I have done both. But I do prefer to print it out on a piece of white cardstock and use that as a template this way I have no lines or marks on my finished item.
I also print on white cardstock - usually GP because it is so cheap - and then keep the template for future use. I use a paper cutter and scor-pal, so I make small dashes at the end of the page where I need to cut, and a little dash where I need to score, that way there are not a lot of lines to erase, just a few small dashes. I do like the idea of using my stylus to emboss instead of trace like Stamphappy said - I will have to try that.
