I was just wondering if any of you had creative ideas on how to store buttons. I like the look of them sitting out (rather than in drawers) but I have very limited table space. I thought of putting them in little jelly jars, but I didn't know if there were any better ideas out there. Also, I wanted to sort them, rather than putting them into one big jar. I know that's a pretty tall order, so really any ideas you have - whether it is putting them in drawers, or something else - would be appreciated. TIA, and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!

I store my PTI buttons in these cute little plastic containers I get at the 100 Yen store (Okinawa version of the dollar store but MUCH BETTER!) They come in a pack of three for only a buck and a bag of PTI buttons fits PERFECTLY! *sorry for the crappy picture!*
I use one of the containers for beads from walmart. dont have a big collection of buttons but this works for me ;)
limited on space as well, i would love jars but where would i put them all.
I keep my buttons in jars in a spice rack. I've gotten 2 of them from garage sales over the past summer.
Here is a link to a similar rack, just to get a better idea. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ct_id=11924229

OH MAN, Amber!! I just got rid of a spice rack like that when I moved recently....not even thinking of how I could use it for my stamp/scrap stuff!!!! Bummer!
I started using cropper hopper embellishment boxes:
I found some cute spice jars at Cost Plus World Market... four glass jars for about $4.00. What I like about them is that you can tilt them on their sides (like the old-fashioned candy jars) or have them sit upright.
I recycled spice jars that I emptied. Sorted each color or two colors into one jar. Then put them on a shelf in my studio. I find I use them more now that they're out AND sorted.

I use a bead organizer as well. There is no room in my house for a crafting room, unfortunately, so everything has to fit in my rolly tote. It works great =)
I keep them in jars too and sorted on color but if you are limited in space you can even use old jam jars and nail (or screw) the lids on the bottom of a shelf. So the jars will be hanging underneath your shelf.
Talk about total use of space! ;)
I did a search for a pic but was not able to find it. If I do I will post it.
I store mine in Harbor Freight boxes - they aren't cute but they are functional. I store my little flowers in spice jars from Ikea and my skittle in spice jars from World Market and they would work for buttons, but they will take up space. I also like the jam jars from Speciality Bottle. They are more compact since they have square edges and can fit close together. you can see the various jars here
Stamphappy... I am LOVIN' your space! When can I move in? Where do you get the Harbor Freight boxes? I'm on the east coast so maybe it's something only you west coast girls get? Wish we had a World Market as well.

I keep my buttons in the square tubes that Papertrey Ink sells -- you can get them in larger quantities (and cheaper) at sks bottle co (you probably want to find someone or two to do a share) and then I made one of the Timeless Templatess -- the desktop organizer. It fits 10 tubes PERFECTLY, and takes up hardly any space. you can double up the template (back to back) for 20 colors - or you can line them up end to end. Doesn't take up much space at all.
I can't access my blog here - but I'll link to my post later, so you can see it...

Glad you like my space, sometimes I spend so much time in here that I wonder if I really need the rest of the house (LOL). If you were nearby you come by and play.

Awe thanks! Yeah, I love it....I've slowed down on my button purchases, (which I know will kill me, since it'll take forver, and a small fortune to catch up - lol) but I'll need to make another one soon
I actually do use jelly jars for my buttons. My daughter takes PB&J to school in her lunch every single day, so I get plenty of jars for no additional cost. The ones I have are from Polaner All-Fruit, which are 10 ounce jars. A bag of PTI buttons fills a jar about 2/3 full.

2 things --
First - I love your button storage -- great way to re-use! they look nice and neat perched up there!
Second -- I'm SO glad to hear your DD takes PB&J for lunch everyday - as I feel like the people at my DD's school must wonder if she eats anything other than chicken nuggets and Elio's pizza - lol. Nice to know there are other kids out there that do the same thing
I use these storage containers (I have no idea what they are called) I purchased from a Home Depot. They are plastic and see-thru, you have dividers you put in to make each section the size of your choice. They are similiar to a something men could use to store nails or fishing hooks and plasic flys, worms ect. I have 8 of them, I store everything from buttons, brads, eyelets, some ribbon, Embossing powder (only the small try me sizes 1/8oz, I purchased when I first started, the regular sizes fit, but not that many), metal embellishments, fabric adhestive words and designs and flowers. Each box is labled for use, makes it easy to keep organized and looks neat. I think it is the only part of my craft room that is organized.
I pick up old canning jars the ones with the metal flippy things over the glass lids at yard sales... ( if you get the wide mouth ones you can dig your whole hand inside the jars and just play ) *sigh* mmmm, (these work super for prima flowers too)
Walmart sells a bunch of different size jars in their kitchen section. I use the smallest ones for buttons and they cost about $1.50 each. Since I've had 2 kids who went through the baby food phase in the past couple of years, I've reused both the glass and plastic baby food containers. If you know any Momma's of small kids, check and see if they are keeping their containers or tossing them!

You folks who used baby food jars, jelly jars, Salsa jars, etc. - HOW did you get the smell out of the lids? I dried soaking them in vinegar, keeping them in an air tight container with crumpled up newspaper, running them through the dishwasher - NOTHING worked! And I REALLY don't want my buttons smelling like baby food, LOL.
You might try soaking them in a bleach solution. I haven't had problems with the baby food jar lids smelling, but sometimes other items. I think it has to do with whether there is any rubber in the lid, as it seems to hold onto smells longer. You could also try running the lids through the dishwasher with some of that special "Plastic" detergent that gets stains off Rubbermaid, etc. This usually works for me! Good luck!

This is what I use for my buttons....looks really cool on my shelf! Each compartment is a different color and makes it easy to see what I have without dumping everything out! Used my coupon and got it for $5.00.

I buy that kind of jam. I've just been tossing them in the recycle bin. Silly me!

I got spice jars from the Goodwill and then later found a spice rack for them. I put each
color in individual bottles then put a strip of that color cardstock around the lid after I
cut it with a Martha Stewart edge punch so it would look decorative. I put heart buttons
and shapes into different bottles as well. I love reaching for buttons now.
I used the empty bottles from the Starbucks coffe drinks. Have one for each color and spray painted the lids white. Then I used a piece of Rick rack to match the color of the buttons inside and glued that around the edge of the bottle cap. Finally, I found a large button from each color that was the diameter of the cap and glued that to the top of the cap. They look great, I've gotten lots of compliments, and I can see at a glance what I've got! I got the bottles from a gal at work who drinks 1-2 of those coffee drinks everyday.
