Default Who wants a "Like" button?

Is this something we could do Lydia?

At the risk of being Facebook-ish, I would love a "Like" button just to "like" a comment or even a photo.

I know that we should be commenting and I try to do just that but sometimes I just want to tell them I LIKE your comment or creation, on my way by!!!

Default "Like" button

I think this is a GREAT idea! Hope that our great people at SCS can implement this. I usually always comment when I take a look at something, but being able to hit a "like" button would be awesome. Just hope it wouldn't take away from commenting though!

I hope it doesn't cut down on comments either, especially in threads. I learn so much from other's comments. Just the fact that they "like" something wouldn't be too helpful sometimes.

I go to a crochet forum, and they have a buttom that says "the following users say thank you for this useful post" so folks can just click that. Sometimes a whole thread will be full of those responses, not actual comments.

So, maybe, I don't know if I would like a "like" button or not.

Another vote for a "like" button. People on Facebook comment even if there is a like button. sometimes I have no comment to leave, but I would love to just hit a like button to know someone's work or comment is appreciated!

I would definitely like a like a button in the gallery. Sometimes, I don't know what to say and don't want to add the pic to my favorites but would like to tell the creator that I like what I see!

Ah, yes, there's a big all-purpose forum over here and you have the possibility of adding a thank you to a post - there's just a thumbs up button you click, and then your name appears in a little box under the post along with all the other grateful people. I use it quite a lot, but not indiscriminately. It's a great space-saver!

Surely the Favourite button serves a similar function in the gallery, except that it's anonymous. But I'm not on Facebook, as Lydia knows ;), so maybe I'm just missing what the Like button is all about.

I tend to agree with those who are worried about comments. I am one who's never really cared about comments, but there are those who really treasure the comments. I think that will decrease more if you can just "like" something. I think favorites should be considered a "like".....If I didn't like it, I wouldn't be favoriting....

I'm not a very good commenter in the gallery but I have a bazillion favorites. So many that they can't possibly all be my favorites... well maybe they are. However, I the only thing a like button would change for me in the gallery is that it would set a higher standard to be my "favorite".

Do you mean that you would not favorite as many? Just "like" more? If you favorite, you can find them in your favorites. If you only "like" them, you may not be able to find them again?? Just wondering.

I would like to be able to acknowledge comments & posts in threads without making another post or comment myself. I would tend to use it that way rather than as a replacement for things I already do.

Yes there are large threads such as ways to make do and the Christmas and any tool/product advice thread that would probably be halved in size. However, many of those threads have developed little mini-communities, so that could be lost.

when I favorite, it's usually so I can CASE. Once I CASE, they can be removed from favorites. I go through favorites quite a bit.

I'm in the minority then. I'd rather not have a like button. If we put a Like button for people's posts here on SCS, it will turn a post into more of a popularity contest, rather than adding something useful to the conversation.

And I'd rather comment on a card then simply " like' it.

I have totally mixed feelings about this. There are times when it would be nice to add a "like" to something - sort of like an "amen, sistah!" - without going through all of the quote/reply hoopla, but I can see the points of a couple of the other issues brought up here. I don't know that SCS would necessarily turn into a popularity contest, but some of the "community" spirit could be lost, I suppose...

I'm one of those who appreciate when someone leaves a comment in addition to favoriting something I've uploaded to the gallery. I'm thrilled that you liked whatever-it-was, but what was it about whatever-it-was that you liked? I see that as helpful information as far as improving my work. On the other hand, it would be nice to see if I'm making things that people actually like, whether they comment or not. I know that I often like things but don't put them in my favorites unless there's an idea that I plan to use in the future. Like I said - I'm totally conflicted over here...

When I first joined SCS and uploaded cards I would be 4ft off the ground if someone left a comment and it would spur me on. :-D

I still love getting comments but it's not so much a need to be validated, just a warm and fuzzy. ;)

I try to comment on cards every day now and I like at least two a day more if I have time to search the recent uploads, I'm a bit worried that I would find it too easy to just hit the like button, :( I guess I could do both.

