what is the differance between these prismacolor pencils and su's watercolor pencils.
Since we don't know the manufacturer of SU's pencils, this is a generalization. But usually W/C pencils are not wax based the way regular colored pencils are, but the pigment is suspended in some other medium that can work with water. Prismacolor makes excellent wax based colored pencils and they are used without water for fine art colored pencil work, and they blend beautifully with stumps, blending pencils, etc. I'm guessing, but think that SU's "pure color pencils" and "metallic pencils" are probably closer to the wax-based type of pencil and might also work with the techniques listed for the Prismacolor pencils.
the talent showcased on this website is matched only by the amazing generosity i've seen displayed. i add my thanks for sharing your hard work and very useful tool!
Using fionna51's chart, I filled in all the spots with a sample of cardstock, a swath of marker and a scribble of the matching Prismacolor pencil. I've posted it to my gallery. This is going to be SUCH a fabulous tool!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! I was just wondering which prismacolors would match the SU colors and lo and behold found your post.
What a wonderful thing that you have done not only for yourself but for all the rest of us. What a time saver, also. Bless your heart.
A BIG TFS.

What a lifesaver you are! Thank you so much for doing this!
Hey, will you be doing the 6 new colors?
Also, just to let you know, Prismacolor's website www.sanfordcorp.com has the colors with numbers listed. It is listed under the Premier section. They also have a 132 collection of colors. I only have the 120.

Fiona51 thanks so for doing so much work... this is such an awsome list....
MoberKitty you have a great idea... did you punch or just cut out the little square of SU cardstock??? That is a great idea to match it all...
I have a question also... The stumps that everyone is talking about, are those the pencils that come w/the prismacolors pencils? the clear blending pencils??? or are they something different???

Thanks!! I used the SU! 1/4" punch on my cardstock scraps. Then I ran all the tiny squares through my Xyron 150 so I didn't have to try and put mono on each square. ugh
I'm sure if you do a search in the forums for 'stumps' you'll find a link to photos of them. They are rolled, felted paper that you dip in the gamsol (or odorless mineral spirits) to blend the prismacolor pencils.

Prismacolor are great, but be careful when you buy them make sure that the lead is perfectly centered or they will break alot, I know because beside stamping I am an artist, and I not only do watercolours but I do colored pencil work, to get a beautiful blend of colors you can use a colorless blender or use a little rubber cement remover and a Q-Tip, (this is best done outside or in a well ventilated room) this will give your colors a depth to them. I watch for sales at art stores, that is the best time to buy.
Moberkitty had an excellent comment on the chart she made and put all the colors in, and it has to do with dye lots on the paper. Since there is variation from batch to batch in the color of the paper, you may find that a different color matches a touch better. HOWEVER, only the super-AR of us really will worry about that. Prismas do have some colors that are lighter or darker shades of the same hue and many times one or another will work equally well.
BTW, I really appreciate all your enthusiasm over this chart! I was just doing it for myself and wanted to share with all of you, save someone else the frustration of it all!
Okay, maybe I'm missing something here ... are these Prismas you are talking about the WAX type, or the WATERCOLOR type?
I see you use Gamsol (which I don't have, and can't find), so I imagine these are wax-based. If so, can you use the gamsol technique on the SU! metallic pencils?
I'm pretty much a marker & aquapainter girl myself. Thanks for any help. Tish
Thank you so very much for your hard work. I really appreciate it. I'm headed over to the Dick Blick web site, right now, to order the pencils I don't have. TFS

Well, I finally got my In Color paper...and several people have asked for PC pencil colors for the retired colors...So, here goes. Take notice of the colors that are similar...
Cranberry Crisp--close to Bravo Burgundy but lighter, and a little more red. I am going to use 925 crimson lake, but 937 tuscan red will also do (the Bravo Burgundy color).
Marigold Morning--Close to More Mustard, but a bit lighter, and pinker. I am going to use 942 yellow ochre but you can use1034 goldenrod (More Mustard color) too.
True Thyme--like Mellow Moss, but lots darker. I am using 988 marine green, which was dark for Mellow Moss but the right tint.
Cool Caribbean--992 light aqua.
Buckaroo Blue--darker than Bordering Blue. You could use the 936 slate gray or go to 901 indigo blue which is a bit dark.
Vintage Violet--best match is 1042 metallic violet, but that is no longer available. You could use 1007 imperial violet (same as Lovely Lilac) or 933 violet blue which is a bit bluer.
As for the retired colors:
Eggplant Envy--1078 black cherry
Baroque Burgundy--same as Bravo Burgundy, 937 tuscan red
Forest Foliage--917 peacock green
Rose Romance--929 pink
Positively Pink--no good match
Bliss Blue--same as Bashful Blue, 1024 blue slate
Mint Melody--920 light green
Mauve Mist--no good match
Marvelous Magenta--same as Orchid Opulence, 934 lavender (this is why I was bummed that MM discontinued, it was the only color to work well with OO)
Thanks Diane
You are so kind to share this information with those of us who are totally *color challenged*! I can't wait to look at my Prisma inventory and add the new colors. We appreciate your work
I, too, just found this thread and am just getting started with Prisma pencils, Gamsol, etc...this will be amazingly helpful...so many thanks to those of you who are sooo diligent and have hearts to share!

Is there anyway to access a larger copy of MoberKitty's color chart??
Her chart is just the one on the first post in this thread...which she placed a paper sample, marker squiggle, and prismacolor squiggle in each square. You could make your own the same way! For that matter, I would add a small stamp too, so that I could have a sample of the stamp pad inks. You could even do a sample of the pastels....
Is there anyway to access a larger copy of MoberKitty's color chart??
If anyone is interested, I could try and email them a larger copy (probably larger file, too) of the scan. It's on my home computer.
If you'd like me to do this, please send me an email to: [email protected]
Diane...thank you so much for this chart. I know it was posted awhile back, but I just decided to get the Prismacolor Pencils and try this Gamsol Magic Method out. I also thank Doodah for helping me locate this thread. This SCS community is so helpful! :-) LM

I do want to make some comments on this collection of colors.
1. I have tried to match HUE as closely as is possible. Sometimes the TINT might vary. (in real english, the color is as close to right as can be found in my 146 colors, but it might be a little bit dark or light)
2. Unfortunately, some colors get discontinued by the makers of PC pencils. One that matters to us is PC1011 Deco Yellow. It has been discontinued, but is the only close match to Barely Banana. :( I left it on the chart. If you want to try to get close, try PC914 Cream with a little bit of PC915 Lemon Yellow on top of it and blend with the colorless blender. (PC1077)
Attached is a Word document for you to print and color little blotches of your Prismacolors into. Have fun--I did this chart several times before I got it all right! ;-)
This list is excellent! I bought 23 Prisma's at an open stock clearance sale at Dick Blick and I have 9 of the SU matching colors. I feel so lucky today! Thanks for making this list.
