I have about 70 or so folders, and I don't label them. I just store them in a shoebox, and flip through it when I'm looking for something.

I do like the idea of making an impression of each one and putting them in a binder for further reference.

I just bit the bullet and used a 50% off coupon to get the binder for the 5 x7s at AC Moore-I was so shocked to even see it there. I got that size since I can always put the smaller ones in there too. We'll see how it works.

I also went and labeled them all with the Ptouch after reading here. Often that label is where there isnt a pattern if possible but I cant see how that could cause a shimming effect. We'll see on that too I guess.

I ran my embossing folders through my BigKick machine using cheap construction paper. Next I put the each folder in a zip-type plastic bag (lunch size works for most) with the corresponding embossed construction paper then punched a hole in the top of the bag. By using the back of the bag as the front and placing the construction paper in the bag facing out, there is no print to interfere with seeing what folder is in the bag. I then hung my embossing folders in catagories (i.e. florals, sentiments, etc.) on pegboard hooks. If you would use good cardstock and sand your embossing it would be even easier to see what you have in a glance.
