! I'd never be able to have one because my little room is much too small. I especially love the glass top! I get so tired of bringing out my 12"x12" glass mat every time I want to use my circle cutter or X-acto blade.
