Ooh, good question!
I love word dies (with the shadow layer behind) and background dies. If I have to pick one, Pinkfresh sells a background die called 'sparkling diamonds' that imprints a nice pattern. (Actually, it's easier to show you than describe it... see it HERE)

Yes! I forgot about all those beautiful background dies!
My favorite die set is My Favorite Things Die-namics Dies Wonky Stitched Rectangle. I reach for it all the time when I'm cutting out sentiments. I just love how it looks.

I use the “Around the Bend” dies as a stand alone since I didn’t purchase the coordinating stamp set! It makes wonderful borders on card fronts as well as embossed die cut flowers and leaves. Like many others, I like all the frame dies that have stitching or another decorative edge.
I'm not a huge die fan, but I do love those geometric dies of all shapes---circles, ovals, curves, hexagons, etc. that are difficult to cut by hand. I also use leafy, fern and the occasional butterfly. Most I forget to use anything else.
I'd have to choose a nested lace circle die I just got recently. I love the lacy patterns it makes. Sometimes I just sit and look at the beauty of the cut out circles. I've only used it on a card once, but I mainly just like looking at it, lol.

I absolutely LOVE the strip dies from Pink Fresh Studio. I can never cut narrow strips evenly no matter what cutting method I use, so I love the dies to make perfect strips in 1/2", 1/4" and 1/8" widths. I use the strips for just a line inside a card or to make full backgrounds or where ever a strip is needed.
Worth every penny!
Many companies make strip dies. These were just in the widths that I wanted, and they are long enough to use on slimline cards as well.

I just watched a video where strip dies were used to create backgrounds. I checked the company they were featuring and I could not bring myself to spend that much money. So I did a quick search and the Pink Fresh Studio ones showed up at a price I could justify. Thank you for your recommendation.
This thread made me take another look at my dies and pull out some old favorites. My most used stand-alone die is a long-retired Big die called Top Note. I use it often on Christmas cards to get a large greeting and a small holiday image on the front.

I have been thinking about this, I have many dies that were intended as companions to stamp sets yet stand alone beautifully. I do not always buy the stamps LOL!
My faves are retired but, of those currently available from SU, I would say the Scalloped Contours - and when last I looked the Slim Card (edge & background) dies were still on the Clearance Rack.

Another vote for Wonky Stitched Rectangles, but my set is from Gina Marie. I love her dies. I also love my Tutti Designs Cross Stitch Nesting Rectangles.

I bought these to make my own quilling papers, in addition to a bunch of other uses as identified..
I have too many dies to be able to pick one all-time favourite, but this one has to be right up there for classic simplicity and versatility, and I'd been on the look out for something like it for quite a while https://www.memoryboxco.com/EF1022-C...ut_p_3869.html

I really really wish I had that die! I have used it more than once in my Christmas cards as well, but it's always been borrowed. I actually think that I didn't even own a die cutting machine before that wonderful die was discontinued.

Spellbinders Labels 8 is the same shape. You may be able to find that and be able to make similar cards that you can make with Top Note.

Since this die retired many years ago, you might try E*Bay.
My various circle dies get a great workout at my house. Like Polly, leaves are some of my go to dies as well.

Thinking of a 'favorite'.....IMPOSSIBLE! I find I use at least one die on every card. Spellbinders Labels, Stitched rectangles, squares, circles, Cover dies with multiple flowers. WAY too many to choose one (or 2 or 3,4,5,6)
O.k., this past week, I have been using my Cottage Cutz Nested Stictched Eyelet Square dies and Cottage Cutz Nested Stitched Doily set a lot. I bought these and some of the basic shaped ones when they had an awesome sale lat winter, and I love them! They are the perfect size for cutting out images for cards.