Cheers

Believe it or not, I think the administrators would have to make sure they aren't breaking some kind of copywrite law by adding a like button. It would be nice though.

I LOVE the idea of a LIKE button! I don't comment a lot because I'm usually in a hurry. I can't tell you how many times though, that I would loved to have just been able to click a button to back up a statement someone has already made. IMO I don't think it would stop those that already comment from commenting in the future.

I also mixed feelings about a "like" button. On one hand, it would be a quick way for people to acknowledge a card, and that would certainly give people who upload cards a boost - it will be a great feeling to see many "likes" on your work. The problem I see with it is that - as others have said - it would without a doubt cut down on comments, and comments serve three purposes, one of which a "like" button addresses (positive feedback) and two important ones that it would not:

1) You do learn from the comments you get on your work.

2) It's really good to see who comments on your work so you can thank them if you wish. Someone else said it - little communities emerge as people begin to respond to a comment by going to that person's gallery and commenting. It starts a back and forth. In the year I've been on the forum, I have countless times read posts bemoaning that SCS is not the same as it once was, that it used to be more of a community and now there are so many members that it has lost that. And I always think the same thing when someone posts this - that the way to get that experience back, even as big as SCS is, is to foster those smaller communities so that people feel connected to a group of people. The challenges do that. If you do a certain challenge all the time you are going to start to get to know the other people who do that challenge all the time. But not everyone does challenges. So another way to foster connections between members is through the back and forth of commenting.

The "like" button on Facebook does allow you to see who "liked" your work. But seeing someone's name on a list is not the same as reading even a short comment. It doesn't invite any back and forth.

Still, a like button would probably give many more people some sort of feedback when they upload, which is a good thing. It's hard to upload a card and have it just disappear into the void.

So, I don't know. Very mixed feelings. If it's there, I'll use it at times no doubt. But I'll feel like something was lost, because if it weren't I probably would have commented.

Yes, I know, a long post. But I just don't want to see SCS become more of what so many say it's becoming - too impersonal.

I don't think we need a like button, we could just add to a post. As for comments on gallery cards, I use the favorite button when I don't have time to comment. But I do enjoy reading comments left for me and I've had some fun leaving comments especially on whacky cards. I guess it is analogous to would you rather have an email that said thx or a beautiful handcrafted card that says Thank you sent for you to find in your mailbox?

I've always thought that seeing the number of people who have viewed my card is similar to a "like" button - it means they liked the thumbnail enough to look at the enlarged picture of the card. If one of my cards has 500 views, I figure more people liked it than one of my cards that only has 50 views!

I really appreciate the time people take to add a comment - it's nice to know what it is they like about a card. I'm worried there will be way fewer comments if there is a simple "like" button".

On the other hand, when I'm having a really busy day, a "like" button might encourage me to look at more cards in the gallery.

The "Favorite" button is what I use if there is a technique or an image I want to remember, or if it's a card I want to put in the weekly Favorites or CAS Favorites thread.

A "like" button would be awesome - especially when there is no time to type comments! However, reading the comments is awesome too!

I know it's great to leave and receive a comment - it's my preferred way BUT in this crazy hectic world - a 'Like' button at least gives the opportunity for giver and receiver to share a quick hug...my two cents worth

I, too, seem to be in the minority. I would not like a "like" button. I don't do Facebook, but I do know how much time a card takes to make and then go to the trouble of posting it, especially with the information that most attach. If you like something enough, a quick reply does not take so long. Let's stop for a minute (or actually less) and let others in our craft how much we like their work. It takes so little time and means so much. Your comment doesn't have to be more than a "Great Work" or "Wow" and I know I would rather see that than a quick "Like" button being clicked.

I agree with dmcg. I look at the cards and lots of times I don't have time to commit on all of the ones I like so it has to be really something before I will commet however a like button would be great
