I tend to go with Rox's tag line: "Creative clutter is better than idle neatness"
Having said that, when clutter moves on over into chaos that's a whole different ball o' wax, that is!
Having put almost three years' distance between myself and the tiny apartment guest room that was my workroom/craftroom/sewing room for a while, I'm okay with showing you what it looked like post-Christmas back then (I sew and do upholstery for a living, so that's why there's not just "normal" crafty clutter here...)
Can I just have one or two pixies, and send the rest back, please? ;)
ok now you have to tell me about that great long white shelf. is it foamcore? or wood/ i love it.
the best in the photo is the keyboard up & out of the way. too cute
It's the steel supporting girder in my attic - an I beam, I guess. There's another one along the back wall, full of ATCs from end to end, a wonderful way of displaying them.
I got a stand for my monitor way back years ago when it was too low on my desk for good ergonomics; it has two little arms that come out and make a cradle to prop up the keyboard, and it really is useful! Plus there's a drawer under the monitor where I keep things like my book of passwords, Crop-a-Dile, every-day sentiment sets and all the little corner punches.
Oh - and I loved the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics post. It sent me on a scientific musical trail through Flanders and Swann's First and Second Law to Tom Lehrer's The Elements, and made me laugh too when I read it.
Wow. So glad this is a problem for others. The reason I have for keeping things messy while making a card is: I may need that die again, if I change my mind about the color I've used. Or I might mess up on the stamping and have to stamp a new one. Or--I might decide that a different color or hue will be better with this image or card. Or--maybe this one needs brown ribbon instead of pink---etc. If you put it all away before you finish, you may have to go get it out again. Now, where did the top of the pen and the little white top of the glue bottle go?? Those darn elves are here again!!
:p now i just wanna see pix of messy desks after a project lol...my scrap widow (aka : my DF David) can't seem to ask me why i don't clean up after a project.......welll D'UH i'm not done yet
Here is my scraproom in all its glory and messy craziness... It is not as messy as one of the first photos but not a clean as the last...
I tidied yesterday. Today this is what my desk looks like - I used it for the photo challenge this week which was the letter C - my take was Chaos ;) Forums at Splitcoaststampers
It's the second photo in the thread.
It almost looks like my desk!! I keep thinking something bigger to work on, then realize that it will just be a BIGGER mess. Am I crazy for wanting to move into the bigger spare room and make a bigger desk? I would love to invite someone over to stamp but my house is CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and my stamproom is WORSE.
For sure the mess would expand to fit the bigger space, Betty, that's a given. It's a version of Parkinson's Law about work expanding to fit the time available for completion.
I like that CHAOS acronym. I keep downstairs tidy enough for the Having Anyone Over, but my attic is a different matter .
If I did not spend so much time searching for lost items I could have my millionth card made by now!

I'm envious of those who have a room! My clutter is on the dining table, which also serves as my "office" as a teacher. Sigh. I hear the trick is "everything in it's place," which would probably work if I had a place for everything!
I hope my membership in the new "don't buy anything in 2011 support group" helps. As I use what I already have, it may start to fall into some semblance of order ;-). Hope springs eternal.
What!!? Only the desk! That's amazing!! My whole Craft Room explodes! Last night I knocked over a canister of glitter on my desk (oh joy!!) and now that seems to have spread to the rest of the house!:lol:
OMG!! I can SOOOO relate!! Someone sent me a 4 pack of glitter in a swap. Well of course I had to open it! and now I have three containers, glitter all over my coffee table (which I will have to remove the glass and take it out in the freezing cold to wash which is why it is still there) and no idea where (or in what condition the 4th container is and my cats are walking around suspiciously sparkly! >^,,^
I am the only person I know who can sit in one place and not move from that spot and lose everything. My scissors, my bone folder, my paper, the stamp I'm stamping with - absolutely everything. Sometimes I manage to laugh at myself but usually I just get frustrated that I end up spending more time looking for stuff than I do making my card.
Oh, no you are not!! I even lost my pill this morning sitting at my desk with it in my hand!! The frustrating thing is I KNOW the items I "lose" are RIGHT THERE!! They have to be, I never moved!!
Wow! You know we all hate you now LOL! ;) You can't even see my floor!!!
LOL... Believe me it is not always clean, maybe 5% of the time. I still have a couple large boxes from christmas beside me. My new cricut is on an old printer stand in the middle of the floor. A basket of towels that needs to be taken upstairs and folded. A very large shopping bag of SU stamps I'm going to sell at a yard sale. Yes, I can see the floor but these large obsticles are taking over.
This happens to me all the time. It seems like no matter how much I clean as I go - by the time I've finished my card my craft room looks like a tornado has been through it.

