Hi all,
I've seen some you-tubers using a whole roll of paper towel in their inking, painting, etc. I'm wondering why the whole roll at once versus a sheet at a time?
I saw that too! But I can't remember what video I was watching! I remember thinking, "that's weird, why is she using the whole roll like that"?? But didn't give it much thought afterwards.
Now, I'd say....maybe it's to avoid leaving any kind of "handprint" or "fingerprint" shapes. If using a single sheet of paper towel you could press too hard with your fingers and you would remove paint and water only in that spot leaving behind a "finger" shape. Using a whole roll gives you a large surface to work with, applying even pressure across the area. That's just a thought off the top of my head.
Maybe it's just a quirk of the artist...who knows? :-)
I use the whole roll. When I first saw someone do the mop up with the whole roll I was like DUH!! I just use it like a rag and since it is on a roll it is easy to just roll it across your surface for a quick mop up of wet media. It's quick, efficient, and when I need a cleaner piece I just rip the outer layer off. The way I work (quick, random) a couple of torn off pieces would not work as well. My fingers stay cleaner too.
Some people use the inked up roll for other projects, piece by piece, so while they're cleaning up they're also creating a bunch of paper they can use in other ways.
I think I heard somewhere that they use the roll of paper towels because it keeps the multiple inks from mixing. As you roll the paper towel roll over the inks, it absorbs the inks without "spreading" or mixing them more. If you swipe a paper towel over the paint, it's probable that you'd smear and maybe cause the colors to mix too much. Sounded reasonable to me.
I tried it after I saw it the first time and found that I use FAR fewer paper towels than if I'm tearing them off and throwing them away. The roll absorbs some and can be used a lot before you have to tear off a sheet. Plus the rolling is gentler than dabbing with a single towel and your finger.
Now, to take this a step further, do you think it's best to use cheap paper towels or top of the line? My faves are Viva and Bounty. I wonder if it makes a difference. And then, why not use higher quality TP?
Just wondering...too much time on my hands right now. Thanks

I buy whatever paper towels are on sale - with a coupon. Some are plain textured, some have patterns I haven't found any to be unsatisfactory.
All TP is made to break down when wet, so I'd say it wouldn't be very good to use for blotting.
Dyan Reavely has come to NC the last two years in October and done classes at Betty's in Greensboro. If my circumstances were different, I'd make the 3 hour drive, stay in a hotel for the weekend to taker her classes. Very reasonably prices and they look like a grand time.

Wow I have seen people using the roll too and assumed they were doing that just for the filming to save time and cut down on work. I assumed there would be so much wastage, so I have learnt
NEVER ASSUME
Learn something new everyday. Thanks
I think people started doing this after Dyan Reaveley began doing it in her videos and classes. (She is a hoot, by the way! I've taken 4 of her classes.) Personally, I don't like using the whole roll. It gets in my way, falls or rolls over things, and makes my hands and table a mess. I don't mind getting my hands dirty, but the paper towel roll gets gross. I prefer to rip a few sheets off at a time. It's all good, though, and you have to do whatever works for you.
Okay!! Thanks for that tip .... 'cuz the whole roll sort of gets in the way a little bit IMO!
I've seen Dyan teach in person and via video ... and she's not only a hoot, but totally unleashed & seemingly able to turn first-glance-'yuck' into "reallllyyyy? Wow!" ;)
I read somewhere that Viva is the brand to get because you can rely on it NOT having a pattern embedded in it. Those who roll say a patterned towel leaves its mark on the substrate. Like, the roll becomes a stamp when mopping up wet inks, etc. I tried it, and they are right. I like leaving a pattern sometimes, but I keep a roll of Viva handy when I don't. HTH! xoxo
VIVA is my favorite paper towel for anything. On sale at CVS this week, so I bought a whole package of 6 which I will hide from the family, cut in half and use for crafting.