Nice to meet you! LOL! I am the same way. It is as if things vanish in thin air!
THIS IS A FUN thread to follow!!! You ladies are REALLY GOOD AT FUNNY!!!! (MAYBE, someone should come up with a line of stamps on this!!!! LOL)
I've found I have the VOLCANO at my house too, BUT now I have 3 kitties that have discovered my desk AGAIN!!! ( We moved it just before Christmas.) I ALMOST lost a whole set of stamps in the trash last week; they knocked it off without my knowing it! Thank goodness, I made a card & couldn't find it! (One of those sets you leave out, to use frequently!) My husband, BLESS HIM ran down to the trash bin & got the bag of trash so we could go through it & SURE ENOUGH, there they were!!! They'll carry off ANYTHING left out!!! SO NOW, I HAVE TO be neat so I won't loose anything!!!! Everything put in a CLOSED drawer!!!!! (Yep, they'll pull things right out of the drawer!!! )
I HAVE TO ADD: AT TIMES, it's hard to find things after rearranging!!!!! I keep finding myself going to the other room, where I was located before, to find things!!!! SIGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice to meet you! LOL! I am the same way. It is as if things vanish in thin air!
I swear there is a poltergiest in my room that takes things off my table or out of my hands and hides it! These afore mentioned THINGS, always re-appear as soon as I've given up looking and and have replaced it!! It is especially frustrating when it is something like an image that has taken me forever to color and cut out!!! Oh well. Then I always make a second card that goes in my stash for when an occasion to use it pops up!!

So I take it my craft room isn't the only one that if someone doesn't know where something goes it's "Let's put it in Mom's room". I have so much crap in there I don't know what to do with that doesn't have a 'home'. I have resolved to start THROWING. Watch out Waste Management, mine's going to be overflowing for a while!
Well I know gremlins are running around in my craft room! We had to clean up our work tables because of a leak RIGHT OVER MINE! Water everywhere (we had the monsoons here in southern California). So, I have been sick for the past 10 days and a week before that taking care of my husband who was sick. I finally had enough energy to design a wedding thank you note and someone else got in there with me and messed up waaay more than I actually used! Left drawers open, cabinet doors ajar and such a mess on my work surface that you can't see most of it! Sigh - I guess that was me! I think I was born a messy! I love this thread and the great sense of humor brought out. Have a great 2011 happily making a huge mess in your craft areas!

Same here. The number of things that hide out in the open in full view is worrying.
(as in, I know I looked all over for it and it was in the middle of the desk staring at me all the time).

let me introduce my self...as I thought I was the only one! lol
You ladies have made my day reading all your answers to this profound question. I went from digi to traditional/hybrid and now my space looks like it should receive federal disaster funding - not to mention I had to give up take-out lunch to pay for all the stuff. It has been the best thing I've done to enhance my health. I think the healthier I've become, the more DISorganized my space became.
I spent an evening scrapping with a friend who is very organized and when we were finished she was exhausted from trying to keep cleaning and organizing things behind me. I haven't gotten another invitation ( And she wants to come to see all my toys and stuff, and I keep warning her that she'll need a hard hat and steel toed shoes to enter - my homeowner insurance will not cover her heart attack:p
I don't even think FlyLady declutter techniques can rehabilitate me. Now I can get on to digging a space on my craft table to make another card and maybe a LO.

Oh Sue thank you for sharing your pictures - I haven't gotten to that point where I can share this experience - but seeing your pictures have eliminated a whole lot of guilt! I tell you this place is so therapeutic!!!!!
WOW, am so glad there are so many of us dis-organized people out there.
I have found that when I clean up I spend more time looking where I put things. I have long table and by the time everything is on the table I find my workspace ever so small--LOL
I find that whenever I work, I end up with a smaller and smaller work space. I start out with a very large table...by the time I am finished a project, I have about 6"x6" of space to work! How does that happen? Tonight, I decided to make a couple of cards using scraps that I have on my table. Used a lot, but now I have even more scraps, just in smaller sizes because I cut them down to use them! I think I am down to about 4"x4" now!!!!
